Ok. After re-adjusting the shift linkage (it was hitting the driveshaft...hehe) all gears work fine, except 4th. When shifting to 4th it will feel like it locked in but as soon as I give it some power it pops out. I have checked the linkage again and it doesn't seem to be binding, I have strengthened the spring/ball assemby that holds the shifter in position but it still does this. Only when I shift to 4th with *authority* does it stay in fine - if I shift lightly it will pop. After doing some research on this subject I have found people blame the synchro rings, however I do not see how this could cause the gear to pop since all they do is equalize gear speed as the collar slips into position. What could be causing this?? On a somewhat related note has anyone had a positive experience with oil additives that help weak synchro rings (1st gear this time)?

First, I would like to thank everyone for their guidance in making this possible. I have just finished installing a 5spd XT6 FT4WD transmission in my 94 Loyale (which took all weekend) and I would like to share my experience. The only parts I really needed to buy were 25 spline XT turbo driveshafts (used 4WD 5spd). Other parts included new pilot and release bearings, clutch disk, and rear main seal. The swap itself was actually quite easy, but I did encounter the following issues. Rewire the 4wd indicator switch on the tranny to accept the Loyale harness - just cut and solder 2 wires... Modify the exhaust hanger bracket on the rear of the tranny (move about 1 inch towards the driver’s side) Shifter linkage is different as the FT tranny is longer at the shifter mount – I would recommend getting the linkage from a ft4wd gl-10 (or XT if that would fit?). I chose to cut and weld my current linkage but this seems to have given me issues with shifting that I’ll look into soon (binding and such) The car feels so much better now, drives smoother and feels more solid, and no more wheelspin! Once the shifter issue is worked out it should be perfect. Now to wait for snow..... If anyone has a set of shift linkage that will fit this setup, I'd like to buy if you want to sell....

I guess it doesn't matter anyways, turns out the listing was wrong. The ad was for 2 Loyales with one bad clutch. If anyone near Winnipeg (unlikely) wants 2 white w/blue interior Loyales, both 5spd pt4wd they're only $500 for both.

I seem to remember seeing such rims on large chevy vans, but haven't seen any since. I wonder how heavy they are?
-
I'm sure I pulled this pic of the site at some point, but can't remember who's car it is! I really love those rims, does anyone know what they are? I can see they're 6 bolt so.... Chevy, Toyota? 15 or 16 in? I've been searching for hours, I give up! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18141&cat=500&ppuser=22507

Can the clutch disk from a Loyale be used in a 91 Legacy (both 4x4)?
-
I have the feeling this has been tried, but just want to make sure... Are the axle splines (outer) the same on the front and rear of EA82s? If so, couldn't you take 4 rear XT6 hubs and mix and match? Perhaps the same idea could be applied to using a regular EA82 front disk/hub fit onto the rear axle?

Up to this point, I have liked EVERY Subaru car, especially the Impreza. This is just....ouch. -
Ok. So I will take a 5spd FT4WD tranny from an '88 XT6 and put it in my '94 Loyale non-turbo which has a 5spd PT4WD tranny. Both have 3.90 diffs. And I will use the front axles from a 5spd xt turbo, or auto xt turbo. Sounds ok? Just making sure here.... As a side note, I am very impressed with the interchangeability (new word!) of these cars.

Well, since the topic has gone towards autos suddenly, are the front axles from a turbo auto able to fit in a manual xt6 ft4wd?
-
Here is a link to a 3d model of a loyale I made with a voxel editor, might try to make some other models too. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=17754&limit=recent

Beautiful. That is the perfect transmission for what I want, do they have diff lock too? I may have found one in a northern state too. Has anyone dealt with Atlas Auto parts in St. Paul, Minnesota?
-
Interesting... Does this xt6 tranny use the same front driveshafts as a 3.7 ft4wd or a 3.9 pt4wd? Did they come with center diff lock? Just to confirm, this will mate up with a ea-82 4cyl?
-
Is it possible to change the 3.7 gears in the front diff of an FT4WD tranny with the 3.9 from a PT4WD? Or, is the center diff unit able to attach/install in a PT4WD case (not likely, but just had to ask)? Also, are the rear axles the same for a PT and FT 4WD setup or is there a different spline count as on the front?
-
Wow, I feel alot better... and alot worse. I had the chance to get a complete drivetrain and engine from a turbo XT for 180$ which I was told had awd. HOWEVER I looked at it and at a glance assumed someone had been mistaken and it was just another PT4WD and therefore forgot it. Now it's crushed and gone.... oh well, if there was one there should be more. Would anyone in the North Dakota/Manitoba (or other Canadian provinces) have these parts for sale? One other question: is the driveshaft length or splines different for FT and PT? Also are the rear axles the same or different for a turbo 3.7 or N/A 3.9 diff? Thanks for all the helpful and quick replies!

Firstly, allow me to apologise for what must seem like a very obvious question to most of you. I have a 1994 Loyale wagon 5spd pushbutton 4WD and would like to swap in an AWD/FT4WD instead. So my question is this: Is there another AWD trans from an EA82 car (other Loyale, XT, ect) that will drop right in, or is it possible to use an AWD trans from a newer car such as a Legacy with minor modifications? This car has been so fun to drive during the winter, but summer with only FWD is torture. Thanks!!
