  1. Turbone I worked up Sitka on a Charter boat and yeah I made plenty of money...unfortunately I need to save as much as possible for school. I've heard about converting these cars to disks but I've kinda wondered if its within my ability? I'm sure there is a write up on this but what are all the parts I need? Thanks.
  2. I was gone for about 3 months to Alaska for the summer but now I'm back in Spokane for school. I'm really happy because the subie is still running just as good as when I left it. My question is about my rear brakes, its an 84 4wd wagon with drums and I've tried everything but I cant get the rear adjusters to budge!! I tried soaking them with penetrating oil and heating them up with a torch but nothing seems to work. I havn't really looked at them to closely but it looks like I can remove to adjusters and get new ones? Is this a dealer only part or maybe the junkyard? Thanks guys and its good to be back.
  3. I've been meaning to change my front main out as it looks pretty straight forward. Its not leaking bad but its leaving an oil stain under the hood now and I would like to take care of it before it gets worse. This is step 4 in ridding the subie of oil leaks. Does anyone know the procedure and what tools I will need, ea-81. I have already taken off the main pulley once to get to the oil pump when I replaced that a year ago so I know how big of a pain that can be (I did the bump the starter trick someone suggested on here). I guess my main concern/ question is that once I get the main pulley off what do I use to get the old seal out? The radiator is right there so I really can't see in to where the seal is. What do you guys do? After that is there a special tool to install the new seal and do you put anything on the new seal for installation?
  4. So I can buy just the adjusters for my drums, or are they a junkyard find?
  5. I posted this awhile ago but then I kinda forgot about my brakes for awhile. I went out the other day and tried to adjust my rear brakes (84 4wd wagon). I can't get the adjusters to budge. I think part of it is I can't get a good hold of the adjuster since it has a square end? Sprayed penetrating oil all over, tried heating them up with a torch, nothing. I'm almost certain there far out of adjustment too. With the back wheels off the ground and my brother on the brakes I could turn the wheel with my hands. What should I do? Anyone have some other ideas, is there an actual tool for the adjusters or am I supposed to use a crescent wrench?
  6. I was looking at a 2000 impreza sport (or was it an outback sport) the other day and I asked the owner if it had the 2.2 or 2.5, they just gave me a blank stare. I checked out a few things under the hood but since I've only owned old 80's subies I don't really know how to tell the difference between the 2.2 and the 2.5. When your just looking at the motor how do you know what it is? The car seems in good shape but if its the 2.5 I will definately walk away, I don't want to deal with those problems.
  7. So if I can't replace the ASV right now it would be a good idea to get a piece of screen and put it over the top of the carb? Then none of the pieces of the burned up ASV would get in the carb, right?
  8. Did a search for this but didn't come up with anything. I need some help from those of you who have wired a tape deck in an ea81 car. I got a tape deck that I want to put in but I have no idea how to do it. I took out my old radio and all the speakers (only one of the speakers worked anyways). Now what do I do? Are there any special tools I need for the install? I figure I'll need two new front speakers (what size?) and the two new back ones. I don't need anything that is super good sounding, I just want to be able to listen to some music while I drive. So can someone give me some step buy step instructions?
  9. I'm 6' 4.5" but only weigh 170 and I more or less fit in my 84 wagon. It I don't slouch a little my head will hit the ceiling but I just kinda got used to it
  10. I got back from Alaska in September and have been driving the roo since then, I just havn't been on the message board because the subies been running great. So I highly doubt the rotors went bad with me driving it every day. I just went out for a drive and I couldn't get it to make the sound anymore? I check the cv boots their fine, both axles are pretty new, replaced both since I got back.
  11. Thanks guys for all the ideas. Well I'm pretty sure its not the brakes I havn't done any brake work lately. I'll jack it up and see if I can find the noise like I said you can't hear it except when your coasting really slowly so it might be the brakes dragging slightly? Its a weird crunching noise noise that I wouldn't associate with disk brakes though. I checked both castle nuts and there nice and tight.
  12. Well I haven't been on this message board for about six months (I went up to Alaska for a summer job). I don't know if you guys remember but my username was EricJ321. Anyways I'm back now and I've got an interesting noise I was hoping someone could help me diagnose. Its an 84 ea-81 with the 4spd 4wd. The noise is tuff to describe but I'll do my best. It happens when your coming up to a stop the cars in neutral and your just barely rolling...if the stereo is turned off you can hear this noise it sounds like there is maybe some snow caught between the fender and the tire, a soft scrapping noise. Its related somehow to the wheel revolutions, the slower the car is moving the slower the noise is. I tried to figure out exactly where its coming from, it sounds like its coming from one of the wheels up front but I can't tell which side. Things I have done so far I drove around real slow in 1st gear to see if I could reproduce the sound and it doesn't do it. Tried rolling backwards real slow and I didn't hear it either. Looked under the car to see if the c.v. boots were torn or any other obvious problems. It doesn't make the noise when its in gear or any other time except when your just barely rolling, I want to ignore it but I also don't want to get stranded somewhere. Its got me stumped and I don't really want to tear into it since I have no idea what is wrong. If you guys have any quick or cheap things for me to check that would be a great help. My only idea I have is maybe its wheel bearings?( I really hope not though) Thanks.
