Changing Instrument Panel bulb colors
JohnKos replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry about reviving this thread but is there a special type of LED to use? Most of the ones i've seen run on a lower voltage than 12V. do you have to step the power down? -
Plug wires

I was asking more for the price difference in the wire sets. Is more expensive better? -

Gloyale, which of these do you recommend? I have a 2.2 http://www.speedycarparts.com/catalog/index.php?N=4294965269%201719%2011736&Ntt=ignition+wire+set&Nr=OR(AND(make:Subaru,model:Legacy,year:1997),AND(universal:1))&Vi=4294965269%201719%2011736&mk=Subaru&md=Legacy&y=1997&No=10&Npp=10 -

Looks like Belden is sold at NAPA. Other posts here for my 87 gl said to get tuneup parts from NAPA. Guess things are different for older and newer gen. cars? -
Plug wires

167,000 miles. just had an axle/cv replaced on the left front. other than a hesitation upon acceleration the car is fine. if it had a carb i would think the accelerator pump wasn't working. -
I bought a used 97 legacy L a few weeks ago and saw it had newer wires installed. The are Belden Premium 7mm Cable SAE Class F. Anyone know if they are OK for the car. I've seen in other posts that having OEM wires are prefered. The car seems to run fine but I only have my old 87 GL coupe to compare it to. Just put in NGK plugs if that makes any difference.

Abs?

Not quite the four letter word I would use. -
Abs?

I said above they were brand new. its too damn cold out to look at the brand but they are "A" rated for heat and traction. The ABS kicks in even in the flat and going relatively slow in the snow. The brakes get hard as a rock and pulse. Ive even had it kick in while stopping at an interesection and hitting some gravel. Its a little disturbing not knowing if your car will slow even during a routine stop. -

Tires are brand new and if i drove any slower there wouldn't be any need for ABS. I've driven a jeep with ABS and the vehicle STOPPED it didn't fight my brake foot for control of car. -
I searched the forum on this and didn't seem to get a definative answer. Does ABS suck on the 97 Legacy? i got a rude awakening the first time I slid thru a stop sign going at a speed I could easy have stopped at in my 87 GL. I know the book says it will increase the stopping distance but 2-1/2 to 3 times the distance is a little extreme. Is this a common thing? I just installed new brakes and rotors on the car 2 weeks ago when I bought it.

I had to remove the fuse holder to be able to reach the connectors, but it worked thanks.

Whats wrong with accel? I used what subiemech85 recommended in his post re: engine health. "check ignition system for proper performance, change cap and rotor to napa premium made in japan, switch to accel 8140c coil -- but keep the old one, and the #1 thing to do is put in NGK BPR6EY-11"

I plugged the box back in for the heck of it and the key in the ignition chime started dinging. Guess i can unplug it again since it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the operation of the car.

Well, its in a done. sounds quite good with the stock speakers. I rewired the front speakers and used the common ground for the rear. Once i figured out the colors and which wire was positive for the front speakers i was set. Only funny thing was the power line that switches on with the ignition wasn't red or yellow. It was a colored wire with a color stripe. I don't remember the name of the install kit i used but i worked great too. Just needed to bend back some metal on the left metal bracket that was in the way. Still dont know what the black box is. Thanks everyone for your help.

Well whatever it is, I unhooked it and i'll see if anything craps out on me. Looks like i have a little wiring and altering of the metalwork in the radio compartment to do this weekend. Thanks everyone.
-
Thanks. Since you've done a few installs, any words of advise? I've seen other posts that talk about adding wires to the speakers because they have a common ground. And is your radio solidly mounted to the inner steel brackets or just hanging off an install kit face plate?

While trying to figure out how to install a new radio in my 87 GL Coupe i came across a black box with wires going into the front. I've seen mention of a trip computer in that area. What does it do and can I just unhook it without causing any trouble?
