rear end noise
aartod replied to aartod's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I was crawling around under my car looking at all of the possablilitys for the source of of my problem and I wiggled the drive shaft at both ends looking for freeplay of any sort and I also shook and wiggled the center support bearing and now the noise has dissappeared.... I am quite sure that it will be back, and now am not so sure that it is the rearend that is the cause of my problems! -

I changed the diff gear oil and replaced it with 85w and there was no change in the noise... so much for the easy way out! -
rear end noise

BY the way, my car has a 5 speed... What years of legacys had the same rear end? Are the loyale or impreza rear ends the same? Did all of the legacys around 1990 have the same gear ratio? The local junk yard wants about $200 for a used one... I think I will search craigslist! -
My rear end on my 90 legacy started "howling" yesterday... I assume it is the rear end and not the wheel bearings because the noise does not change while cornering. The noise increases greatly while decilerating (I think because of the differant load put on the rearend)... So, to get to the point, what rear ends are interchangeable? And another question, is there anything I can do to to keep it alive alittle longer? I dont have alot of time to work on it right now! Any advice would be great!!!

suggestions?

My friend just suggested the throw-out bearing last night.... so I decided to give it a test drive and check out this theory---but it would not make the noise yesterday so I guess I will just have to wait! Yes, I replaced the axles about 6 months ago.... I will check those heat shields, although it dosent sound any thing like one-- but you never know! -

---and by the way, yes, I checked the trans gear oil and it is clean and full! It is a 5 speed manual trans... -
I have a 1990 legacy and yesterday it started making a whining noise from some where in the drive train... it sounds like the classic wore-out bearing whining sound but it changes pitch when I shift gears or am down shifting which would lead me to belive it would be a trans related problem. When I get home (if it is not raining or snowing) I am going to jack it up and check the side to side play of the wheel bearings and try to eliminate that as a culprit. Any other suggestions? Are there and common problems that I should check for? I wouldnt think it is the rear end due to the fact that the sound changes when I shift... The gear/bearing whine was very noticable for about 5 min and then went away for about 10 min and came back for another few miniutes. What do you all think?

My clutch on my '90 legacy started slipping a bit today.... so my question is for you all is-- besides changing the clutch and pilot & throw out bearings and the rear main seal is there any thing else I should change while I have the trans out? What is this oil separator plate and what years did they come in plastic or metal? Is there a gasket on the oil separator plate that needs to be changed?

tire size

How much height is gained from using outback struts? I was really hoping to not change anything except the tires! -

I guess I should have been more clear... By larger I mean taller. I have wacked a few rocks on logging roads and am trying to get some more ground clearance-- and no I dont want to lift it (although that would be really cool!) -
This weekend my car is due for it's oil change... I think I might give this ATF flush a try. The previous owner of my legacy was not so hot at routine maintenance... maybe I can get lucky and get the cheap easy fix! If anyone else has any advice about the ATF flush or any other engine flush I be happy to hear about it! By the way, thanks for the info on lucas-- I am glad I never tried that!!!

My 90' legacy uses about the same quantity of oil as you described and I was wondering what exactly "seafoam" is??? Within the last 10,000 miles it has greatly increased its oil consumption and I thought I could give this seafoam a try.... maybe i'll get lucky or maybe not! What are you guy's thoughts on the oil additive "lucus"? Alot of people have told me to try it over the years but I have yet to do it!

2.5 engine???
aartod replied to aartod's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Thanks for the info... I'll think I'll stick to 2.2's for now! 2003 is a little too new for me... -
How difficult is it to replace the two seals in the trans that go to the front cv shafts? I am replacing my front cv shafts today and noticed that one of my trans seals may be leaking -- although it is hard to tell, due to the fact that my cv joint spewed grease all over the place! Is this a difficult task and how do I go about replacing them? Any suggestions?

I have a '90 legacy and my while out on logging roads I have put a few dents and dings in my exhaust heat shield and now they rattle like crazy---and they are driving me crazy! all the bolts are tight they just dont fit like they used to, so I was wondering what might happen if I removed them? Anything bad? Would the increased heat melt any near-by componets or wires? I hope not because I would love to trash them!

I have a 90 legacy and I was wondering how easy it is to change the clutch cable... I know it should be easy, but you never know, sometimes its the easy ones that are the pain! Here's another question-- my engine is getting old and is starting to use a bit of oil, where is a good place to buy new/used engines? I have rebuilt many of different engines through-out the years but I have grown sick of working on cars and would much rather just swap it out when the time comes... any thoughts?
