  1. Has anyone had any luck finding an alternative to the stock cupholders in the 1st Gen Outback Wagon. The stock holders work okay, but they really get in the way of the stereo, climate control, etc. In my old Leone's I'd just jam my daily coffee between the e-brake and the hi-lo lever. That wont work here, unfortunately.
  2. We've had screaming lake effect snows off and on for the past few days here--lots of accidents--50 car pileup near Muskegon on I-196 ("The Lake Effect Freeway"), most of the victims seemed to be giant American SUV's (a cautionary tale!) I took a pic today of the accumulated snow in parking lots next to "Bulldog" (yes, my OBW's new name! It is a BG, and it won't quit, right--BulldoG!) Some giant mountains of it! I forgot how secure I felt driving in this stuff with my old Leone Wagons (all DR 4X4). The OBW is great, but better (stuff isn't falling off at the same rate as my older gen cars!) :-\
  3. I snapped the key off in my hatch (98 OBW) not long ago. The key from the code DIDN'T work, the key the dealership cut from my spare did (of course you don't have a spare, sorry!)
  4. I had somewhere in the vicinity of 225K on my '84 GL Wagon. That was before tha internets, though. I went to have it serviced and the unibody buckled on the lift. That's all folks.
  5. Had similar experience--the cause, HG failure. Heater lost temp, temp gauge spiked. Was on my way to dealership which diagnosed--HG!
  6. I've been in the hospital for some weird illness--just got out (Lots of snow on the ground--a gift from the sub genius? ) I dreamed I found my old MY 82 GLF (which, when I finally gave it away, was mostly in pickle buckets, BTW) in new condition! Scary--cool--sexy! Dreamed I gave it to my wife. Woke up hyperventilating--nurse taking my vitals. My GLF was walnut brown metallic with all the trimmings. My first Subaru. Gotta love car dreams.
  7. If the HG's were done, the only main way it would show up on carfax is if the work were done at a Subaru dealer, which then it gets into my.subaru.com and then carfax pulls data from there. If you go to my.subaru.com and register there with the vin (since you just bought the car you'll have to fax them the bill of sale or title showing transfer to you or some proof of ownership) then you can see the Subaru service history This is true. I bought my fourth Subaru two weeks ago and was not able to determine PRIOR to buying the vehicle from a used car dealership that this vehicle had diagnosed damaged head gaskets. The Carfax for this OBW (1998) did show the previous owners had all service, recall and warranty work performed at the Subaru Dealership and only a driveability check at the last service--no repair. The car was traded in for a new soob. I test - drove it with extreme prejudice--mainly focusing on torque bind and watching the gauges for weirdness. Beautiful car. I was impressed (my experience with soobs is limited to EA82' s for the most part; I never suspected the heads would be shot!) My auto broker did not suspect the car had this defect, and allowed the car to be driven and test-driven before I bought it. I only learned of the problem upon purchase and en route the local Subaru / Porsche / Mars Rover dealership to pick up new keys for the car. It overheated on the way and I drove the Outback into Subaru's garage. I haven't driven it since. "Friendly" Subaru (East) cracked the heads and determined the mated surfaces were warped. Damn. That's when I logged into USMB for the first time in a long time. I found cold, clear reality and some solace for my woes. Fortunately, the car dealer I bought the car from offered to fix the problem. They had the engine (in a box!) sent to Subaru's local machinist. The shop was able to machine the surfaces affected successfully and rebuild the engine with new belts and water pump. I should have it back this week. I'm looking forward to it! The EJ25D seems to be a great engine, on paper. I appreciate the wonky Subaru-engineering of it. But it IS a hothouse flower, for sure!
  8. I always appreciated the "idiot light" feature on my old gen subs--kept me from running down the battery quite often, I'm sure. The manual, at least for the 98 OBW isn't very clear about the procedure for turning the parking lights off or on. :-\
  9. Here is the flickr image of the Diapet Leone I found. It was owned by a former Subaru dealer.
  10. I saw that one, too. Very good condition on it. I bought a die-cast Leone GLF (early eighties) on eBay from a former employee at a Soob dealer. Its a Diapet, I believe. I'll post when I get it.
  11. I found this friction-drive toy Brat. Its probably an ea-71, but I'm not certain. Just missing the roll bar. Working on other pics. I've been building some Alcyone and XT models. See links (pops to flickr set).
  12. Yeah, I'm definitely planning to have another look. I can't buy something I can't use. But it would be great to have another 4wd Wagon, that is, at least, until I can find and afford a decent XT GL10 T with all the trimmings.
  13. Yeah, I don't want to buy another "bucket of Subaru!".
  14. I'm looking at a Leone wagon that made it intact from Florida to Michigan. Body is great, interior, well, it'll work, and the engine seems to only need its carb repaired or adjusted. It is an EA82 with 4WD DR 5 speed. Is $800.00 too much for a car like this? This seems like a good project car with no rust to speak of.
  15. Here's one for sale in NSW, although it has an Impreza Motor http://cgi.ebay.com.au/IMPREZA-POWERED-BRUMBY_W0QQitemZ190013893335QQihZ009QQcategoryZ135963QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  16. Looks like the Sambar TC Professional has either the Selective EL+5MT or the Full-time E-3AT. There's a dealer in Canada (B.C.?) that imports Sambars, right? Edit for link http://japanoid.com/cardata.php?carNo=24
  17. i'm building a couple of Tamiya Alcyone VR's (One is an North American spec. XT Turbo with spoked wheels.) http://xt6.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4278&highlight=tamiya
  18. I have a litre of Cybrid PS Fluid and I don't even own a Subaru:confused:
