Numbchux, Any idea if this event(or any others like it) is taking place this season (08/09)? It looks like a good time. Thanks, Sam

Hi, Me too! bluto2ooo at hotmail.com Thanks, Sam

Illinois finally gets snow!!! I have been havin a blast the last few snow falls but this has been the first time that we had drifting. Twice last night I had my belts jump out of time because of drifts, first time I needed to be towed and the second I was within walking distance of my shop. Funny, everyone was telling me that I didnt need to use my covers when I was looking around for new ones.

Soo.. here we go again. 1 by 1 problems pop up and so they fall before my trusty wrench set and snap-on vantage dmm.(dmm of the gods /bow) After putting about 200m (highway miles) on the rx after getting it running reasonably well(idles and drives fine, just no hard accel.), I had a chance to get it back into the shop tonight to troubleshoot the wot(or even heavy throttle.) stumble. It wasnt horrible, it just didnt pull if I put my foot to the floor. gawd I hope I havent reinjured my motor with some lean under boost detonation.. My fruitin tps sense wire goes from 5v+ at closed throttle to 3.5v at wot. Ok, thats diffrent. As long as I havent hurt the motor all will be forgivin. Compression test to come. It sounds fine but I couldnt hear the dead cyl when I bought the car either. always sounds more or less like a singer sewing machine. There is a forecast of possible snow and sleet this weekend. I hope I can get a new sensor by then... of course I also need a new blower motor resistor and blower motor. Oh yea, my brakes are also threatining to mutiny, the left rear is the loudest complainer( I was hoping they would hold out till I could swap to 5lug.) All in all I am content with the progress, each trip back to the shop knocks a few more tidbits off the to-do list. The fun stuff like IC and exhaust are getting closer too. Sam

Sooo.. 2 bosch injector female plugs about the same length at the same place on the engine harness. 1 has 12v+ and a grnd and goes to the idle control thing and the other has 5v+ and a ground and goes to the cts. If you do not have these in the right place your car is not happy. My car is now happy. I am now happy. After 2 months of waiting on parts, and dealing with frustrating silly problems my subaru is finally back on the road... and running on all 4 cyls. now all I need is some snow. Sam

grossgary, I have voltage going into and coming out of the sensor, tested on the harness side of the plug, thats why I didnt feel that the plug and contacts are at fault. I am curious to know if you still feel that your fix is necessary, did your plug and harness test the same way? I also pulled the leads out of the plug to check for corrosion in the wire itself and it was fine. anyone else?

Since reinstalling my engine I have had a steady ecs light, o2 light blinking code 21. I have been trouble shooting this problem abit but I dont have any idea what my known good values for the cts should be, there isnt any detailed info in the haynes manual. I also dont know if code 21 could be pointing in a another area besides just the cts. I have also read through a few problems/solutions that I have found searching old posts. these seem to all be related to bad plug and contact issues. The car iss usually about 30 deg. when I am working on it. I can get it to start with some pedaling/flooring of the gas pedal. It will run reasonably decent enough for a test drive but still not quite right. Idle is usually very high all the time. turbo was pretty cherry red after my last trip, timing has been checked( as near as possible with the idle where it is). The car never restarts when its hot. With a dmm I am reading a short spike of 12ish volts to the cts when the when the ignition is turned to the on position. 12v returns once the engine is cranked. I get 12v if I am grounded on the engine or the other pin of the plug. As for the grouund side, I have continuity to the engine and the neg terminal on the battery. I have checked the wiring back to the engine harness plugs and found no resistance on the dmm. I know on newer vehicles all sensor voltages are measured with a 5v current but I am a soob newb so this is all getting frustrating. any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam ps for anyone who saw my thread dealing with my cv issue, After undoing the cv nut the joint popped onto the shaft with just a little effort. 1 problem solved, 1 to go.
-
Mike had the right idea. It was the front left cv, the shaft came free on the hub side when I lifted the trans to pull the eng. I suppose. I am going to have to pull it apart to reassmble it, luckily all of the pieces are still intact after my drive. Ive never had a shaft come apart so easily before(Ive done lots of fwd eng swaps), big duh on my part on that one. I had skipped right past a cv falling apart and went onto internal trans issues. Thinking back I did wrestle the eng and trans around quite abit, the pilot was stuck on the trans input shaft, I eventually unbolted the clutch while the motor was still attatched to the trans. Thanks for the help. Sam

