Mechanic in South Vancouver Island
Martin replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I seem to just come and search on the board or post a question if I cant find an answer to some problem I am having. The Haynes repair manual is also useful to have around. I am not particularly fond of any shops in Vic. Sometimes I will go if something is really seized on (damn rusty prone climate) but other than that I try to do it myself. Seem to have less and less time for that these days though. -

Yeah, crappy tires doesn't have listings for the back ones. i can't remember the part numbers... but I know places like Gorge, NAPA, or whoever you like in Vic should have a listing for them. -
No, you aren't allowed to. I have been eyeing those for years, haha.

Could be the bulbs themselves. There is a different filament for the low beams than the high beams. Both would get the same amount of use if they were replaced at the same time before, therefore dying at the same time now.

CV's aren't that hard to replace. Not as fun when the weather is bad and you dont have a garage though. I have gotten mine from crappy tire and they come with a lifetime warranty. So far they have been holding up well. What sort of further work are you looking to do? -
SHE RUNS!! But Funky Turbo...
Martin replied to phishy75's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did the pass side, but the 500km was it's test run, haha. I think she is leaking from a bunch of other places too, so i'm gonna get it all cleaned up and see where it is exactly from. I also think some of it might be burning, but on an old engine when it's reving at 4 k plus for a while, it's bound to be burning some, haha. Sounds like you just have to drive the turbo wagon hard, and it will be fine, haha. I bet it needs some filters and other stuff changed. Also, is the gas the stuff that has been sitting in it for a while? -

Hey, glad to hear that you got it all back together!! Of course there is something else once you fix one thing. I might be playing with mine some more tomorrow. I managed to use quite a bit of oil going to the mountain and back... but of course that's what happens when I giv'r the whole way. -

Looking good guys! -
So I'm sure this has been posted somewhere, but searching for pcv related words is hard as it's too short or too common. After seeing the hoses on phishy's car, I am sure mine are pretty bad too. I cleaned them a while ago, but they are just really brittle. I think I read somewhere that you can put a filter on the passenger side, and then just a run a hose from the drivers side to the pcv valve. Or I will just keep the set up the same, but with new hose. What sort of hose is suggested for this? The vented gases must be hard on certain materials... Thanks.

A friends. I dont even think I have time to start working on mine this weekend. Wheeling does sound tempting though... If you wanna pick up some stuff for me from the yard that would be nice heater blower fan resistor pair of mudflaps front left plastic wheel-well thingy-ma-bob piece of trim around the radio the tray under the radio (from a car with no cassette) 2 loyale "spoke" looking hubcaps. If any of that is around at good Roland prices, I'll pay you back later. I gotta make this Loyale look good. As you can see it needs some work after removing all the dirt from it, haha.

Sounds like you guys will have a fun day at the yard and drooling over subes. I'm gonna need to make a trip eventually, but tomorrow I am working on cleaning up a '94 loyale to sell....

So, I just saw an ad for a 92 loyale (5speed S/R) 280,000km, NO RUST! Strong runner, no leaking/burning oil and not a bad price either... My 87 GL (5speed DR) 340,000km is starting to get rusty and the carb'd engine lacks power compared to the SPFI. My GL is full of new parts and conversions like rear discs. Those would be swapped (even though I dont have time or space), and other creature comforts like map lights are easy to do. But I think I will miss my D/R too much! I know the D/R can be put into the Loyale, but with all the vacuum operation of the S/R, can it go into a carbed GL? Honestly I dont think I would even have time for that, as I would have to sell the GL ASAP to pay for the Loyale. Why must I be tempted by newer vehicles...

Hey Jon, you should call around to see where they have one. That way Trevor could pick you up one on the way down if it's in Ladysmith or something. Hopefully Sooke has one for you.

Hey, glad to hear that you finally got it out and that it just needed some force like I was telling you the whole time, haha.

What part of the island are you from? There are a few guys on here from the island. -
Yeah, I might swing by tomorrow to see your subes. I'm sure you will be out wrenching, hehe.

I could come by break something else for ya... then the intake would be the least of your problems.

I'm losing coolant - head gasket??
Martin replied to phishy75's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, this is about the longest BC, espeically Island post that I have even seen. A meet would be good. I have a bunch of other friends who also have older subarus, but just dont use the board. I will be up island for most of xmas, and driving around in the snow is pretty much a requirement for a meet. That or just some meet to talk subarus, and go for a convoy. What page is this suction valve on? -

Yeah, I know you do. Trying to bust me for not studying for my exams... hahaha. He said you were having some Subaru problems... so I though I would try to see what you got yourself into. Got any pics of your subes? -

Hey, you should definitely check on that external leak first, especially since it's an older car, and hoses just go. I just had my upper radiator hose get a pin-hole leak and it would spray coolant, so that I thought it was leaking from the block. But since you also just had it apart, it could be a rebuild error, like not using sealant or improper torque specs. Sweet, white smoke from the tailpipe would suggest the gasket/headgasket theory. And yes jazzician, there are some good places for subaru parts, bit of a drive from Saanich though. -
wheels/rims Q's & requests...
Martin replied to Martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's why I am trying to get some people to post up some pics of their loyales with alloy rims or wagon wheels to see which looks best. When you just look at a wheel, they look pretty good. But when you see it on a car, just doesn't always seem to work. Also found a pic of ManyaiK's car, and the rally alloys look really good on it. http://usmb.net/albums/Off-Roading/CAM_0079.jpg Now just to find a good notched alloy pic, and maybe a good black and white wagon wheel pic. -
wheels/rims Q's & requests...
Martin replied to Martin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey edrach, thanks for the offer, but I have a line on a few different models up here for about the same price. Still trying to make up my mind about steel vs alloy. -
So... I got some winter tires given to me that still have some life in them. I just need to get some rims and everything will be great. I currently just have stock black rims, and was going to just get some more plain ones, or some wagon wheels... but I can get alloys for the price. Then I would have to put my winter tires on my current rims and current tires on new alloys. (kind of a pain) I hear alloys are a lot lighter, what other benefits would they have? How strong are they? I was also thinking of painting the wagon wheels black... Can some people post some pics of their loyale style wagons with alloys or 8 spoke wagon wheels. Specific alloys of interest and availability are: rally (8-hole), Notched, and H-style. I know what they look like on the wheels page, but it's hard to see if it actually looks good overall. Thanks.

Hey, so my GL jus started leaking coolant tonight, which really sucks because I was planning on going on a surf trip in the morning. It is only leaking when it is running and seems to be from the back right of the engine. I can't tell if it's from a hose of the headgasket. I have yet to check to oil dipstick and will do further work in the morning, but was just looking for ideas. How hard is it to replace a head gasket? It's ea-82 carb'd engine. I really hope it's nothing bad as I am starting school and otherwise poor.

94 Loyale speedo error
Martin replied to BobMadison2004's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That or you can find the speedo unit from a wrecker and put that one in instead.
