Ordered an O2 sensor online.
Richard1296 replied to miker1100r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThats what my O2 sensor cross references to. I bought a Denso 234-9018 to replace the incorrectly replaced one on my 2000 OBS (2.2L) The part number 22641AA00A according to the information I found fits 2.2 and 2.5 Try this link http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partlistbymod.php?subcat=Engine+Parts%2C+Sensor+O2&model=Impreza It appears to be superceded by a new number. Send the wrong one you have back and get a Denso 234-9018. It works just fine on my 2000 Impreza Outback Sport Richard

2002 2.5L Loses Power Up Steep Grades
Richard1296 replied to joesauer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDon't just look at the converters, any obstruction in the exhaust system will cause the same symptoms. An exhaust pipe that is partially mashed shut or even a muffler that has failed inside is still a blocked exhaust system. The cats years ago used to be real bad for coming loose inside and rattling, blocking the exhaust. Converters have improved a lot but the possibility still exists. A seriously overheated or a lean engine can also melt the ceramic in converters causing them to block the exhaust. If you have access to a heat/temperature gun. Look for the hottest place in the exhaust system . The whistleing noise could also be a vacuum leak under the hood. And vacuum leaks can seriously lean an engine and make it ping. Of course the lean engine could then make the exhaust so hot it will damage the converter, so the possibility of more than one repair may be needed. But a pinging engine is one that needs prompt attention, or a new engine will be needed. Richard

At Temp Light Blinking
Well since the transmission was changed about 3K miles ago, I'd look for a connector that has come unplugged. At least thats what I would hope for. That or a wire damaged. The code can be retireved to help diagnose the trouble. 16 blinks is only an attention getter so you will look for the problem. Torque Bind is such an ugly term. Richard

Replacing Coolant Temperature Sensor

Replacing Coolant Temperature Sensor
On a 2000 OBS, does the coolant temperature sensor screw into a water jacket or into a blocked hole. The manual I searched up on the internet made no mention of draining the cooling system enough to keep coolant from running out of the hole. Its a 2.2L engine if that matters. And the same question for the Idle Control Valve. I see references to it leaking antifreeze but the manual said nothing about draining to replace it . Richard

Service manuals on CD
Richard1296 replied to Richard1296's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have not been impresssed with Haynes or Chilton manuals. And while the Subaru manuals are no doubt the best I hate to part with $200 to get them. I bought a complete set for my 90 Legacy for $105. I may have to buy OEM but I'm hoping to do a little better than $200. And I have factory service manuals for all my cars except the 2000m OBS. 84 Mustang GT 89 Mustang GT 90 F150 90 Legacy 2000 Hyundai Accent I haven't see factory manuals on CD...or if I did I didn't know it. Oh well ...its only money....you can't take it with you, and you can't stay here with it. Richard

Service manuals on CD
I see lots of service manuals on CD for sale on Ebay. Are they any good ? I'd really like a factory service manual set for my 2000 OBS, but I really don't want to spend $200 to get one. I have considered downloading everything from Subaru online, but they have them broken down so small it would take all weekend to download them all. So I'm back to the original question...are the manuals on CD worth having, and if they are copies of a Haynes or Chilton manual then I don't want them. Opinions please. Richard

Infernal Parking Light Switch
Richard1296 replied to Mountaindave's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA redesign on the switch could make it harder to accidentally turn it on. Perhaps one that you pull out to turn the lights on . But I must say after you have hit it by mistake one time, its a mistake that one should remember. Richard

Best Tranny oil for quicker shifting when cold
Richard1296 replied to Petersubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI like the more agressive shifts when my 4EAT (2000 OBS) is cold. I wish mine shifted that way all the time. Richard

Engine Block Heaters
Anyone here got one, either Subaru (OEM) or aftermarket ? How well does it work, when do you use it ? The Subaru one ( A0910AS000 ) looks real simple, almost too simple. I assume that is the correct one for my 2000 Impreza Outback Sport. Anyone got any complaints or praise on them ? And....what's the part number for one for a 90 Legacy, if I ever get my Legacy back from my son. Richard

