the ea 82 5spd 2wd trans is not the same
here are the gear ratios to compair
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th final
EA 81 5spd 3.307 1.950 1.266 .885 .725 3.70
EA 82 5spd 3.636 1.950 1.344 .971 .783 3.90
before changed the trans i was getting 27 city 34 highway after 31 city 37-41 highway cruising at 60-70mph i like the gear ratio alot better you can get up to highway speeds faster and 1st gear isn't nearly as low so, its not the just get you moving gear that it was with the 5spd fulltime 4wd d/r trans that was in it
-
nice car i had one just like it in high school
-
its not a rx but its a rs turbo mildly modded with high comp carb pistons bigger valves, shaved heads, delta cams, intercooled and 9psi boost and it will peg the speedo and keep on going the fastest i've had is about 5600rpm in 5th (I think that is about 140mph) that with a 2wd 5spd ea81 trans i put in it to get better gas milage on the interstate
the gear ratio of this trans is .725 in 5th and a final drive of 3.70
I've had my 80 1800 gl auto sedan's speedo pegged with the tach @ redline going down hill

under that cover is where the factory fog light switch would of ben
the one nearest to the vent is where the rear gate power lock switch is on the 85s and 86s

86 gl wagon 5spd dr 564k orginal bottom end
88 rs 5spd awd turbo 127k on body 7k on ej22t
80 1800 gl auto sedan 70k all orginal
-
why not just drop in a ej 20 its almost the same weight as an ea81 so, it handles as well as it ever did and will last forever but, I guess you could put a crappy old v8 in it that weights 3 times as much as the ej20 has 4 times the parts to ware out and if you baby it you mite get 100k out of it before a rebuilt
or maybe your just afraid of wiring and ecu's

I don't know whats wrong with your car but i would like to know

also mine is silver with 91,000k on it and was a one owner til last july when I saved it the 70 year old woman was going to let her grandson take it to the crusher because it had set in her yard since 95 because the dealer didn't know what was wrong with it or so, I was told. I gave her $50 for it pulled it 2 miles to my dads farm and once it was there it took me hour or so, to get it running (replaced computer, coil, disty) since then I've had to place the clutch so while had the motor out it got resealed the heads shaved bigger valves and delta cams.

my 3 door had rs badging and its a 88 5spd 2wd spfi with ground effects and spoiler but hear is the really odd part its got a DL head light setup

No thats the ea81 5spd 2wd tranny and only hatches and wagons got it so, they are getting to be rare but I happen to have one lying around.
-
your lucky if you can run 87 in you rigs all of my cars ping on 87 only one stock though the other two aren't (decked heads delta cams) all of them get 93

I used gl-5 80w 90 valveline and lucas It just made it a little quiter but its still roaring it 4th and 5th it is the trans not a wheel bearing or a tire it even does it with the wheels in off the gound and not under load of any kind so, whats next will the ea81 tranny go in without too much troble (clutch disk splines the same?) if it will its going in if not i'll be riding the lifted wagon which has almost 600,000 miles on it which wouldn't normally bother me i love my but being 400 miles from home and my tools worries me it likes to brake stuff but that could because everytime I drive it I'm going wheeling
-
my 3door has just started making a nasty winening noise in 4th and 5th gear the car only has 125,000 on it and i know this is not normal for a soob (being that i've owned 11 in my time) so any quick fixes to hold me over til spring break (in collage 400 miles form my other roos i don't want to drive back home to get the wagon right now ) I know it not the clutch its new and just changed the tranny's oil too and its full.
Now here is my next ? has anybody on the board put ea81 2wd 5spd trans in a ea82 car thats 5spd 2wd I'm asking because i have one and think it would get better gas milage with that trans here are the final drive and 5th gear ratio's
EA82 2wd 5spd
final: 3.90 5th: .780 RPM @ 70mph: 3159
EA81 2wd 5spd
final: 3.70 5th: .725 RPM @ 70mph: 2786
