  1. one of those aluminum "ramps" actually came off and is stuck inside-- I have recovered one of the the two screws, it was lying in the track. The air deflector is in great shape-- that was the first thing I checked! Thank you for your help- I'll keep you posted on what I find behind the glass.....
  2. Sorry-- 1990 legacy, It opens all the way and it almost closes all the way but just shy about a 1/4"--- I see the screws with plastic covers I will pop it out and see if I can get those lost parts out! Thank you
  3. Is there a way to remove the glass from the sunroof without tearing out the interior? On the sunroof there are four small "ramps" that are held on by screws on the top of the track to push the sunroof up when it closes--- well one of mine fell off and is stuck somewhere inside the sunroof track- way in the back where I cannot see... So it would be real handy if subaru had some method of removing the glass without taking out the whole darn thing! Any suggestions?
  4. How do i by-pass the Evapo. thermo switch on a '90 legacy? -- I only want to do it temporarly because I am trying to track down a A/C problem... my switch has three wires coming out of it, which ones do I put a jumper bettween? Everything in my A/C system checks out good, good pressure, all relays are good, all fuses good, compressor is good--- the only things I have yet to test are the evaporation themo switch and the A/C controls themselfs....
  5. What exactly do I ask for at the parts store? I tried this before but the people at the parts store dont have a clue to what I am talking about! They don't know about any other parts than what their computer says goes with the car...
  6. I have been having some pinging problems with my '90 legacy... I used some good quality fuel systen cleaner (redline) and I changed the plugs and I have been running good quality gas (chevron premium) -- any suggestions? The pinging only happens when it is warm outside...
  7. how did you bypass the thermo-switch? I have a 90' legacy and have been trying to track down some A/C issues and the thermo switch and the A/C controls are the only two things I have yet to check... When I unplug the themo switch there are three terminals- which ones did you connect the jumper to? By the way, how difficult is the thermo switch to replace if it is the problem?
  8. yes, that is exactly what I have under the hood, 4 relays and 2 fuses -- and they have all been checked and rechecked again! I think that I will check the evaporator switch and then check the A/C switches themselfs and if I don't find the problem there--well, I don't know, everything else seems to be in working order! Thanks for your help, I will keep on tracking this down!
  9. Okay, I Checked that under dash relay for the A/C and when I push the A/C button on the dash the relay does not cick, or activate, or whatever you what to call it! I did however check the relay a couple days ago to see if it worked or not and it tested good. Here's another question-- what about the evaporator thermo-switch? I have read in the forums that alot of people have problems with it... How do you access this switch? I was looking around under the dash and I spotted the wires that go to the switch, but the switch appears to be quite hard to access! On the dash buttons, when I push the A/C button I can hear the fan come on, but none of the A/C relays activate (the main relay, or the under dash one)-- could the problem be with my A/C controls? Worn contacts or something like that? Is this vey common? Or do you Think the evaporator themo-switch would be a more likely cause? It seems like every thing else in the system is working fine- compressor, relays, lowpressure switch are all good.. what should I look at next?
  10. I will check tommorrow, it is getting dark now! ----I assume there is only one under the dash, the haynes manual in chapter 3 refers to it as "air conditioning control relay" --- am I correct in assuming this?
  11. Okay, this is what I found out today about my A/c system... I checked all four of the relays in the under hood relay compartment (and the fuse in there too) and they all tested good. Then I checked the "air conditioning control relay" that is under the dash on the passenger side, and it tested good. So then I thought I would put a jumper wire accross the low pressure switch terminals and see if the compressor would kick on, but it did not... I did check the compressor yesterday to see if it worked by applying 12v to it and it kicked on, so I know it does work. ---- sooo, my question to you all is-- what would you check next? I don't own any fancy air conditioning tools or gauges, so what would you suggest to the average backyard mechanic to check next? I do own a haynes manual, and was thinking about checking the air conditioning control panel (buttons) to see if they were funtioning properly, but it seemed to me to be a real pain, so, I thought I would ask you all what you thought first!
  12. I checked the low pressure switch (for the a/c) with my multi-meter and it showed continuity through the switch... So I think everything is fine there. Out of the four under hood relays which one is the a/c relay, or at least, the one responsible for engaging the compressor? On the cruise control, If the switch on the brake pedal was not adjusted properly would it affect the brake lights-- or is there a separate switch for them?
  13. oh yeah, I checked the clutch switch and every time it is pushed in while the cruise is on I hear a relay click under the dash, so I assume it is working properly...
  14. Alright, I'm fairly new to the subaru world, so please excuse my ignorance! I was working on my air conditioning system in my '90 legacy (trying to find out why it was not working at all, and the compressor was not coming on!) and I first checked the low pressure switch and it was good, so then I applied 12v to the compressor and 'click' it began to spin, so then I figured that the next step would be to check the relay--- well the under hood relay/fuse compartment shows 4 a/c relays and the manual shows that they arent all just for the a/c-- some are for the fan and other such things, but the manual also shows a "main a/c relay" and i'm not sure where this is.... Could someone please tell me which one to check??? Or where to check? By the way when the car is running and the a/c button is pushed none of the relays in this compartment "click"... One other question-- my cruise control has been working some days and somedays not... I push the cruise control button on the dash and I can hear the relay click and see the light on the switch comes on, but when I try to set the speed with the lever on the steering wheel nothing happens... when it is working I can hear a relay click when the the speed is set, but when it is not I do not hear the relay click... Where are these relays and what common problems do people have with this system? I checked the clutch switch and the brake switch and they appeared fine (visually) but I did not have time to take them out for a continuity test... What do you all think?
  15. I just bought the car about a month ago... so I don't know about past summers... I will try some of that redline additive and see what happens! However, I am still interested in the different heat range of plugs... any suggestions?
  16. well I will try the premium gas as soon as I need to get more gas-- at about $3.15 - $3.20 a gallon it kinda sucks to run premium! What heat range of plugs would you reccomend? At the parts store I always just ask for the plugs that are supposed to be for my car... I usually buy NGK, Denso, or Bosch...
  17. Heres a question..... I have a 90 subaru legacy and now that the air is warming up outside it has started pinging under acceleration, since the timming is not adjustable, what could be causing this?
  18. Changed purge solenoid, cleaned up connections on starter wires -- all codes gone, and no check engine light anymore! Thanks for your help
  19. I was thinking about the ignition switch... since there is not a whole lot of different componets in the starting system! I wiil check there next... as far as the purge soleniod goes-- now that I know where it is and I have a parts car I think I will just swap it out and see how it goes! BY the way, how hard is it to change the ignition switch?
  20. Thanks for the info for the purge valve... the neutral saftey switch, if it is funtioning correctly, should not allow you to start the car with the shifter in any other position that neutral- right? My car is a 5sp manual, I thought they only put neutral saftey switches on autos? Maybe I'm wrong... I do know the car will not start without the clutch in though!
  21. I have a 90 subaru legacy LS and I was wondering where the "canister purge solenoid" is located and what it looks like--- it comes up as one of my touble codes-- currently I have a car I can rob parts off of and would like to swap it out while I have the chance! One of my other codes is #12 starter switch, I figured that this was more than likely was refering to the starter solenoid so I swapped the starter with one from the other car and then tried to clear the codes and it was still there... What else could cause it to throw this code? Like I said before I would really like to fix this while I still have a parts car!!!
