purge solenoid
Richard1296 replied to aartod's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe purge solenoid is under the intake runners on the passenger side mounted to the intake. Its easy to see if you stand on your head. It has a two wire connector the connector is blue if I remember right. Finding a good used solenoid isn't easy as they are a common item to fail. Cut the solenoids wires at the solenoid and replace it with a 100 ohm 1 watt resistor. It will fool the computer and allow the CEL light to be reset. Plug the two hoses that connect to the solenoid. I didn't see and problems when I did this to my 90. I did finally find a good used one. Richard

2000 OBS Fuse Panel
Richard1296 replied to Richard1296's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually I had no problem removing the fuse box. It was suprisingly easy. And the fuse box comes apart to reveal replaceable contacts that just plug onto the board.Replacing them would be easy if I could find them. Local parts stores can't find them, and the same small fuse is used in almost every car made. I thought maybe the removable contacts would be the same for other makes of cars (wrong again). My local (sort of) Subaru dealer could not find the contacts and wanted to sell me a complete fuse box...I didn't ask the price. Looks like the hard part will be finding the contacts. I need to find a junker to get the parts from. A salvage yard would want to sell the whole fuse box and I hate to pay too much when all I want is the contacts. Anyone got a late model Subaru that uses the real small fuses and would sell the fuse box (or contacts) reasonably priced. Richard

2000 OBS Fuse Panel
I have a problem with the fuse box in the dash. Anyone ever remove one of these, and how much trouble is it. Are the contacts the fuses plug into replaceable or at least can I get to them. Richard

Finally got the suby RUMBLE!! new muffler(video clip)
Richard1296 replied to A DOG's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't think one trip through the car wash will be enough. It looks like the weather we had here (Virginia) last week . It took a pocket full of quarters to get all the crud and salt off the Subaru. Richard

What kind of ATF originally came with first gen legacy's?
Richard1296 replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy 90 Legacy's owners manual calls for Dexron II. Dexron II is no longer available and has been replaced by Dexron III and Mercon/Dexron compatible types. I use plain old Mercon/Dexron in my 90 Legacy and the 2000 OBS. If ever I was to repair or replace either transmission I would use a synthetic though. And I'd add a small transmission cooler to supplement the factory cooling. Richard

O2 sensor and Y pipe recontruction
Richard1296 replied to Uberoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere should be a harness that comes onto the right side of the engine from inside the car. It should branch off for the purge solenoid and coolant temp sensor. Near there should be another 4 pin connector for the O2 sensor. If I had the car here I could tell you more. Its been a year since I was under the hood of it. But since I had to replace the O2 sensor and purge solenoid I am pretty sure of the locations of most connectors on that side of the engine. The locations are the same on my 2000 OBS, though the connectors are different. Look on any 2.2 engine for the O2 sensor harness. It will be in the same location on the engine. Richard

O2 sensor and Y pipe recontruction
Richard1296 replied to Uberoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy son has the car right now, no idea when I'll see either of them. It's a square grey four pin connector. The connector on the wiring harness should be a female connector. The connector should be near the right rear, under the edge of the intake. I'm thinking it has BLUE, WHITE, and two BLACK wires. I've also learned not all Subaru's of the same year are the same. Richard

O2 sensor and Y pipe recontruction
Richard1296 replied to Uberoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy 90 Legacy AWD (EJ22/auto) has an O2 sensor. I had to replace it. The connector for it is on the right side of the engine close to the intake manifold. It could easily be overlooked. Richard

Wheel Bearing Grease
Richard1296 replied to Phillip's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMobil 1 Synthetic Grease is great stuff and available almost anywhere. Clean the original grease off with a clean rag, do not use solvents. Do not spin the bearing when it is dry of grease. Richard

New radio install problem
Richard1296 replied to lekmedm's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI wasn't aware the radio fuse was under the hood. On my 2 Subaru's it's in the fuse panel under the dash. Richard

anybody dealt with www.autopart.com
Richard1296 replied to 000utback's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThats the front sensor....and it should be a 4 wires, the same one fits all 2000 OBW and OBS with 2.2 and 2.5 engines. A Denso 234-9018 is what I used. Works fine and fit perfect for me. The rear is 6 wire I think....but I've never had to replace that one. Under $100 shipped as I recall. Richard

Tire Rotation Interval
The retailer where I bought my tires rotates them for free every 5000 miles. Seems a little excessive but its their suggestion and it is free. Of course they also suggest rebalancing at every rotation and "of course" they charge for the balancing. I suppose if I don't let them rotate and rebalance, then if I complain about tire life they will blame it on my maintenance, or lack of. Richard

Anoter Informal Poll: Circa 1995 Subarus...how many miles you got on yours?
Richard1296 replied to Voluptuary5's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX91 Legacy LS (2.2 auto) . I think its time to rebuild the transfer clutch unit, awd just not what it should be. Probably will do it soon. 190,000 miles and otherwise runs as good as new. Wouldn't think twice at putting $1k in it to keep it up. Can't replace it for that money. Richard

Sluggish when cold, Injectors?
Richard1296 replied to andyhessler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would look at the coolant temperature sensor or the oxygen sensor as the two most likely causes. Have you checked it for trouble codes ? Richard

Spark Plug Question (Again)
Whats the OE plug for my 2000 Impreza Outback Sport. And what is a good replacement. The "Zone" lists a lot of Bosch plugs and they do fine in the wife's Hyundai. Seems I remember seeing here (or somewhere) that Subaru's don't like Bosch. I'd like to put in a set that will last the next 50K or so. No Idea whats in the car or how long they been in it. It runs fine but I usually change all the filters, fluids, and plugs when the previous history isn't clear. Generally I keep a car amost forever. And to all HAPPY HOLIDAYS...please make the season a safe one Richard

Ordered an O2 sensor online.
Richard1296 replied to miker1100r's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSince you don't need it right now,you have a spare that you most likely will never need....unless you send it back or sell it. Then you are assured to need it. Or so goes my luck. Richard

Pinout for the SMJ 90-94 legacy?
Richard1296 replied to NoahDL88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMine is a factory service manual for a 1990 Subaru. And it makes reference to a fold out....I don't see one anywhere in book 6. If you have the electrical schematics the pin out of all the connectors appear to be there. No idea why my book liste the foldout but does not have it. My books when purchased were clean and pure as if they had never been touched. Sorry I don't have a copy. Post a link to it if you find it please. Richard

Pinout for the SMJ 90-94 legacy?
Richard1296 replied to NoahDL88's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIs this something that would be in a factory service manual set. I have a complete set for 90...I even have a 90 Legacy. I have no idea of a SMJ, either what or where it is. DAMFINO Richard

Stinky rich cold idle, normal?
Richard1296 replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDoes your CEL work , one that had a dead bulb hid my problem from me...never noticed it didn't light in test mode. My 2000 had a real rich cold idle but did fine when warmed up. Mine was the Oxygen Sensor, but again the bulb was out and was my reason for no CEL . Richard