How much were you quoted for a OEM muffler for a 90-94 Leg?
Richard1296 replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't mind a muffler that has a little rumble, both my Mustangs have exhaust that can be heard. But I like my Subaru to be QUIET. And a loud Subaru just sounds like a mad VW to me. The used muffler I bought will get welded onto the old pipe and should fit the factory hangers...and it will look and sound OEM. I really like how quiet my 2000 OBS is. Richard

Richard1296 replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhttps://www.1stsubaruparts.com/ About $100 plus shipping (OEM) Local car parts supplier about $95 but not Subaru...looks just like Subaru except the chrome tip is not supplied. Both are the muffler and the pipe up to the muffler. Just bought a good used one from a junkyard for $20...complete from converter (not including converter) to the chrome tip. From a 99 Legacy so all I can probably use on the 90 Legacy is the muffler, but it'll sound better than the $#!+ sounding muffler my son put on it. Then his was free though. Richard

low tone a bit wobbling moaning (like bad tire) sound from front on LL Bean 2001
Richard1296 replied to yarikoptic's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWorn tires can be quite noisey. Once they have a wear pattern from being misaligned and out of balance they may never feel right or sound right. Having had this problem the only cure was new tires. I'n not saying it absolutely is the tires, but if the alignment is right and you eliminate mechanical defects in the car...the only thing left is tires. Richard

Wheel slip in AWD?
Richard1296 replied to NoahDL88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts the same symptoms as my 90 Legacy . A semi local transmission shop quoted me $750 to repair a transfer unit on my 90 Legacy. If I could find a reputable shop to do it for $400 I'd jump at it. Read the word "reputable". I can probably get it done for $400, but the quality of work is unknown. Richard

Changing from dino to synthetics in higher mileage vehicles.
Richard1296 replied to oregonloyale's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy 90 Legacy was swapped to Mobile 1 when I got it about 4 years ago. It had about 170 K on it then. Its got 190K ( It sees winter use mainly) on it now and I add no oil between changes ...though I change at 4-5K. It doesn't leak and it does not use oil. The bottom line is...if it leaks or uses oil now...it'll leak and use oil later. I haven't had my 2000 OBS long enough to change oil in it yet, but it'll get Mobile 1. Richard

Richard1296 replied to yarikoptic's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe gauge on my 2000 OBS runs in the middle all the time. I would think that reading is normal . Richard

Help, please. 90 Leg, no-start... "open" between relay and fuel pump
Richard1296 replied to NorthWet's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXJust for kicks try listening for the fuel pump when you start the car normally to see if you can hear it. Then listen for it when it won't start. I'd replace the fuel filter before replacinng the pump and even replace it if the pump proves to be bad. Richard

Pair of windows won't go down
Richard1296 replied to gcleeton's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm not sure...I don't have a manual for 96. My experience is with my Mustangs. But I would be suspicious of the switches and their grounding at the drivers door. I do have a 90 Subaru service manual. It says first check main switch ( drivers door) and second check sub switches (passenger doors). It also says to check motor and regulator assembly but if it runs in one direction they should be OK. Only other thing would be a broken wire somewhere, but I'd still bet on the drivers door switch and wiring. Richard

Pair of windows won't go down
Richard1296 replied to gcleeton's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts got to be the switches, but the passenger door switches may be wired back to the drivers side. Check all the switches. Usually the switches provide the ground, with power at the motors all the time. Richard

Short-term emergency(like)... 4*E*AT - Transmission *not* dead?...
Richard1296 replied to jmickelct's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think I'd just hang on to the spare transmission and run the original one till it dies. Hopefully it'll give some warning before it quits and you'll have a spare. If you don't keep the spare you are sure to need it and if you keep it you'll never need it....or so goes my luck. Richard

Headlights Are Horrible
Richard1296 replied to kimokalihi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt's not that Subaru's headlights from the 90's are a Subaru problem. I also have a 90 F150 and an 89 Mustang. They use the same bulb as my 90 Legacy uses. And their lights are all about the same. The biggest improvment to older headlights is clear lense's. My 90 Legacy had cloudy lense's and a thorough cleaning with a plastic lense cleaner made by 3M made a major improvment. Cleaning the inside with mild soap and water will help some. I added the Xtravision lamps to the 90 Legacy and they made a small but noticable improvment. You're not going to get older lamp design's to produce the quality and quantity of light of the newer design's. Even the slightest amount of clouding or haze in the plastic lense will seriously affect light output. Richard
