  1. Hey guys, I don't wanna be a pain and start a new thread so i will continue this one.... I got under the car tonight.....Shifter bushings are shot and that spring is missing LOL so I am gonna order the parts and fix it myself...I have the threads saved on fixing it so I will be all good. The trans smells like burning tranny fluid and I have figured out that the trans fluid is actually seeping out slowly through various orfices LOL. So I am sure the car will need some big work done... My question is : Is the final drive ratio on this car 4:11? Because if it is, I found a tranny with 40k on it in perfect condition for extremely cheap. I am also doing some body work on it as well...just sanding and fixing small rust spots by the rear fenders and fixing some damage on the front driver side fender....should be fun:headbang:
  2. Nipper, this sounds interesting....what/where is the TO bearing? All this new suby lingo....I thought I knew it all owning a wrx LOL I drove the car to a teaching workshop in the South Bronx today and back without any problems except for the damn whirring noise.....Had it up to 75 on the highway no problem....I mean driving the car you can tell it sat for a while and that some of the bushings are a bit dried up and the rear struts are not in the best shape, but everything works (for now). I am going to have this noise looked at and I am going to replace the trans fluid as well, but if it's something that does not have to be fixed right away, I am going to leave it. One thing I am going to do provided that the car doesnt need thousands worth of work, is when the struts need replacing, I am going to do the outback conversion because I like the lifted/offroad look on these cars, but I couldnt afford an outback. I hope that I can do all this and the trans is okay as this car is my daily driver now and my wrx is my garage queen.
  3. Lovely LOL- one more thing.....this car is starting to worry me...I am thinking it just sat for too long without being driven. I am just gonna drive it and replace parts as I go I guess:-\ You know what pisses me off? This one has 100k on it. I had the oportunity to buy a 96 wagon with 150k on it for the same price that is in perfect working order but the guy stood me up twice when I wanted to see it so I scratched the idea. I jumped all over this one because it was the same price with 50k less miles on the motor, a brand new clutch, and now look where it is getting me....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:mad:
  4. Umm....wait....I was under the impression that when I push in the clutch pedal and the car STOPS making the noise that it is NOT the throwout bearing...Am I mixed up? or is the above post mixed up? BTW I don't think I have torque bind....car turns fine at low speeds and doesn't jerk.
  5. It does happen in tight turns, so maybe I have torque bind....but it's not nearly enough to make the car not drive well. This grinding that I am describing...it's more of a loud whirring sound and it happens whenever I am on the gas.... Also what's wierd is that when I am just sitting in neutral, it makes a whirring sound too, but when I push the clutch in, the whirring sound goes away...I don't know maybe that'd help diagnose the problem...
  6. Nahh doesn't really make it in reverse...maybe a tiny bit but not enough to really notice....Goes into reverse easily too...doesn't really grind, just makes the same sound that my wrx does...typical subaru loudness of going from forward gears to reverse when started cold. I am going to change the fluid within a couple of days....Hopefully it will get better a bit once I do this....if it gets worse I guess I will know that the tranny is f'ed....but you guys have been very reassuring on the prices of everything. I know my shifter bushings are shot right now and there is a lot of play, but until the big issue gets fixed, I need to not worry about the shifter being sloppy.
  7. gary, Thanks for being so patient and walking me through this. I am totally fine with draining the fluid. I have done all this stuff on my WRX so I am not a total noob and I have all the tools and everything. I am only this cautious because sometimes used cars can be like opening up a can of worms. Because the wrx is mine, and I have owned it since mile 3, and have done all the work myself and had qualified performance tuners do the rest, it's a lot easier to have piece of mind when working on it. The legacy is far more nerve racking because I don't know what in fact it needs ya know? You have been more than helpful and more than patient and I greatly appreciate it. It's nice to know that not everyone is as impatient as the a-holes on nasioc. All I need to know is what kind of fluid to get and what tools I am going to need to do this. Once I know this, i will do it and report back afterward with pictures if I have to. thanks again a million times for everything! Dan
  8. Alright well should I just drive it until something breaks? Is the front differential part of the tranny or is it separate? sorry about all these questions, I am just nervous because I have spent more than I thought I was going to already and the car still isn't sounding right.
