  1. Great! Thanks a lot everybody. This'll be my first time tearing into a Subaru, I've always been a Toyota pickup guy, but recently downsized, and I'm finding there's a lot of similarities between my old '86 pickup and this wagon, except I don't fit so nicely underneath the car... But it sounds like this a job that's done from the top of the car, not the bottom. There's certainly some oil leaking, and I figure it's time to replace some stuff before winter and while I'm in there.
  2. Ok I'm sure this has been gone over, but if I'm going to replace the water pump, what are the things that I might as well replace while I'm in there? And any advice about tricks or special tools I'd really appreciate, plus sealants or whatever. Sorry everybody, it's leaking like crazy and I only have internet at work and I'm out of the office all week after 8am and can't find time to search archives!
  3. Thanks! I just bought this car for cheap and I know it has some issues, but all in all it's a solid car. You'll probably be hearing from me a lot until I get some experience working on this thing.
  4. Yes? What am I looking at cost and pain in my *** wise? And what are the ways to rule out anything else? No puddle underneath that I've seen, nothing coming out of the tailpipe..No overheating.
  5. I know that I used to know what this meant, but I forgot! The coolant has been low, and I just noticed that when I ran the heat today I thought I could smell some antifreeze. So obviously it's leaking, and making it's way into the vents... 87 GL wagon.
  6. Yeah, out here in Montana it can get pretty cold. I'm just east of the continental divide, which typically means it can be 30 degrees one day, and -30 the next. Almost everybody has block heaters...except my new/old subaru. Have any experience with negative temps and carbeurated engines? I love the snow, but it sure can be a hassle.
  7. Thanks for the help so far. The mechanic said that the antifreeze was too low to check. When I told the owner about that, he said the he remembers having to add some a few months back, but he hasn't noticed a leak, so I feel like if he's had to add some a few months ago and it's this low now, it's gotta be going somewhere. I'll check the oil. I assume I'm right about the fact that a few months(how ever many that is) after filling it, it shouldn't be as low as it is now without some kind of leak.. That link is great! That list should come with every used Subaru when someone buys one.
  8. I know the first rule is usaully to search through previous threads before starting a new one but... I'm buying an '87 wagon, 4clylinder, carburated, 4wd. 173,000 miles. Aside from typical wear, is looks like it's leaking antifreeze. The previous owner says he hasn't noticed smells or puddles under the car. What's most likely the case and how hard/expensive to fix myself? We brought it to a mechanic and they saw no obvious leaking of the head gasket or water pump, but he said that without cleaning the engine it'd be hard to be sure. Otherwise, what sorts of things are most common that I need to be aware of or look out for on this year car with this kind of mileage? Thanks for any info!
