  1. My friend has a weird brake light problem with his 95 outback. When it is cold at night and when he starts his car first thing in the morining, the brake light stays on even after releasing the parking brake. After driving a couple of mile and the car warms up, the light goes away. He checked the brake fluid and everything looks good. One cold morning, he started the car and had the light come on, so he decided to work from home. At about noon, he started the car again and the light was gone. It seems that as soon as the car gets some sunlight, the light will not come on. Any suggestions? Thanx Peter
  2. This weekend I hooked up a guage to my ac because I really want the car to be cooled. When the compressor is not engaged, I get a reading of undr 20psi. When the compressor is engaged, I get 45psi, which is normal according to the gauges. I didn't add any refrigerant, because I wasn't sure if I needed. The compressor was cycling on and off every 30 seconds or so. The belt had about 1/2 inch of play - is this okay? I'm still looking for answers and hoping it's not a costly one. Any other suggestions? Thanx, Pete
  3. Thanx for the info Legacy. i actually meant to say refridgerant and not coolant.
  4. Since we had a rash of warm weather, I just got a chance to check out the AC in my 95 Legacy. It seems that when I have the AC on at the coldest setting, the AC will come on and off and is not constantly on. I never had this problem with any other car, so unless this is a feature on the Legacy, I may have a problem. Can anyone shed some light on this? When the AC kicks in, it is very cool, so I don't think that it is a coolant issue. Thanx, Peter
  5. I have a 95 Legacy that I bought pre-owned. It had 107k on it when I got it. It may be time for a timing belt change, but it also may have been done already. How can I tell if it needs one? If a mechanic has to take everything apart, then they might as well do it, but if it was recently done, I wouldn't want to do it again so soon. Thanx, Peter
  6. Well I called my dealer, which is Salerno Subaru and got quoted: Of what I remember - didn't write it down: $350 - labor $160 - rotors $75 - pads $240 -drums $190 - shoes $70 - cylinders OUCH!!! I'm assuming that they wouldn't charge me extra to bleed the system. I'm hoping that the drums/rotors aren't really that bad and won't need to be replaced.
  7. I just went to Midas to get an estimate on my brakes and they quted me $1200 for front pads and rotors and rear shoes/drums/cylinders. Plus an additional $800 for the front CV joints on my 95 Legacy wagon. This seems really steep, but I need to check with your guys - I don't know how to do it myself, so just getting parts isn't an option. Anyone know any good Soobie mechanics in the Hardyston area of NJ? Thanx, Peter
  8. After removing the torx screw, I found that that the plastic that was around the joint had cracked - the metal plate was intact. I just glued the plastic piece back together and reassembled and now everything is tight again. Thanx for all your help, Peter
  9. Thanx for all the info. I'll try to take the rearview apart when I get home to look at it.
  10. The rear view mirror in my 95 Legacy is very loose and whenver I use the glare lever at night, the entire mirror will move. Is there an easy way to tighten the mirror at the joint somehow? Thanx, Peter
  11. I have a Legacy L, so I will look for it. Great - another bulb to replace - maybe!
  12. How can I tell if my Legacy has ABS. Should there be any type of indicator on the dash? It has AWD and was listed in the carfax as having ABS. Thanx, Peter
  13. How can I tell if the car is in AWD while driving, other than putting in the fuse? I know that the AWD is automatic in Subaru's, so is it safe to assume that from the time my foot releases the brake, all the wheels are in "drive"? Will AWD it feel any different than FWD in terms of handling? Time to find a fuse, Peter
  14. It's an automatic. I don't know how long these tires have been on the car since it was sold to me by a dealer (Subaru dealership, no less). I will have it checked out though. Thanx, Peter
  15. That's what came with the car when I bought it. I never bought a used car before, so I guess that's something to check in the future. I didn't find out about this board until after my purchase. I'll change the tires and have the car checked out. Thanx again, Peter
  16. I checked my tires today and the fronts are different from the rears. The fronts are 205-70R14 while the backs are 185-70R14. I know the first number is the tire width, so is this okay since the second and the wheel size are the same? Should I change them back to the same size (185) or can I change them to all 205? Thanx, Peter
  17. Does the Haynes repair manual cover all the information that would be in the 1995 Legacy owners manual from Subaru? I didn't get the owners manual and I would like to get one - either from Subaru or a third party. Thanx, Peter
  18. This morning was really cold, and after starting my 95 Legacy, the CEL came on. For a few seconds, the car idled at about 2200 and then dropped to 1000 and went back to 2200. It did this twice and then stabilized at 1K and seemed okay. I drove the car for a few blocks and everything seemed fine. I then parked and stop/started the car, but the light came back on. I had to go to work, so I drove it as is and it seems okay. Does anyone have any clues on what may be wrong before I bring it to the dealer tomorrow. The car was sold without warranty, but they guarantee the car will pass inspection so they have to fix it (I hope at their cost). Thanx, Peter
  19. Should there be a gear indicator on the dashboard of a 95 AWD Legacy L? I didn't get an owners manual with the car and I don't see it between the gauges so I don't know if either it isn't there or maybe a bulb burned out. btw, this car has an auto tranny. Also, there is a P switch on the steering column. Can someone please tell me what that is for? Thanx, Peter
  20. Thanx to everyone for your help. I will take a look at the two senders and see if cleaning them will help.
  21. Hi all, I previously owned a 86 GL 3 door and I just got a used 95 Legacy L AWD. It's great to come back to come back to Subaru's. Now for my question. I bought this Subaru with 107K miles, which is really nothing for a Subaru. When I fill up the gas tank, the needle on the fuel guage barely reads full. When I had my old Subaru, the fuel gauge read above full, as do most cars. I filled the tank up when it was almost at 1/4 and it only took 7 gallons. Is there a way to fix this, or do I have to base my fillups on mileage? Thanx, Peter