Ive searched around abit but was unable to come up with anything realting to my problem... If anyone has any ideas or experience with this problem I would love to hear about it. I have a 1989 rx with the d/r 5sp locking diff trans... I removed/replaced my enginge to fix a dead cyl. and a few oil leaks. prior to engine removal there were no driveline issues. Engine runing, in neutral, high or low, locked or not, I get no noise or drag or anything abnormal. Engine runing, trans in high or low, any gear, diff unlocked and I get no/very slight movement and some rubbing/drag type noise. no grinding/metal to metal noises Engine runing, trans in high or low, diff locked, and the car dives fine with no other noticeable noises or issues. I dove the car for a few minutes, and when trying to unlock the diff, the same problem would occur, when the diff was relocked, I was able to drive normally again. Hoping for any easy answer on this one. This car has been abit of a money pit for me =/ Thanks, Sam

I am envious.. Sooo much cleaner than my car. Sam -
Updated the to do list, Tires are on, I want snow!! Windshield replaced.. Found alot more rust than expected in th cowl area, abit irked about that. Trans and diff fluids to be changed today, gaskets and timing belts are ready to be done once I get my new heads. planing to pull the motor and redo all the gaskets next weekend New fenders , headlight/grill lower trim and whatever else I can find will be pulled from the u-pull-it next weekend. Pics to come one of these days Sam

Winterforce tires came in the mail today.. 42$ a piece on tirerack Please let it Snow here!!! Caboobaroo, That MO I sent you for the heads should help out with that tire problem.. hehe Sam

Feel guilty for talking about/owning/loving datsuns!? Never! I am here moonlighting from my datsun not the other way around. I dont feel bad though, I was drawn over to the "soob side" with visions of an awd snow fling'n monster. I also have a dime in the garage.. hehe Its nice to find people who are pasionate about these cars, it only makes sence that some would be into datsuns also. These are not only "drivers" cars but also tinkerers cars. They inspire people to no end. Back on topic though.. I cant belive there isnt more opinion on mufflers for these cars.. Seems like there are a lot of modded ea82t's on the board. Maybe Ill just build the exhaust for the dynomax I already have and buy a borla for the Z. Gotta try the 'trapp also.. hehe Sam
-
Northwet, Racer wholesale websites usually have them, pitstopusa.com is one Im not positive but I belive summit and jegs carry them also. I dont think anyone could not like the sound of the car I heard with 'trapps It was a built race motor with dual pipes all the way back to dual 'trapps. It had a very deep tone with that nice lumpy idle.. BIG cam, I havent heard and L series that lumpy since then. At full wail it held on to that deep tone and didnt start to just scream bloody murder like an open exhaust would. I have run my Z NA with a glass pack on it for many miles as well as completely open. I didnt hate it but I wouldnt say that it sounded good either. Sam
-
Bwahahaha I hadnt even considered a 'trapp.. I was laughed at for suggesting one on my 2.8t and havent looked back since then. I love em on na datsun motors with big cams.. imo the best sounding combo out there . I have a 3" inlet muffler in the shop right now too.. 18" I think? My friend had one on his fiat. I always thought it sounded hideous but he loved it. the car is down for a hi po motor build so I would be able to put that bad boy on the soob. Damn, I cant belive I never put that thing on my datsun.. It has been just sitting feet away from it. Gah.. I know what Im doin tommarow!!

Carfreak85, True, but I am enjoying bgd's "experiences" regarding exhaust diameters. I dont agree with what he has to say as it pertains to turbo exhausts but he is convinced. Maybe we should start a conversation about the merits of a sts rear mount(rear of the car)style turbo system on a soob.. That usually seems to fire up any board its posted on. As for a flowmaster on a soob(or other small displacement turbo motor) , I would be interested in hearing that, everyone loves the sound of a flowmaster equipped mustang. I cant imagine a 2.5" flowmaster would give any backpressure to to a 1.8l.. that is the usual size (x2)for 5L mustang. My personal Ideas on turbo exhaust run along the lines of what northwet posted, that is based on my experience, what I have read on msg boards and most importantly Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. Anyone running a borla? or one of the vortex tuned style mufflers? Sam

I will be doing the Brakes on my 89 RX soon and I was wondering If people had any particular fancy regarding the rotors and pads. I know you get what you pay for but I was planing on getting the beck arnley rotors through autozone(only ones they have availible) unless someone has a reason to go a diffrent route. Are rotors still availible through subaru? is it worth the cost? Any other aftermarket options out there? I would like to upgrade to xt6 bits and pieces but I havent found one yet! Thanks, Sam
-
I havent seen to much talk of aftermarket mufflers on the turbo motors and I know there are some members running stout exhausts. I am wondering what sounds good , Loud isnt necesarily bad, But I am in the moood for mellow. The car will have an uppipe made as well as 2.5"ss tube from the turbo back. I have experience with dynomaxs straight through turbo muffler on my 2.8t with 3" ss exhaust, I am happy with it overall ecspecially considering the price but at highway speeds and when I really get on it the thing is loud! I will be using this car mainly as a daily driver, 30 miles @ 75-80mph. Anyway, I would like to hear any experience had with aftermarket exhaust and mufflers.. good bad or otherwise. Thanks, Sam

