  1. Hey in NC: If I wasn't under contract for the next 6 weeks I'd take you up on the offer. I wanted to come down that way for a look around anyway. You estimate allowed me to relax a little. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago and this was not a problem then. I have a 93 Loyale 5-spd in pretty good shape with the exception of this and a Fr-R CV needed in the next couple of months. Thanks again, Gareth
  2. Hi Soobers: I have a coolant leak coming from the left side edge of the intake manifold. You can hear it as well as see it. I'd like to get an idea of how much labor would be involved in getting the manifold off and replacing the gasket? I want to make sure my shop is not grossly overcharging me for labor. Thanks for any help, and no I'm not doing it myself because I don't have a place to work on it. Cheers, Gareth
  3. Hey there: Problem is, I have no place to work on this. If it's 3 hours it will cost me around $180.00 for work + the belts... No PS, No timing covers I remember. But it has leaking AC. I've heard horrific numbers for timing belts too, but not for the Subaru! My friends have a 94 Accord and there quote was $500.00 but their engine needs to be pulled part way out apparently! With the Soob, no such problem. JGE
  4. Hey Soobers! Just got the word from my mechanic that when my 86 AWD DR wagon died on the side of the road it's because one of the timing belts blew out. I assume it has two looking at the diagram in my Haynes Manual!? Anyway, what I'd like to know is what kind of time is this likely to take. Trying to get an idea of what I'll pay in labour charges. My old Mechanic In Toronto where I used to live said 2-3 hours. Does that sound right? What about the cost of the belts themselves? In Canada they're about $30.00 canadian or approx. $22-25.00 USD. Any info would be helful. Also The thrust washer bearing is gone or going so time for a clutch kit I guess. Again an idea of cost would be helpfule. The car has new front brakes, new tires and new CV joints up front and a July/06 NJ State inspection sticker, so I'd like to keep it on the road for a while longer. Cheers, JGE
  5. I've seen several listings for Sealed beam headlights for the 86 GL, am I crazy??? http://www.carpartswholesale.com/cpw/subaru~wagon.html Is one of these not workable??? Thanks, Gareth
  6. Hey People: Can anyone tell me if I can fit an inexpensive Sealed Beam unit into my 86 Wagon? It has the Dual not the Quad headlights. These are available for $13-15.00 whereas a Headlight lense is $30.00 Used and like $100.00 New!!! Thanks, Gareth
  7. I saw Sealed beam units available in the 13-14 dollar range. Wouldn't one of these work rather than going OEM?? Cheers, Gareth
  8. Hey there, I need the Drivers side, you got??? Does it have any chips out of it? Mine failed inspection because of a tint, tiny stone chip hole that allows moisture in. What do you figure shipping will cost and when can you send? Thanks, Gareth
  9. Hey there: Does anyone know what the last year was for a Part-time AWD Loyale or GL Wagon? My 86 probably has another year in it, despite a near perfect motor. The body/Sub-frame is going south. I'd like another but I want FWD under normal conditions. Unless of course the difference in mileage is negligable which would be almost impossible. Now I don't near pretty good as in 75% but like in the 90 percentile. I love the ground clearence my little wagon has over the Legacy. Thanks all, Gareth
  10. Hey Soobies: I got my 86 AWD DR Wagon through the New Jersey Safety/Emissions test EXCEPT for: need new Gas cap, 1 Windshield Wiper and I have a chip in the front left Headlight lense allowing moisture in. I need to replace it. Where is the cheapest place to get one in NJ. or by online ordering. Shame the subframe and body are falling apart. I can go for months without needing to add oil. Gotta test the compression one of these days it must be near perfect, it sure isn't burning any oil. Cheers, Gareth
  11. Hey Soobers. Can anyone who's done this, tell me how hard it is to swap a Dual range 5spd tranny (from my 86), into a late 92-94 Loyale AWD 5spd wagon? Thanks, Gareth
  12. OK, So do the later Loyales have the same gound clearence as the 86 Wagon. I'm starting to think I want a DR Tranny with a Turbo engine in a late loyale wagon! Cheers, Gareth
  13. Hey there: What's the Turbo-Lag like on your Turbo Wagon? How's driveability "off" boost? Cheers, Gareth
  14. How does the mileage compare between a Part-time dual-range and a full time? I like being able to run in FWD and switch in the AWD when neccesary and the LOW AWD only when absoluely neccesary. The 88 can be gotten as a fuel injected model can't it? Cheers, Gareth
