  1. HI; Problem is I'm moving back to Canada in about 10 days. The Loyale Wagon I have "Pockets" is in great shape but the motor sounds like a Combine or a Stearman bilpane. The motor only has 135,000 miles on it, way less than my last one an 86 4wd wagon got to 288,000 before the floor fell out, well actually the subframe. The extra 2-25 HP would make a huge difference but maybe the hi-flow cat, higher flow pipe and a K&N and possibly a biy of porting will give me another 10-20 hp. That would be enough. I'm going to get a Legacy 2nd generation wagon probably in the next two years. What about cams, whats available for good low end power? I shift at around 3200-3500 rpm normally. Open to ideas???!!! BTW, why won't the Turbo drop in "as is" after all it was offered in the same car? I love simple answers, don't you love simple answers?! Now where did they go! ;-) Gareth
  2. Hi: Well I guess that means no mod s for the current engine beyond; hi-flow cat, better muffler and K&N filter in the airbox. I'll just buy one of those low-mile Japanese market imports (w/turbo) and have it installed. Cheers, Gareth
  3. Hey Soobers; Does anyone nkow what the difference are between the Turbo 1.8 that was put in the Loyale and the normally apirated one? Other than the Turbo being fitted I mean. If I work on my present engine then add the turbo to it, will that be different tha a factory Tubo 1.8? Thanks Gareth
  4. Nope didn't see the header. I have to put I believe some fluid in the gearbox tomorrow morning. I think that's partly responsible for some of my noises. What do you recommend? Cheers, Gareth
  5. Paul; you don't mean Bridgeport, NY do you? Please say you mean "CT"!? I'll call you tonight. Cheers, Gareth
  6. Hey Boarders and especially Paul if you're around. I have some things going on with my 93 Loyale 5spd/4WD wagon. You know whirring, whining.......... I'd like to meet up with an experienced Soob person in this area somewhere and have them test frive the car and give me some feedback. I'm in Thornwwod north of NYC or at least will be for a bit longer,. Hope someone can help. Thanks, Gareth
  7. Hi Kevin: What other mods had you done to the car before that? With a free-er breathing cat and reduced back pressure there should have been more power BUT only if the exhaust-muffler and the intake-improved air filter allowed more air passage themselves. Cheers, Gareth
  8. Hey Kevin: I followed your link. Looked good. Are these a higher flow unit than the stock piece? Cheers, Gareth
  9. Hi: Time for a little more power from my 93 Loyale wagon. Is anyone using an aftermarket hi-flow catalytic convertor. Not a gutted one but a working hi-flow model. If so what was the effect on power delivery and fuel economy. I figure to initially replace the Cat, larger bore muffler/exhaust, K&N in the air box that should move more air through. Maybe go up a wheel size also. Cheers, Gareth
  10. Hey All: Is anyone out there near Toronto? I'm moving back soon and wanted to be able to get together. Cheers, Gareth
  11. Hey: Brand new clutch, however there is a bit of a whine in 1st gear as I accelerate but my last one an 86 did the same, just a low 1st gear. Same sound you get when backing at speed in most std tranny cars. Cheers, Gareth
  12. Hey: I'm liking the bearing idea more and more. I'm having the front right CV replaced when I get back to Toronto in a couple of weeks. I'll get the front bearings done then. I did the hill thing and with a steady speed and the car out of gear prm's down to -500 the nose was still there that has to mean airflow (ie; wind noise on something-windshield weatherstripping) OR running gear since the engine is essentially removed from trhe equation. Thanks for your input. Know of any "members up in Toronto!? Maybe Buffalo? Cheers, Gareth
  13. Hey Erik: Any idea what kind of glue? Should I get new weather-stripping? Gareth
  14. Hi: The Wagon I have is in really good shape body wise and since I'm going back to Canada soon (Toronto) where raod salt is worshipped I won't find a comparable Soob wagon in it's age group. I talked to my mechanic he says he'll do it in a full day so at worst labour will be 4-500.00. As to the engine well probably one of those nice low mileage units from Japan. The cost is negligable. I had a water pump & Intake manifold gasket done in NJ, then a little later timing belts and an idler wheel total cam to over $1000 USD. I could have had a less than 40000 mile engine IN my car in Toronto for less. Thats 90,000 less miles. So next major anything that goes, the motor gets swapped. Or I hang on and get a 94 Legacy sedan. We'll see. This is a neet car. I'd like to keep it for several years. Cheers, Gareth
