  1. Alright, thanks a lot everyone. I have a shop that specializes in Subarus, but it's all the way across town. The shop I brought it to is just a little shop and tire place that's a 5 minute walk from work and I figured they'd be fine to figure out where a leak is coming from. My car is not a turbo. 87 GL wagon, carbeurated. (EA82). I replaced the oil and water pump...that could be part of the problem since I'm a bit new to this...I have been smelling some coolant when I drive, but I've learned there could be a million reasons for that. There are no puddles of coolant under the car. I'll check today to see if I notice oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, but it sounds like I should take it to the better mechanic. I am losing coolant.
  2. Ok, thanks. The pressure test showed that there were no leaks, or as the mechanic told me, no external leaks, which he said meant either a cracked head or head gasket, and nothing else, I asked a couple times for him to confirm that those were the only things it could be. Jeffroid- I should be able to see a leaky gasket or cracked head? How? Would I just know it if I saw it or is there something specific to look for? I suppose a compression test is next...wonder why the garage didn't suggest one. I need to check both my oil and coolant to see if there's something that jumps out in those fluids, but for now all I know is that they found no external leaks, and I'm losing a good bit of coolant.
  3. After having a coolant system pressure test done, it sounds as though I either have a cracked head, or leaking head gasket. Is the only way to tell to go in and pull it all? I'm ok with replacing the head gasket myself (I hope), but will I be able to tell when I get there if that's the problem, or will I have to just replace it and see if that solves the problem? Also, if I end up doing the gasket, any special tools I need? Other than beer.. Thanks! The shop just told me I need to pull the engine for this.........is that right? Oh boy.
  4. How can I get my car to stop squeaking? The struts squeak, the brakes squeak, the wheels squeak. Sometimes it's not bad, but lately it's terrible. I hear the struts (or something) squeak at low speeds, my brakes are always squeaking, and sometimes I think it's wheels, although it could be the struts... I bugs the hell out of me! Do I just need to get over it?
  5. Ok, thanks. I guess there's a lot more options than I thought. I'll try to check tonight for steam, and look a little closer for residue around hoses. I'm hoping it's not the head gasket...
  6. I've been consistantly losing coolant lately, and I feel like I can smell it in the car, I haven't noticed any coming in the car, but I think I can smell it, I don't notice any deposits in the engine compartment, or puddles under the car.. What're the usual culprits?
  7. Cool, thanks. I'll check it out over the weekend
  8. There's been a couple times lately when I get in my car, turn it on, and my clock reads 1:00. ?? Any ideas? Fuse? Battery? BTW it's not 1:00 when it reads that, in case anyone's wondering if I'm just stupid or joking..
  9. Alright, thanks. The new fuel filter's been sitting in the back seat for over a month, I figure I can probably get around to this weekend finally..
  10. Ok, so... It started up just fine. Drove as fine as it usually does.. I checked the fuse box. It goes, from top to bottom Black, Green, Red, Green, I think. The botton Green, closest to the battery didn't have a wire or anything..that's from an option I don't have on this car I'm guessing, not a missing link ( ), right? They looked ok otherwise. It could have been the cold and moisture, but why? Plugs and wires are new. It would suck if this started to be a recurring problem. Could the fuse links be the cause of stalling, or just the not starting part??
  11. Alright, I'm about to go try it again, so I'll check that out. Thanks
  12. I've had a problem with some hesitation for a few months when accelerating, I bought a new fuel filter to see if that would help but haven't installed it yet. Today we got some rain/snow, colder temps than we've had for the last few weeks. Anyway, it started fine, I drove away, pulled onto the main street, it started to hesitate, then stalled out. When I try to start it, it turns over, but kind of gives me a couple quick turns then long, slow turns...Not the typical dying battery sound or anything.. It's an '87 GL wagon, carbed. Any ideas? Could it be as easy as a finally clogged filter? I'm going to try it again later today, but for now, it won't start.Thanks.
  13. Oh boy, this is gonna be fun! Thanks for the tips
  14. Cool, thanks everyone. Yeah, I should have mentioned just in case that I had already taken the cotter pins out:rolleyes: Ok, I'll get something better than WD-40 and I'll really crank on them without worrying about breaking my car.
  15. When you replace the rear drum brakes, to get the 36" nut off, do you just put it in 4wd and crank against it? I feel like I'm going to break something. Just wondering if this is the right way, and if anyone has any other advice about what I may run into replacing the rear drum brakes & cylinders. Thanks
  16. Ok I did a search and I'm confused. Depending on who you ask, the bleeding sequence is very different...So what's the correct bleeding sequence? I'm replacing my rear brakes and cylinders. Does that require that I bleed? Or am I Ok? I'd like to replace the fluid, but if I don't have to bleed doing the brake & cylinder work and it's that much of a pain in the #$5, I guess I'd maybe rather skip it. 87 EA82 wagon Thanks!
  17. The very last photo post on that cup holder thread seems like the best option. All the ones on the consoles will not work on my car, no room in there for anything, it's really busy between the 4wd lever and e brake. I'll have to look around at some stores
  18. that'd be cool if it did. The only one of those others that would work is the one in the vent. My e-brake and 4WD lever get in the way of putting one anywhere else on my console.
  19. Cool, thanks. That should give me enough ideas to figure something out.
  20. What do people do for cup holders? I hate those cheap ones that you shove down into the window well. What are the options? Just set my coffee on the dash and be real careful?
  21. I just found a bad leak that took forever to locate.. Was a coolant hose that goes to the carberator. Wonder if I really needed to replace the water pump....
  22. I put a center force clutch in my Toyota Pickup and liked it. Grips better on steep off road hills & such. I think if you're doing a lot of offroading, it's not a bad idea to get something stronger than a stock clutch, but...people seem to have gotten along just fine without them, so..
  23. Well..let's hope I did it all right. Thanks for the posts, but unfortunately I wasn't around to check any of them, since I was doing it during those times. So far no leaks coming out of anywhere. Mostly I'm just amazed it actually started back up and runs.
  24. I'm replacing my water and oil pumps this weekend, just wondering, other than the gaskets, if it's necessary to have any sealants on bolts or anything. Also, if anyone has any info that might be handy and isn't covered in the repair manual. I printed the timing belt instructions from the USRM, but other than that? Anything?
  25. Well, thanks for the advice everyone. I got the water pump, oil pump, and seals, as well as timing belts. I'm going to dig into it this weekend.
