My apologies about the double post, but here's the scoop on the Impreza I went to look at in Concord. It's got 141,000 miles and apparently no rust other than some bubbles on the driver's side rear quarterpanel where it meets the rear bumper. Pretty clean, '98 model. Has an exhaust leak. Wheel bearing howl. That I can deal with in good time if I buy it. Most important is the check engine light. It runs pretty nice overall but idles kind of rough. Seems a lot of these Imprezas have that light, where would be the first place to look to correct it? I have access to diagnostic equipment but don't want to get burned on this purchase if it's something serious. My friend's old 283,000 mile Impreza had it as well but didn't seem to cause any problems - but I care a little more about it.

I test drove a '99 Impreza at a Subaru dealer last night and had a conversation with the salesman about this - which reminds me that the salesmen at Subaru dealers are really nice at every one I visit. Basically I think that Subaru is doing so well because they simply make nice quality cars. The Impreza I test drove had 100,000 miles and drove like it was a new car. My friend had a '98 with 283,000 miles and it drove the same as well. They have sort of a cult status around here - every third or fourth car you see is some Legacy or Impreza.

They made the pistons taller in the 3/'97+ Imprezas, giving them like a five percent power increase and making them an interference engine. Two choices: '96 Impreza Wagon, 100,000 miles. Will need clutch within 10,000 miles "is high but not slipping", presumably will need a timing belt soon. $1000. 150 miles away. '98 Impreza Sedan, 145,000 miles. Good clutch, apparently needs nothing. $2,000 or "best offer".

Perhaps. I think it's something with the drivetrain because it only does it during acceleration or engine braking. It doesn't make any noise when you're doing a consistent highway speed. It drives fine otherwise, and I still kind of want to buy it because it's in great shape. I just need to know how bad of a fix this will be. That, and the heat sort of works. The fan switch does nothing, and there is heat kind of seeping out of the vents. I did not have a fuse puller so I couldn't check the fuses.

I went up and test drove a '91 Legacy AWD wagon, five speed. Guy wants $1,300. But, I have some issues with it. First of all, when you are giving it power, or doing any form of coasting down a hill (with the clutch engaged, of course), there is this ambient grinding noise that does not stop. That, and the heat does not seem to be working. Could be a fan motor or a resistor. What would you guess that grinding is?

I'm looking at a 1999 Subaru Impreza five speed on Craigslist - seems to be in good running order. It isn't pretty but apparently it runs and drives nice. New clutch. I won't be going to see it until Sunday but I was told by the seller that the heat only works on high, something about a resistor under the glovebox. How simple of a fix is this - and does anyone here have one I could buy

I have been looking for an EJ22 Impreza or Legacy for a while, but I found a 95k original mile Loyale wagon for sale. These have the EA motor with the spare tire under the hood right? Are these generally as reliable as the EJ22?

The motor is a Porche Boxter motor built to fit in a subaru." Just to let you know, unless you did some sort of motor swap, your WRX does not have a Porsche Boxter motor. I'll probably come off as a jackass but here's my two cents. The WRX has a "boxer" four cylinder, otherwise known as a flat four. The Porsche Boxter has a "boxer" motor as well, but it is a six cylinder. The motor in your WRX is either a 2.0 or a 2.5 flat four, while the Boxter can have a 2.5, 2.7 or 3.2 liter flat six, depending on the year. Other than the horizontal layout, your WRX motor has nothing to do with Porsche. Not meaning to sound like a jerk, just letting you know. Good luck with your sale. * Location: Lebanon * it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

If there's one thing I've learned about Craigslist, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. There is no way that offer is legit. I went to look at a BEAUTIFUL 1994 Legacy GT Wagon with 140k miles, and the guy said it needed nothing. Drove two hours, to find that the motor had a knock. Bad motor. Craigslist is a great resource, but the majority of offerings turn out to be sketchy.

Unfortunately I took the car for a test drive and it turned out to be a bit of a basket case. I know these motors very well, and it was making some strange noises. Groaning coming from the gearbox. Not going to bother - but will be getting some Subaru soon. I went right after to look at a 1994 Legacy GT Wagon with 140k miles, supposedly in "READY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!" condition. I had a bad feeling about it, but figured it was worth a shot. Car was beautiful inside and out, shame the motor had a knock.
