  1. Yes but this would leave other symtoms like popping through the carb and tryying to start sounds to me it is only cranking from what he says and if the head gasket is bad enough it could be the cause of little or no compression
  2. only takes three things to make a motor run spark-you verified fuel-you verified compression ???????? do a compression test
  3. not too far back i had a soob come into my shop with no covers and a alt belt snapped then wrapped up in the t belt, the covers take me a total of 10 min to remove and i'm to the belt of course in my time being a mechanic i've probably done around 40-50 t belts on soobs so a part of that time is expierience, i say keep the covers
  4. Man sounds like your facing the same battles i am with my brat, but i rather enjoy what i am doing to the brat, Rust well i'm fixing to cut out the bed and form/cut a piece of sheet metal to replace it, just cut out all the rust under the doors and will be welding in some 4x2 steel tube/fram, just replaced the whole fuel system new gas tank, lines rebuilt cars and fuel pump. On my way home my bumper fell off LOL so had to fix that one at work today, just got all the lights wired up corretly. whole center consol got rippred out from previous owner, and most the body panels are missing 80% of the bolts to hold them on, and i could go on and on but hey when i'm done it will be a pimp a** ride with a 6 inch lift and some 29" mudders so just remember for as bad as it is, it can allways be worse, thats what i allways say just hang in there and you'll get it all rolling
  5. yep had the same problem with my brat but instead of replacing the line i used an A/C flush kit and replaced the flushing fluid for ac systems with carb cleaner.. Works much better then just compressed air because it takes all the particles out of the line unlike compressed air which will just knock them all loose to create future problems
  6. what i have done in the past is drill the center of the bolt out and pound in a torx bit to act as an easy out and try and romove the bolt that way
  7. sounds to me like you didn't plug in the electrical connectiond to the carb???
  8. man just drive to a shop locally and have a mechanic zip it off for you with an impact gun, if you don't want to pay money come to bothell at my shop and i'll get it off for ya
  9. hmm how good are you with a torch??? If you can get a small enough flame on a torch to just get the bit red then tap the oxegen the bit will explode but would be real hard to do on aluminum(in fear of melting the aluminum away). Done it on cast iron before, other then that i would have to try and work the old bit out with a center punch or something like that. Everytime i tried to drill a bit out i broke one of my cobolt bits off in the hole so be carefull and goow luck
  10. well just got all of the fuel lines pump and tank replaced which made this thing run like a CHAMP:) drove it for about 200 miles and seemed to do well, as far as the wheels and rims i will get you all a picture of them soon and will be selling them to whoever wants them once i get the lift and new rims and tires for them
  11. my 85 brat did the same thing i was getting fuel pressure but not enough to keep the float bowl full of fuel found out i was only getting .5 lbs of pressure and should of been around 1-3 lbs, so do like 85Sub4WD said but make sure you get a bit of a stream and not just a little bit comming out
  12. Ok here's what i've done in the past much like a helicoil they make an insert that you can put in there talk to you local parts store or even a machine shop to find out if they have these in your bolt pitch, The procedure usaually is to drill the whole 3 or 4 drill sizes bigger then what you need then use the tap they give you with the kit, thread it in and insert the oversized helicoil, done it on older bugs, soobs, and all kinds of american rigs. Other option is to oversize yout hole and use a bigger bolt for this you will probably have to drill the hole in your intake a little bit bigger and use a stud and a nut to reinstall Good luck
  13. hey clutch i'm in bothell if your close to me i'd be more then happy to help you out
  14. i think doing the heads would be good experience for you so when you do it on a rig you care about you do it well
  15. nah man it was a black brat up by darrington just off wheeling away then all of a sudden he was gone.. as far as the weber on the brat that was the plan unless i decide to stab a FI engine in it but for starters i'll probably see how the carb does I just got back from a 4800 mile road trip so thats why i haven't posted in a while but i did see a soob wheelin away in wyoming off of hightway 20/36 looked like fun made me want to come home and get started on mine, unfortunatly o gotta get the tranny in my blazer first so i can have the room in the garage,
  16. i mean it will increase the combustion heat and just because one type of plug specify's heat range there not exact to the actuall o/e range
  17. i mean it will increase the combustion heat
  18. Well pingin happens when your combustion chamber is getting too hot, and one of the best cooling devices for your combustion chamber is your egr valve, i know you say the egr recirrculates exhaust gas which is hot.. but it is alot cooler then your combustion chamber.. i would suggest rather then diabling your egr, which will cause gasses to not recirculate.. You should get your hands on a vacuum pump and run a line to your egr from your drivers seat, when it starts to ping pump up the egr if it will even hold pressure(if it doesn't replace it), if the pinging goes away your not getting vaccum to your egr under load if it does not and holds pressure you will more then likely have carbon built up in the passage blocking a way to cool your motor... In that case pull intake and get it heat treated or find a shop to do a motovac hope this helps if ya lived closer i'd tell ya to run it by and i'd help ya test it all but your like on the other end of the planet Oh and one more thig platinum plugs burn alot hotter the regular plugs causing more heat in the combustion chamber, and all japanese cars run great on NGK's first and if you can't get them Nippon denso's
  19. well being a mechanic blow by is most caused by bad pcv valve, or rings letting oil go back up the motor. hope it's the first one, a clauged air filter could do it also causing a reverse sucktion and causinf the carb to starve for air, take the air filter out and see if it runs better, if it is the air filter what peter is describing could be your whole problem because that is the next place the carb will try and get air from
  20. ok here it is http://friendsofwarcraft.nuclearfallout.net/brat%20002.jpg extra parts http://friendsofwarcraft.nuclearfallout.net/brat%20006.jpg why i'm gonna make it a wheeler http://friendsofwarcraft.nuclearfallout.net/brat%20004.jpg
  21. if you don't care about the block use heat and a hammer
  22. sweet soob can't wait to get mine off roading
  23. sounds to me that you may have a vacuum leak... What i would do in this case is take my propane torch turn it on.... DO NOT LIGHT IT... and run it around in your engine campartment, like at intake manifold, down the vacuum lines, and even your injector seats and seals... if you find your engine smooths out then you found your leak... What are you failing on your emmisions test... HC, CO, NOX, well thats what test for in most states.. if you post your readings i may be able to help a little bit more
  24. Hello fellow soob owners just wanted to pop in and say hello. I have just purchased my first subaru and it is a 1985 Brat. I have been wheeling for years now and last time i was up i was in my 1970 landcruiser and saw a brat in the mountains of washington and was so impressed that i had to get my own... Will keep you all updated in the future with mods i will be doing and frequent here when i get stummped. The great thing is i saved this poor little fella he was sitting in a field for 10 years before i drove by one day saw it and got it... Unfortunatly the first thing i have to do is take care of some cancer it has, fix the gl windows??? i think it has in it so i can actually roll them all the way up and rebuild the carb(or put a weber on) and replace all the fuel delivery Good thing is i've been a mechanic for 15 years and been fabbibg 4x4's for about 5 years so this should be a fun little project... pics will come when i get a new camera broke my old one
