  1. Hi: There's an audible click or light clunk when I put my car into reverse to back out of the car port. The side wall of the carport amplyfies the sound I'm certain. Should the gearbox fluid level be checked in the morning beore starting? I went to pick up stuff at the hardware store and checked it when it came out, it read ok. Last night it read low. It was sitting on a slight uphill but nothing major. The clutch is also grabby causing some engine shaking when I have to feather the clutch, usually because a guy in front of me is indecisive in a left turn at an intersection. Any ideas? -Gareth
  2. Found it, and thanks. It was right on a shade under low explaining the clunking noise and the slightly difficult engagement of reverse and first! -G
  3. Hey fella's: My gearbox on my `94 Legacy 5 spd, is a bit clunky. I was gonna check the gearbox fluid level. On my old 5spd Loyale if you removed the spare wheel behind/over the engine there was a dipstick that I could check that with. Unfortunately I have no Haynes manual for my Legacy and don't know where to look!? Can anyone help? Thanks, -Gareth
  4. Hey Guys: I was getting an intermmitent engine check light on my `94Legacy Alpine Sport. It seems to have gone a way after a couple 1000 miles as it had been sitting in the cold for 4 months, however I still want to know what code(s) it threw. Problem is I can't find the under dash LED as it was on my `93 Loyale? Anyone know where I can look. I'm trying to find a Haynes Manual locally but I'd like to check this out tomorrow if possible. Can anyone help? BTW: what the last year you can get the 2.2 liter? Thanks, Gareth
  5. Hey: what are the tire make and model and what rims are they mounted on? Thanks, Romcat
  6. Hey all: I was thinking of converting to a 15" wheel set on my Legacy "Alpine Sport" when the tires wear out. I'd like to go to a bigger wheel/tire combo to improve highway mileage. I do not want to go with say 15" wheels and lower profile tires. What I'm asking is, is there room for a 15" wheel/60 or 70 series combo in the wheel arches? Thanks, Romcat
  7. Hey Guys; Just bought a real nice tidy `94 Legacy "Alpine Sport" wagon. Does anyone know if I can install a "GT" wagon spoiler from the same year? Also is there a window rain "visor" kit available for this car? Thanks, Romcat
  8. Hi guys: Does anyone know what would be normal compression on a `94 2.2 legacy motor. I had a friend check a possible buy for me and he got 175-182 PSI for the 4 cylinders. The car has been beautifully taken care of so it may reflect normal for it. I just can't find the spec online! Cheers, Romcat
  9. Hi Soobers: I'm looking at a beautiful `94 Legacy Alpine Sport Wagon to buy and I'm having a friend swing by and do a compression test. Does anyone know what spark plug socket he should take? I can't find the info on line. It seems 5/8th is right, can anyone help??? Thanks, Gareth (`93 Loyale AWD)
  10. Nope this took place long before the Forrester came along, Saab had done it the year before, and Soob wanted t make a point. -Gareth
  11. Hey Soobers: Does anyone remember what year Subaru went to I think Talladega and ran a couple of Legacy's for 24 hours at 132mph. can't seem to find it on the web. Anyone remember this? Do you have a link? Cheers, Gareth
  12. Hi Listie's" Anyone know any reason that a 1.8ltr. `91 MFI engine wouldm't just drop into a `93 engine bay? Is the FI system the same? When was the Loyale SPFI and when MPFI? Thanks all, Gareth
  13. Hey Listers: With the next set of repairs to be completed Tuesday, ex man gasket replaced, new O2 sensor EGR serviced... We'll see how it runs then. I'm thinking about the suapension. It's rather stiff in my 93 Loyale 4WD wagon so I thought maybe to replace the current shock/spring sets with stronger shocks and softer springs. That should improve the ride. Anyway I though I'd canvas the group for ideas??? Cheers, Gareth
  14. Hey: A code 35 from the ECM. Cheers, Gareth
  15. Hey Listers" Hey what are people paying for MAF Sensors out there. How about O2 sensors. Lastly I probably need to replace the Gas Vapor Cannister. Any place this can be gotten except Subaru? Thanks, Gareth
  16. Hey guys: I'm thinking the engineers at Subaru have a reason for this sensor. One thing it does apparently is help keep the Cat converter healthy so you pass emissions tests. The FI can compensate apparently but it isn't supposed to, it means it's compromising something. Anyway, It's easy enough to replace and honestly if all it does is make my car run cleaner thats fine. Cheers, Gareth
  17. Hi Listers Well I checked the codes on my Soob Wagon (93-5-spd-4WD) and the surveys says, 34! So EGR. What are the likely driving affects. Mine is down on power and fuel economy. No idea when the last O2 sensor was put in so I'll probably change that. My old mechanic says it had flashed MAF of O2 before I bought it. Will the ECM show consecutive codes? Back to the EGR valve, what are the effects? Thanks, Gareth
  18. Hi There: It is the push button 4WD. The light on the console shows it not being on so I'm going to assume its correct!? The check engine light was on when I bought it months ago and my mechanic said it was either the Mass Flow or O2 sensor both of which will impact on the fuel/air mixture. I think once that's done and I see if rreplacing the exhaust with a 2" output pipe and a K&N we'll see where we are. I think the plugs/cap... etc. is a good idea too. My old 86 the timing was off and my mechanic wouldn't listen to me! I could feel it wasn't pulling right but he was like "Hey, I'm the Mechanic, your the computer guy!" Course he forgot I had been a motorcycle mechanic for a few years in the miid-80's. I just added some gear oil. What was on the dipstick (it was reading just below low!) was very clean. I'll likely go with Redline when It comes time to replacce it. The fact is if I get back to near 90 hp that it came with it probably would be fine. It's got some dings but the body is in excellent condition, and the motor only has 131,000 miles on it less than 1/2 of what my 86 had when the frame rotted through. Thanks for your ideas, I think the simple way you've suggested will do fine. Cheers, Gareth
  19. Hi: Sorry I meant compression ratio. The piston change and head decking should have brought it up some? Cheers, Gareth
  20. Hi Listers: Anyone on the board put in or had put in an EJ22 into a Loyale? What was your experience? Thanks, Gareth
  21. Hi there: Unfortunately the car is my basic transportation, so I'm leery of going to a Piston swap. The Torque grind you mentioned what did that cost for the two? What did the compression change come out to from changing the piston's and decking the head? Were you able to still use Regular fuel? Finally what's involved on swapping to an EJ22? Where is the adapter plate available from? Cheers, Gareth
  22. Hey Listers: In moving back from New Jersey to Toronto, my heavily laden car took approx. 4 more hours to get me home than my wifes Camry would. Thats too slow. There were grades that I could barely hold 45mph on! SO; I want to look at increasing power by 10-20 hp. I'm sure the Mass flow sensor and Oxy sensor are not working or faulty- takes a bit to come back to idle even in warm weather. I was thinking of doing the obvious: 1/. Slightly mope ope exhaust 2/. K&N in filter box OK, so the air is moving better. What would people suggest next? 3/. Cams; more interested in low-mid-range 4/. Bore kit; up to 2000 or 2100cc.? When I was a motorcycle mechanics apprentice about a gazillion years ago my boss taught me that to make more power from an IC engine you can; a) make it bigger spin it faster c) make it breath better The tranny is a bit of a problem to. The 1st (5Spd-AWD) is very low and doesn't bridge to 2nd very well. The car plain falls off the cams! The old carbed model had a page for power inprovements; distributor change, electric fan, thermostat change... any idea which of those will work on an FI; 93 1.8??? Thanks all Gareth
  23. Hi Listie's: Saw an ad for The "Pro Choice Performance Module... simply hooks up to your Intake Air Temperature or Coolant Temperature Sensor..." It claims to increase power in the Loyale by 10-20hp! When I was a motorcycle mechanic apprentice in the mid-80's (I'm a LAN Analyst noe) my boss taught me that IC-engines can make more power 3 way: 1/ Make it bigger 2/ Spin it faster 3/ Make it breath more. Well this seems to address the latter by I'm guessing affecting the intake temperature or misinforming it somehow. Anyway, anyone have a clue about these? Thanks, Gareth
  24. Hi Soobers: My tranny fluid (93 5spd Loyale Wagon) is getting low, and I have misplaced my Haynes manual. I went to the auto parts plave and I see plenty of 89/90 weight gearbox oil. That seems a bit heavy. Can someone tell me whats recommended? Thanks, Romcat.
  25. Hi: How is the crossmember different? Because of the way the exhaust hangs. I assume we're talking about the manifold? Can the they be swapped? Is the rest of the exhaust pretty much the same? By wiring, do you mean the igntion etc, computer? Cheers, Gareth
