My Check Engine Light is on. I have a small OBDII scanner and it is telling me the catalytic converter is bad. A friend of mine told me that a Subaru dealer can reset the parameters the computer thinks is bad for the cat. Thus the CEL will not come on. Anyone know what I am talking about or had it done or know anything of it?

I have been wanting to give up the Outback for a Baja. Specifically a Baja with a 5spd and turbo. I was thinking about swapping in a 2.5 turbo. I am assuming it is a direct bolt up? But what about the ECU? just swap the turbo ecu in also?

The other day I decided to check my CEL because it had been on for a while. I wanted to check if anything else popped up. I found P0483 control fan rationality check malfunction. I did a search and learned some things. I checked my coolant and I added maybe a few cups to bring the overflow tank to "full". The car was running with the AC on and the fans would cycle on and off for 15 seconds. At this point the gauge was reading normal. I took the family on a nice long drive (80 degree heat) and the gauge read normal the entire time. When we returned I let the car idle in front of the house with the AC off as we unloaded. I noticed the fans were running for more than 15 seconds now. I got curious and looked inside only to find the gauge pegged in the red. The coolant level was normal and the car did not seem that hot. I again pulled the diagnostic out and there was no code for P0483. What gives?

I have done a search and read that a dose of Techron can possibly solve some of my problems. I will try it but my problem is a little more complex. Not only does my fuel light come on at any time (just after fuel up) but at any time my gauge can drop to below "E". A mile or so down the road the light will go off and the gauge come back up. The next day it will repeat the process. I was going to pull the sending unit to inspect for loose wires. Is this thing going bad, will the Techron help? Paul

When I bought my 2000 Outback wagon I noticed the rear sunroof shade was not functioning properly. You could not pull back the shade by hand with the sunroof closed. It would slide open with the sunroof but would make awful grinding noises as it opened. I also noticed water in the hatch area when it rained. I took down the headliner and investigated. The drains were functioning properly. With the roof open I could pour water into the channel and the water would flow down the drain tubes. With the sunroof closed, the water would leak inside the car and flow on the rail adjacent to the sunroof rain gutter. With the sunroof closed, I noticed a huge gap around the sides of the sunroof but and even bigger one the entire way across the rear. So big that from inside the car I can see daylight. I have since removed the sliding shade from the car as it was broken on one side. How hard is it to install a new seal around the sunroof? Can the sunroof be adjusted to close properly? I am thinking if I can install a new seal and adjust the sunroof to close properly I can get it to stop leaking. I now have duct tape around all the joints to stop the water. Help, I want my sunroof back. Thanks, Paul

I'm sure this is mostly a personal preference thing but I have to ask. I have Bridgestone Potenza tires on my 2000 Outback. I don't like them. When the road is the least bit wet I can feel the front end push/slide in corners. They have about 25% tread left but I am not happy. Are you happy with your tires? Tell me about it.

Around 150k. He just had the head gaskets done and a new catalytic converter. Recently had some bodywork done on the car but it is just now starting to bubble around the rear quarters. Car runs great. A Ford F-250 just backed into it. Headlights gone hood buckled and on fender crunched as well as minor damage to the radiator support. He is thinking they are going to total it. Anybody's feelings on getting the parts and piecing it back together? What is the typical buyback now 10%? I told him to wait it out until he know what the insurance company is going to do.

I plan on keeping this car a long time. Well, as long as I can make it last. I had my '91 for 12 years. Hopefully, this one will last that long. I should invest in a decent set of crappy rims and decent snow tires. I imagine my rims are at least 7" wide. Can I go with a little narrower rim so I can run a skinnier tire? What other Subaru rims would fit safely on my car?

I just bought a 2000 Legacy Outback Limited. I noticed it had a hydraulic clutch. This is the first one I have driven. The clutch just seems kind of odd to me. It engages/disengages near the end of the pedal travel (near the floor). I just bought the car and supposedly the car has a brand new clutch (less than 1,000 miles). Is this normal, and can you adjust the hydraulic clutch?

I had posted the car for sale here a week or so ago. Someone came and picked her up for $400. She had almost 262,000 miles and still ran like stink. I bought her in January of 1997 with 114,000 miles. Original motor was never apart. We went through alot together. I can't believe I let her go. It was like watching an old friend walk out the door not knowing when you would see them again.

That is what I figured I'd do. I bought a universal two-wire but I think it is not going to work. I will probably spend the cash and get the plug and play sensors. As a last resort I will spend the money on the new cat. For now I reset the CEL and filled up with decent fuel and put in an additive. I have driven it 4 times for about 50 miles and the light is still off.

That was the most informative explanation I have read. When the readings fall to a predetermined unacceptable level....."below threshhold" It all makes sense. I erased the code and put in some better fuel and an additive. I am sure that the CEL will come on again. I planned on two new o2 sensors with the new cat. So what is everyone's experiences with new cats? I see the OEM one from Subaru is around $900. I see others with both cats in one pipe as low as $250. Can I get away with a non-Subaru cat?