Ok, My fun fun 60hr work week is over so its time to get back to the soob. Windshield is still on order. blah Hopefully caboobaroo will be getting back to me about sending me some heads. Headset on order to do the gaskets when the heads arrive. timing belt bits and pieces also. POR15 on order. I need to call soob heaven in WI to see if they have a hatch and doors, Im glad I saw that thread!! I should have the interior together and maybe that trunk hole fixed, not sure if I am going to cut holes in the car this weekend. I am going to refinsh the wheels(H-alloys,acid and spraypaint) and get new tires. Thanks for the opinion on the dynomax soobscript. I like it on my Z but it wails at full throtle when the R's get up there. Deffintly more of a growl than a tinny whine but loud anyway. Daeron, My hood is from a loyale, thats where the fenders are comin from also. As for the exhaust.. bigger is definitly better. I think I even saw a post for 3" for an ea82. That seems abit extreme to me but who knows. I will be happy with 2.5" and the price break that comes with it. I think I will order that stuff this weekend also. I didnt realize that the stero stuff was bizarre on these, thanks for the heads up, I guess one of the squareish radios is in order, Ill have to check into that more. As for my Z, its a 77 junkyard beast. turbo motor from an 82 with msns at the controls. all sorts of interesting jy parts making that thing go, I think I have every auto maufacturer represented under my hood. Ill post some pics of it also when I get hosting somewhere. Does anyone have any of the bits and pieces I need for the car? Ea82's are sort of hard to come by in the JY's around here. I have been to 8or 9 yards in the area and have come up with 6 wagons 1 4door 1 hatch and 1 xt. all NA cars. Anyway, another update to come at the end of the weekend... hopefully much progress to report. all coments welcome/appreciated. Thanks, Sam

Hello all, As the title goes, this will be my worklog on my new soob. This is also my first soob but I am an experienced mechanic so I fear no rusty bolt. I would like to use the log to keep track of the mods and maintence stuff that I will be doing to the car in the near future. I will get into the alt. title later in the thread. With what I have in mind I think This should be at least somewhat interesting. I wont be breaking any new ground here, just modding my rx for a little more power and hopefully maintain some reliability. The plan for the rx is to have a fun winter driver, I have been looking for an awd winter car for awhile now. the stars have aligned and I now have an rx. I am going to try to sort out most if not all of the maintence issues and get the upgrades done within the next month so the car is settled befor we get too deep into nasty weather territory. Now for the interesting stuff. MSnSextra/edis. I have this stuff around the shop already. Larger injectors. Supra, ford 2.3t and datsun turbo injectors on hand. Tmic. I have a thunder chicken IC in the shop.I may use a larger ebay stye but I think this may be overkill?? Fab intake, uppipe and exhaust. This will be my first my only performance $$ going out the door(besides some nice winter tires) The idea is to fab an uppipe in ss, similir to what other board members have done, I plan to flange this for t2 and t3 garret turbos. Exhaust is planned to be 2.5ss turbo to the back of the car. What kind of muffler sounds good on an ea82t?? Build the intake accordingly. Also plumb in a pcv vacum tank. As for the maintince and repair issues, the car isnt horrible but it has been awhile since this car has seen any love.:-\ While the car does run(relatively) well w/o overheating/smoking or pissing too much coolant or oil to the ground this is one sick motor. power seems ok but I wasnt expecting much from 111hp through an awd drivetrain I knew it was leaking oil onto the manifold when I bought it, from the left cyl. bank near the front(cam seal maybe? I picked up a new one) It also has some coolant loss issues and pleny of gurguling noises. Compression as checked yesterday shows front right cyl at 60psi, all others at 130ish... sooo, ************. this car runs awfully good on 3.5 cylinders. I am just suprised there isnt a dead miss, but the engine revs and cruises reasonably smooth and I got 25mpg on the way home, usually around 75mph. I am going to look around for a good long block or at least a set of heads befor I rip the motor apart, I dont want to end up with an inop car and a junk head. On to the other issues. Windshield. Fixed, found a ton o rust in the cowl =/ Hood. FIXED Doors. Door bottoms are rusty, 1 3dr spotted in the jy so far and the doors were worse than mine. Hatch. Same as the doors. Front fenders. Minor rust and dents, I have found some new ones, this car will be multi color in no time flat. Left rear fender flare rust. I have spotted a good patch panel, easy fix. Drivers side corner window trim is rusty. Need to find a replacement. Apillars have some rust. quick fix for now, Ill have to have the WS removed next summer to properly tackle this problem. Misc surface rust all over the body. I will be taking care of these as I go, can of white por15 is on order for all of the underside repairs Trunk well rust spot. This should be an easy fix, left rear of the trunk area, fist sized rust area. Reassemble the interior. Just need to pull hardware from the jy, years of being taken apart and halfassed reassembled.Started on it, about 1/3 done. properly mount the gauge pod. One leg missing, Ill fab another at work. Rewire the hellas. Im not crazy about how theyre wired at all. Replace broken hella mount. Replace all fluids in the car. Trans, diff, oil change. PO put heavy weight oil in the car and some john deere crap in the power steering. blah. Distributer has 1 broken bold and 1 apparently crossthreaded bolt in it, not secured at all. No timing belt covers. Find some mo. blower switch only works on one speed. fix it Brakes are just about shot. fix em Tires are dookie. replaced! bring on the snow! passenger side mirror cracked. Install a radio. I have a long commute to work.. haha. Clean and Paint H Alloy wheels Done Mount CF dash gauge pod Done Wow.. seems like alot now that I have typed it all out. I am still very optimistic about the car over all though, most of this list should clear quickly though. Questions... At 60 psi, is it probably just a hg or could I have a bad bad head? I have heard about cracking between the valves. What muffler sounds good on an ea82t with 2.5"ss exhaust? I dont mind loud, the Z has 3"ss and a dynomax turbo muffler on it. I think there would be some merit to having the car at least a little quite so I can hear the traction level. Has anyone dyno'd garrett t'3s or sr20det t25's on these motors? more Q's to come later. Parts needed. Possibly heads or a long block hella light mount 2hella light covers timing belt covers, all the pieces and bolts. set of wheels for snow tires doors hatch bottom trim for the drivers side back glass. Long post. All comments, advice or questions are welcome. Updates to come. Stay tuned. pics also if I can host em somwhere, doesnt seem to be much storage on the site? Thanks, Sam

