  1. This car is pretty safe, their crusher is busted and the yard opperator is holding the car for me. I will be in there Mon. sealing the deal and getting the car out, hope I can do it in one day. I will also be helping out Steve by transporting it down to him, (looks like Thursday Steve) in an effort to secure the car as soon as possible. I would like to apologize if I have stepped on any toes with this effort, my intentions were to provide assistance and not control this transaction, and I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. Personally I am pleased with the outcome so far . Hondasucks; Wife and I bought property here at Lake Almanor about 9 years ago when Real Estate was in the toilet, we probably couldn't afford to buy here now. It's beautiful up here, and feel very fortunate to have been able to retire here. The big forest fire in this area started about 20 mile east of us, and moved east, away from us, burning over 65,000 acres of prime forest, fortunatly few stucture were in its path. It was 100% contained on Saturday. When you live in the forest, wildfire is a serious threat.
  2. Contacted the yard again today, the car will go for $250. The tow was an abandoned car and has no key, and will have to be a salvage title. Sounds like we may be able to work out a weekend extraction. Darrell
  3. No, they gave me a bill of sale and a transfer and reassignment form Filled out for the car. I understand that a salvage vehicle must pass safety inspections (lights, brakes, etc.) for road worthiness and smog and then you apply with these and a the bill of sale, and the DMV form above for a new title. It will be a salvage title, which may affect it's value as a collector car, but probably not much for this car. I am working on an '80 Toyota pickup that my grandson totaled and I baught back the salvage for $59 from the insurance co., it will require the same. My grandson was paid off and I get the pickup for cheap. Not counting my time of course. Darrell
  4. Well it looks like Kostamojen is "the man" on this car. He is the first to come up with a solid commitment to buy. I didn't get a call back from the junkyard today, so I'm not sure about how the paper work will go. Will call again in the morning and post any new info. I did buy a rolled brat (whole car) from them and will have to get a salvage title for it if I can get it repaired.
  5. I will be glad to help dig this car out of the yard. They are basically a salvage yard for a towing co. and don't do any dismantleing, just let folks go in and get part like a pnp yard and crush. This one is so rare nothing has been taken. The interior is very rough and the front bumper needs repair or replaced, the pass. side door handle is broken, and the outside vent covers behind the rear windows are missing. I have an extra bedroom if you need to stay over. I will be off line this week end, 50th class reunion:banana: . Mike; the car is safe for now, their crusher is down and they are short of help. I will contact the yard and check on the particulars of getting it and post later today.
  6. While looking for other parts I found this '70 Subaru at a junk yard in Susanville CA. Go here for picts: http://picasaweb.google.com/dpdarnell/JYFF1SubaruCoupe02 It looks to be pretty complete and without much damage and a high desert car with little rust. Wife says I can't have it, too many toys in the yard now. If interested PM me.
  7. If anyone is interested: There are two '87 RX's at the Sparks NV Pick-N-Pull. A black one that is automatic I'm pretty sure, just took a quick look, and a White 5 speed. Dual range trans and locking Difs. were still on them when I was there last week. Harvested a few things but didn't have time for the big stuff. This Fri and Sat are 1/2 price days (closed on Sun. in NV) and I was going back but can't make it now. My money is going for something VERY nice. Sorry I won't be able to get anything for any of you either, It's a two hour drive for me and I just don't have time right now.:-\ Darrell
  8. I just went through a similar situation with an '88 RX that had been sitting with the head off. Rust will develope quite fast in humid conditions (Calif. this winter). You may have missed the affected area when you oiled the cylinder wall, or your rag may have been moist. You will have to use an abrasive of some type, while using an approach what will contain the abrasive particles as much as posible. If you have not turned the engine yet, don't until you git rid of the rust, it is very abrasive and will scrath your rings. I used an engine stand and turned the cylinder downward, sprayed the rust with WD40 to lubricate and used emery cloth (medium/fine) to remove the rust by hand. I then used a clean cloth saturate with sovent to clean the area, turning the cloth until it came out clean. Work as close to the top of the piston as you can. Spray rainse and wipe the entire exsposed cylinder several times with WD40. I wouldn't use carb. cleaner here, it will wash the cylinder of all oil and invite more rust. If you have clearance, move the piston to the bottom of the cylinder and check to see if its top was covering any more rust and Repeat removal if any. The rust shouldn't be to deep for the time you left it, and this should work for you. MMO the cylinder good and again before assymbly, and change break-in oil early in case a little bit of grit got missed. MMO is Marvel Mystery Oil, great for assymbly and break-in, red can with black and white lettering. Can be found in most specialty oil sections.
  9. I bought a complete 82 FSM on e-bay about two months ago for 14.95 plus actual shipping, and the guy shipped it media rate. I still can't believe someone on the board didn't beat me out on that one. I also bought two sections of the 86 FSM for 9.95 only this guy hit me for 15.00 shipping. E-bay is your best bet, in the mean time the guys on this board can help you with page copies. Send me a PM with the info you need and I will try to help. Sorry, not going to copy the complete book.
  10. Don't know about your Legacy, but my Forester has a small black button at the very back edge of the undernieth dash plastic, left of the stearing column. This button is used to recode your remote entry system as well reset it. Your owners manuel should give directions. My button was actually haging near where it was supposed to be mounted, left there at manufacture or the nut worked off. You can find relacement remotes on ebay and recode them to yours system if you need be. Darrell
  11. My wifes '99 forester (5 speed man) has 103K and we have had to do one recall on an air sensor and regular maint. I find the back seat a little uncomforable on long trips but other creature comforts are fine. I am right now doing brakes and timing belt replacements, and we are starting to get some wheel bearing noise and I will need to address that issue soon. Other than these things and the clutch shutter that we have accepted and lived with, it is pretty much trouble free. We live in the eastern Seirra Mt. of No. Calif. at 5000 Ft elev. "SNOW". Lots of Subarus here, and some Eliments. Darrell
  12. My '82 brat came with the star emblem missing from the grill. When I found a "third eye" (center light) at pick 'n pull I took the works, grill, light, bracket, screws and wiring to the first connector. I also found an empty connector on my brat in the same place I disconnected from the doner car. It plugged right in. I also have ac, and have not tried it yet.
  13. Rooskie Thanks for the post I'll check and keep an eye on my wifes 99 Forrester. btw I have been checking jy's for a right side head linght assembly($189 at Subaru). Any chance that you'd have a lead on the donner for your dads car. If you have the time check it out and reply or send me a PM. Would really appreciate it. thanks!! Darrell
  14. Pack up your sunglasses and sun lotion and get ready for the wide open spaces. You will find miles and miles of BLM raods and trails to explore. It gets hot in the summer and sometime chilly in the winter. The summer heat is what the locals call "dry heat" little or no humidity. I spend the winter about 200 miles south in s/w AZ. and the summer in northern CA, Lake Almanor. I like the winters down here, but you can have the Rattle snakes and 115 degree summers. Darrell