  15. I can't seem to get a clear answer looking on the web, but what was the last year the dual range, 5-spd Wagon was made. I just saw someone on the list say none of the Loyales were. If so what was the last GL that was? The frame rail rot on my 86 wagon, may be too far gone, so I'm gonna look for a replacement. I've only had this thing a little less than a year and it's had all kinds of problems, BUT it gives me the grins to drive it, and protects me from Predatory NJ State troopers, because I'm never goin fast enough to speed! Cheers, Gareth
  16. Hi Boz!: Can't afford to do that! I'm only working here and there, so money's tight. I'll wait and see if someone else replys about this. The description sounded right though. If this doesn't work then "Smurf" has to go when the Sub-Frame lets go. BTW, what was the last year the Dual Range GL/Loyale was made? Thanks Boz.... Best, Gareth
  17. Hey Soobers; Is anyone on the list using the Frame Rail caps from Mill Supply in Cleveland? I can't tell from the online description if these will work on my 86 dual-range wagon? The description the guy at Mill Supply gave me sounds like they will but knowing someone who's using them would be better. My sub-frame is rotting out where the floor pan starts up into the engine bay. There are two frame channels there that curve around and support the front engine cradle etc. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Gareth
  18. Hey people, Gonna look into the "frame cap" idea and failing that I'll look into Stainless steel and the Vocational School. If anyone near NJ. has a Solid GL Wagon that I could do an engine on, or more accurately get my mechanic to do, (Don't scream at me, I live in an apartment!!!) That might be a better deal than doing the frame work. Cheers, Gareth
  19. Hey Soobie land! My 86' DR/4WD GL Wagon has it turns out serious rot in the subframe rails where the floor curves up into the firewall and front sub-frame. It will need some serious welding. I'm in Central New Jersey and I was hoping someone who has had this work done could recommend someone to fix this. I'd really like to save this car it's my first Subaru and I'm getting a kick out of how different it is. I just had a left CV replace, and the cam belt had jumped a tooth and that's been fixed, still lots to do BUT, until I address the subframe rails issue, I don't want to sink another cent into it. Cheers, G.
  20. Hi All: Is it possible to convert to the Weber 32/36 and use the pollution controls that are on the car? Mine is an 86 GL AWD D/R Wagon w/5spd. I don't want to drop the controls, I'd like it to run as clean as possible within common sense... I know some may be offended by that but, I used to live in Toronto and I watched the air turn brown as the population grew and the number of cars going into the city on weekday mornings increased past 1 million. Now that I live in New Jersey, I bought the Sube to get down dirt roads to hike in places too far from pavement for the average person to like. In other words the car is to help me get to the woods, why would I want to speed its destruction with the tool used to get there. Cheers, Gareth
  21. Hey; Mine is an 86 GL AWD dual range Wagon, EA-82, Carbed. Is it likely to have pollution feedback or not? Cheers, Gareth
  22. Hey Guy's : Is it possible to retain my stock pollution controls after swapping to a weber. I see a lot of guys don't want to, but I'd rather stay with mine if possible. Cheers, Gareth
  23. Was reading about Weber adaptations for the EA-81. I have a 86 Dual Range 4WD Wagon, w/electric mirrors etc, I think it's a "GL". I believe it's a EA-82, so what would be the smart "carbing" to do here. Also how does the airflow through the intake and ports of the Ea-82 compare to the "81"? Thanks, Gareth
  24. Is any one planning a New Jersey get together at any point this next couple of months? I'd like to get some input on my 86 4WD Wagon from someone who is knowlegable of that particular model. Cheers, Gareth
  25. I just started my wifes 93 Camry 5spd. I thought the clutch was broken! It just went right to the floor! It is however hydraulic. Mine can't be right. I tried setting the hill-holder, clutch and brake down together right? and then let go of brake, and so on. This thing obviously needs something ajusted. I'm 5"11" and 200+ lbs and I find it stiff as hell. If it was near worn out and had been adjusted very tight to compensate that would explain it wouldn't it? As to acceleration. In neutral the car revs freely, but in gear below 4500 rpm it's making noise but not really pushing. I need to get a nearby NJ Soob guy to try it and clue me in as I have no Soob experience to compare this to! Cheers, Romcat