Thanks for the welcome, as for the clear budget and restraint comment, I have to admit I had to laugh as I typed that. I may have a chance at it though since I dont have any rediculous goals (power or otherwise) in mind for the car. My Z is my money pit and I am trying to have it ready for a full season of track use next summer so that will also help keep things in check. I also have a Megasquirt, harness, injectors, a tmic and a few diffrent t3's laying around the shop. biggest purchase should be ss for the header and exhaust. As for power of the rx vs the z, its something Im not even thinking about. The Z is already double stock hp(turbo motor) and should be about triple for next year. there is just no comparison to be made.. not without thinking of wild drivetrain swaps and I am trying vey hard not to let my mind wander in that direction. I am curious now about the rx's weight, late Z's like mine are about 2700lbs fully dressed, mines abit less. I would be surprised(happily) to find the rx lighter than that. I dont have any plans or seriously lightening the car either. Good luck on the wagon sonic, sub lsd's are pretty easy to come by arent they? Thanks again, Sam

Hello USMB! Great website, thumbs up to all the good info on the board! My name is Sam and I am a new/old subaru owner! I am normally a datsun guy but I am stoked about the new soob! I bought subiemech85's rx last weekend and drove it home, 375ish miles. I am planing on using the rx as a winter car and I hope to get some rally action in as well. I am hoping for a nasty winter! I have been wanting an awd winter car for awhile (wrc fan) but this is the first year things came together for me.... The rx will be a huge improvement for me as my last few winter cars were.. well.. less than suitible for winter driving, ecspecially considering IL's salty roads. Last year it was my Z (open diff at the time, welded now) befor that it was an svo(very tight lsd) befor that the Z again.. soo lots of time facing the wrong direction! I will be posting a worklog of sorts to get feedback on the planed/perfomed work on the car, everything from maintinence to bodywork and perfomance upgrades. Lots of pics, Lots of info. Lots of Questions!! THe rough plan for the car is a clean, reliable driver, with some modest perfomance work. probably in line with what I have done to my z but with a little restraint and a clear budget.. haha(IC, standalone, susp. etc.) Anyway, Ill be searchin and readin'.. I already have a half dozen or so questions that I havent been able to find answers to and a list of parts I need but Ill save those for next time. The work has begun, work log to come! Thanks, Sam