  9. Ahh I know uncle scotty's VERY well. I use a similar mixture in my baby (modded 04 wrx) i just didnt know that I could use it in my legacy! That's awesome! About the latch - the trunk is in beautiful shape EXCEPT for the latch. There's not even any rust or oxidation anywhere on the tailgate....or anywhere on the car except a small amount right on the rear fender that is getting taken care of tomorrow.
  10. uggh crap still getting the hang of this board....sorry about all the new posts...not trying to be a whore.
  11. Nipper, The car actually downshifts fine, or at least i think it does. It's loud with going from 1-2, 2-3 - sounds like a truck. Cruising in 4th and fifth is mostly fine. Makes a bit of a whirrrrring noise in neutral, but nothing horrible sounding. Hill holder still works (I thought the brakes were frozen at first because the car doesn't roll back but then I did a search) When you say drain the oil, you mean the tranny oil right? LOL I am not really worried because if the tranny does go, I will just get a used one and throw it in...then the damn thing will never die hahaha. On the upside and off topic - I was poking around today and figured out that the car has a brand spanking new radiator with zero bent fins:-) Also cleaned the interior for four hours today and I am going to do some minor bodywork in the front fender tomorrow as well as on the rear quarter panel where there is a tiny bit of rust. Just gonna sand it, prime it, and touch it up really quickly to contain it for good....Full detail with the porter cable with come after body is fixed up. I might enlist the help of one or two of you who live fairly close by and give a small token of my appreciation. PLus if we were to do it at my place we could also play with my wrx (modded).
  12. How much do used manuals in good shape usually run. Entire clutch assembly including flywheel is brand new so I won't be needing one of those. How much does labor on doing one usually cost and can I run this tranny into the ground before I get a new one without screwing anything else on the car up? Also, unrelated but how long does it take to change a timing belt and water pump? These parts are very cheap and I would rather do this myself with some help than use a shop because I have heard they are fairly easy on 2.2's
  13. No way...I wish it were that simple....this is a metallic grinding sound coming from inside the back part of the engine bay. The motor on the car is mint so I know it is something with the tranny or diff...Hopefully just a bearing or something.
  14. In terms of CV work, the replaced the passenger side CV and axle. I know it's not wheel bearings....the noise clearly comes from the tranny so i definitely think you are right about it not being them. The trans is a 5 speed manual with a brand new clutch. It stays in gear, and shifts smooth, BUT it's got that terrible shifter slop due to worn shifter bushings. I do know that the worn shifter will not cause tranny noise though....maybe a bit of buzzing but nothing like whats happening. Yellow short dipstick in the back is the tranny fluid right? If yes, then I checked it and it is not only full, but looks new because of its smell and color. I am just going to keep driving the car until i figure out what's wrong or until something breaks because it drives fine. It's okay to do this right? I guess I cant do the front wheel drive trick sicne the trans is a manual....oh well. Let'ssay it's the front diff/transmission.... How much do they usually charge for a rebuilt tranny installed....not done through Subaru though because I don't want them touching my car.
  15. The sound sounds liike it's come from the frint end somewhere. no noise from the rear...car sounds lke it should in the back. The noise reminds me of what my uncle's 93 stick ford explorer sounded liike...basicallyjust loud and grindy like a truck. car does not make the noise at all in neutral or when off the gas The tires all match in size and tread...has blizzaks on it right now but Iknow what tire noise sounds like. I will try the fwd fuse idea and let you know. The car had new rear brakes, new front axle/cv, and a new wheel stud put in yesterday. 565 bucks worthof stuff and labor so you can see why I am pset right now LOL. It was making the sound before that. Itdoesn't sound like it's comming from one side. It sounds like the whole front end. I cannot feelit in the seat or steering wheel of the car. Luckily the car idles smoother than my wrx, runs on the cool side of the temp gauge, and has sat in traffic without the temp going up so I knwo there are no cooling issues. It seems like the more highway driving I do on this car, the less noise comes from it. I hope this helps you guys diagnose my problem! Thanks a ton - Dan BTW I am so sick of NASIOC and the shmucks that are on that site that I think I am just gonna be on here and clubwrx from now on.
  16. Okay so I have this 95 legacy with 100k on it that is really starting to piss me off and worry me. In first and second gear, the car sounds like a truck...lots of loud noise and a kind of light grinding or scraping sound. Same thing happens when on the gas hard, or going up a hill hard in mostly any gear. Car drives solid as a rock and always stays in gear. It just sounds like something in the tranny is wrong... How do I know if the tranny is shot in this friggin car? Ugh this is starting to turn into a bad dream. -Dan
  17. got the car back and all is well for now.... mechanic said that there is some noise comming from the tranny...is this related to the shifter bushings or is the tranny just making loud noises? He said that changing the tranny fluid might not be a good idea because he said that the can actualy make things mucch worse if there is something already wrong....is this true?