  15. Hi Erik: The CV is Clunnking alright but I don't detect a whine. The bearing theory I like until I can get a better one. Cheers, Gareth
  16. Hey Erik: I have a really acute sense of smell. For example when someone in the neighbourhood is gassing up a lawnmower I can usually smell the gas before I hear the mower or leaf blower! My experience is that if you can hear a bearing squeeling you can smell the grease or whats left of it burning. I've never done any major work on cars but I was a motorcycle mechanic in the 80's before I realized I'd make more money as a computer Lan Analyst. That's been my experience. Also If it were a bearing I'd expect a higher pitch "whistle". Makes some sense though, maybe there's a Soob board member nearby I can drive over to and they can lookee. Cheers, Gareth
  17. Hey Erik: Thanks for the onput. You think it's just not audible at lower speeds. usually when a bearing is packing up you can smell it can't you. Good thought, have to consider Cheers, Gareth
  18. Hey People: Just curious. Has anybody put the Turbo EZ-82 into a Loyale. If so what was the difference real-world in terms of power and fuel-economy? What was involved? Any special complexities? Thanks, Gareth
  19. Hey Folks: Ihave a 5spd 93 Loyale with 135,000 miles on it. It's making a whineing soud starting at just below 50 mph. If I push in the clutch going downhill to maintain 50+ while I listen it continues. Doesn't do it at idle and it makes the same noise whether I'm in 4th or 5th gear. I don't think it could be the engine. The CV on the Fr-Right is almost gone. Also the weather-stripping on the lower part of the windshield is coming loose. mAybe airspeed vibrating that at speed? I really don't know. The water pump has been replaced in the last couple of months and so have the timing belts. Finally a month or so ago I engaged the 4WD to climb my brothers driveway when it was really wet and the power seemed to just be gone compared to 2WD. Any thoughts on these things would be a real help... Cheers, Gareth Temporarily Thornwood NY.
  20. Hey People: Does anybody know if the old trick used on the carbed GL's; Using the 2WD Distributor cap (different advance curve?) and using a 170deg Thermostat will provide the same kind of improvements on a FI 93 Loyale? Also; are there any club members in Toronto? If so I'm moving back from Jersey and would like to hook up. Cheers, Gareth
  21. Hey Glen: Are you thinking a ring or valve went? There was no accompanying noise. If the ring was wearing out there would have been a slow loss of compression not just bang no power?
  22. Hi Soober's: My Loyale (5spd/4WD) died yesterday. I started it up and put in gear let out the clutch and it was like it was in 3 or 4th gear! The clutch seemed to grab ok, so I'm fairly certain the clutch is OK. It was replaced in the last 6 months. It felt like it was running on two cylinders. I limped it to my garage about 2 miles and left it there for my mechanic. It would crank fine after I shut it off. There is no oil or coolant leaks underneath. I'm thinking timing belt on one side went. When I've started it recently there has been a significant whirring sound under the hood for several secs then it settles down. Belt slippping. The water pump was replaced about a month ago. The bearing let go skewing the fan a bit sideways. Tiny bit of shroud/fan contact, same whirring sound then. I'll get it looked at tomorrow, but I'd like to get an idea tonight to help me relax. I have to drive back to Toronto from central Jersey in two weeks and I am pretty broke. If it's a belt It'll be around $250-300. and I guess I should have two new ones put in? When they did the water pump the must have removed the T-Belts. I wonder if they didn't reinstall correctly? Any help would be great. Cheers, Gareth
  23. Hi: Actually back in the mid-80's I was a motorcycle mechanic, but I have nowhere to work on it and no tools here. Actually the mechanic I bought it from will probably fix it for me since I bought it from him only 2 weeks ago. -Gareth
  24. Not absolutely sure, but it seemed to be bubbling from the gasket. The hoses aren't that old. I won't be certain till I get it into the shop. One of my shops mechanics had a quick peek and he thought it was the intake manifold gasket. The guy I bought it from is their senior mechanic and he'll be back in a couple of days and have a look. I'd love it if it was a hose but It does kinda look like the gasket at the far left edge of the intake manifold (assuming you're facing the engine from in front of the car) Anyway we'll see. -Gareth
  25. Hi: Forgot to ask you, there is a bit of coolant leaking around that intake manifold gasket. Does that make sense? Air leak I can understand, fuel leak, but a bit of coolant? Just curious? Gareth
