Brake Issue
lhrocker replied to lhrocker's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I still have to get my rears done - need new shoes and cylinders. If I had the guts to work on brakes, I'd do it myself. At least I can get a battery at Advanced Auto for $45, plus 10 minutes of my time to install. They also said that I had a bulb burned out - 13 dollars to replace. Needless to say, I told them I could do that. -
Brake Issue

Well, I took the car into Midas today and found that the pads on the front were practically non-existent, which caused the grinding sound. Also, the front two tires were practically bald on the inside edge. Funny thing though, the rears were practically new. I had them replace the pads, resurface the rotors and replace the front two. I asked about replacing all 4, but was told that the old tire had just about the same amount of tread as the new ones. I may have them changed at a later date - it came out to almost $600. If I were to get a new battery for the car, what size would I get and how much would it cost? They quoted me $129 plus installation. If I buy a new battery, does it need to be charged, or is it plug and play? Thanx, Pete -
Brake Issue

Yes, the car is an automatic. Funny thing is, I never really noticed this before. The clicking went away when the car was in gear, so that may be normal, but the rubbing sound was something I never noticed before. I have around 30k on the brakes, but I normally get close to 60k on my pads. I guess I'll take it into get looked at, but any further analysis would be helpful. -
This morning when I was warming up my 95 Legacy, with the car in park, I pressed on the brake and heard a little click with the first 10% of travel. When I started to drive a little bit, it sounded like something was lightly scraping and I've never heard this sound before. Needless to say, I used the other car. Does this sound like a brake issue? No dummy lights came on but I figured better safe than sorry. Any ideas? Thanx, Pete

I average about 26mpg in my 95 Legacy. Just changed all plugs, wires, filters and such. In pure city driving (NYC), I've gotten as low as low as 17-18mpg. In pure highway, I can get up to 28mpg. In my normal mixed driving (Jersey Suburb), I'm in the 25-26mpg. I guess I should be happy, but I'm always looking to gain that extra mile or 2 considering I have a 40 mile commute each way to work.

The car started up and purred like a kitten today. There were no issues at all and it ran very well. So, I guess I have to wait for the next rainy day before I can try anything. Is there a way to check to physically check the wires or is spraying water the only way? Also, is it easy to replace the coil pack? How much does the unit run? Thanx, Pete

When I started my 95 Legacy this morning, the engine was kind of sputtering. In idle, the exhaust would be fine for about 10 seconds then sputter, and then be fine again and sputter again. Over the weekend, I completed changing the plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter and pcv. I had no problems from the weekend change up to this morning. It rained last night and was very damp this morning, if that helps any. There was no CEL light, and after a short drive to the post office (2 miles), everything was okay when I restarted the car. I drove to work and the sputtering was gone. I'll have to see if it does the same thing when I'm ready to go home, but does anyone have any idea? Thanx, Pete

I completed my plug change this weekend and everything went pretty smooth. The problem plug was still very tight, but i got it out by moving very slowly, half turn out quarter in, repleated until it was loose. I then put anti-seize on the threads and everything went in great. So, I'm hoping that this will help my mileage a little, since I've been getting 25 highway lately when I used to get 28. Plus this is the first plug change for this car, bought at 107k and now has 160k. Feel pretty good about it and I saved $150 by not taking it the local Firestorm/Midal/etc...

I'm looking to upgrade my tools so I can work on my Legacy properly. Is any one brand better than another? I guess there is Craftsman, Husky, Stanley, etc... Not really looking into Snap-on or MAC due to price. Any recommendations on wheter I should look at a metric set only or a mixed set? Thanx, Pete

Sorry, it's a 95 Legacy 2.2L. Like I said, the wires have all been changed, as well as cylinder 1. But I was having problems with the plug in Cylinder 3 getting tighter as I loosened, so I just retightened and left the rest of them. Should I just use force to get it out? Also, the engine was hot, so maybe that had something to do with it - maybe I should just wait for a weekend before I use the car when it's hot to do the changes?

I was doing a plug and wire change when I hit a snag today. The with the first wire I pulled, the clip that attaches to the plug came off, so I had to pull that off before I could continue. I got the new plug in and the new wire was fine. The next one I did, the wire came off with no problem, but as I tried to take the plug out, it seemed to get tighter as opposed to looser. I turned maybe a full turn and it got real tight, so I tightened it back and tried to loosen it again. The same thing happened, so I just left it an replaced the wire with a new one. Now I was thoroughly spooked and decided just to replace the wires on the drivers side. It may have been okay, but I was now fearful that the remaining 2 plugs would have the same problem? So, now cylinder 1 has a new plug, and the rest are old but all the wires are new. Should I force the plug out? I took the car out for a test drive and didn't encounter any problems. Any thoughts? I'd love to change the rest. Thanx, Pete

Well after being really lazy about it, I'm going to change my plugs and wires this weekend. It hasn't been done since I got the car at 107k and it now has 150k on it. It's a 95 Legacy btw. I have having CEL issues whenever I try to start the car after a rainfall and always assumed O2 sensor, which it may be also, but I don't get any CEL on nice, bright sunny days. I did some research and come up with the following: Car won't start in damp or rainy weather: It's been raining for a while or it's early morning and the dew is on the grass. Maybe you drove through a big puddle and the engine died. Possible causes: Bad distributor cap : Replace distributor cap. Bad spark plug wires : Replace spark plug wires. The inside of the distributor cap is wet: Remove distributor cap and dry with paper towels. Hopefully this will solve my problem. I know I should get the codes read, but like I said, I'm lazy and my work schedule makes it difficult. Oh well - wish me luck!!!

How long should it take to replace the plugs and ignition wires from a 95 Legacy. I got a quote of $170 at the local Firestorm, but I figure plugs and wires shouldn't run me more than $50, so if I can do it myself, I can save a bunch of cash. Also, what are the chances of screwing something up and the car not working after the change, for a first timer? I usually do the air, oil and fuel filter, as well as belts and pcv valves myself, and never screwed that up. Thanx, Pete

My legacy wouldn't start yesterday, so I had it jump started. It also happened a couple of weeks ago, but my wife had the battery on to listen to the radio while the lights were on. I'm going to get one of those jump start units and was wondering if on was better than another. Please let me know if you have or can recommend one. Thanx, Pete