  18. UPDATE :-) Took it in for NYS inspection and this is what they found: Busted CVboot/axle on passenger side Needs rear brake shoes Broken stud on the wheel Needs oil change They are fixing it all today and my new mechanic (who is awesome) told me around 300-350 for everything which is fine by me....I am used to WRX prices so I thought al this stuff would cost me like 800 bucks LOL As for the rear latch and all that, I am gonna wait a little while. It still closes just fine...just is totallly rusted and sticks a lot. As long as it works, I am not gonna bother right now. thanks for all your help to everyone who helped me! - Dan
  19. Someone told me that the car does not roll back in first gear because it actually does have some type of hill holder thing.....Is this true? Bump for a but more commentary on the issues with this car that I have addressed Thanks again guys....it's not easy being a legacy noob.:-\
  20. OH!!! forgot one thing.... When starting in first gear, the car feels almost like the e-brake is pulled up a bit...but it's not.....it's wierd though....the car just doesn't roll back and feels "locked" for a split second....even if on a hill. Once it get's going just a tiny bit though, it's perfect...what is this??? I know they didn't have hill holder on '95 legacies
  21. OKOK thats not as bad as I thought....Figured you were gonna tell me like 500 bucks for them LOL I did check the CV boots...no tears that I could see on any of the fronts. the noise sounds like it's coming from the right side of the car. It does make the sound in a straight line too, but only first starting out in first gear. I think that when I turn the wheel to the right the noise is greatest. I don't really care about the other stuff....tailgate latch, lock solenoid, etc....I just want the car in perfect running condition. It does have a brand new clutch and drives beautifully on the highway...it just feels like it sat for a while before I bought it. Anything I can lubricate without taking the car apart to give a a bit more smoothness??? I am very unfamiliar with legacys but I know WRX's very well and have done mild to moderate modifications on them. Unfortunately the legacys are not as similar to wrx's as I thought.
  22. crap...how much is a shot axle to have replaced? How dangerous is it to ddrive on one? I was thnking I should do the tranny fluids....Car has some beefy noisy tires on it, but it's more of like whining coming from the front on acceleration and deceleration. Cruising is fine and there is not really any noise.
  23. Okay so I got my 95 legacy L wagon today and noticed a couple of things.... 1. The shifter has tons of play and buzzes - I read the thread and I am going to replace the bushings 2. The rear tailgate is perfectly fine, but for some odd reason, the actual latch/handle to open it form the outside are completely rusted out...Sound famiiar???? easy to fix? Everythign works but the metal is so rusted that its basically dirt. 3. Power lock fuse is pulled because of a bad driver side solenoid...read the thread...gonna clean it and get a new one if cleanign doesn't work 4. When turning at low speeds and accelerating at low speeds, there is some kind of clicking sound...is this an axle? 5. The car drives wonderfully otherwise and I had her cruising at 75 with no problems at all, but it's quite loud....Sounds like the Loyale that I drove...Lots of drivetrain noise and deceleration noise...I am used to a wrx so is this normal for these cars? Other than that the car handles like a dream, starts every time faster than most new cars, and has NO leaks whatsoever. Am I screwed with these little things, or are they all no big deal? Thanks a ton! - Dan
  24. Yeah that looks mostly like my WRX's shifter parts. Should be easy to do this....BUT.... There is excessive play in the shifter.....like it's so loose that it feels like the car is never in gear. Someone told me that it's a tranny problem....I don't see how this is possible though because the tranny shifts fine and is very sturdy.....just when it comes to the shifter itself...if you push it to one side or put it in gear, it feels like it's out and doesnt spring back likeit's supposed to.....Aren't i correct in assuming that it's a bushing issue and not a tranny issue? HELP
  25. Hey guys.... Anyone ever change the shifter bushings in a 95 manual legacy??? How many sets of bushings are there? Anyone have a diagram?? The car I am buying is missing one of them so there is a ton of play in the shifter. I want to fix this so i know what gear i am in LOL ALSO - how easy is it to replace the timing belt, and what is the replacement interval for them? - thanks - Dan
