  1. My father had an old Ford Thunderbird shipped to New Hampshire from Colorado a few years back with DAS. They were pretty good and the car arrived with no problems.
  2. Nope, this was a stock '93 Legacy sedan (Beat to %(# I might add) with the original, beat to %#@ 2.2 motor. I had a feeling he was talking out his behind.
  3. I'm pretty familiar with Subaru 2.2 engines, I just had a dumb question to ask. There was this maroon '93 Subaru Legacy sedan I was always laughing at, because the kid painted the bottom half with BRIGHT blue latex house paint, put on "performance" wheels, a fart can muffler and a bunch of stupid "go fast" interior accessories like a carbon fiber-look shift knob. I was working on a 2.5 Legacy Outback in my class the other day and this kid comes up and start bragging to me about his rusted out pimpmobile. "Yeah, it has a DUAL OVERHEAD CAM 2.2 DUDE! IT'S MAD FAST YO!" Do any 2.2's have dual cams, and is it even possible to have overhead cams in a boxer layout?
  4. Easiest thing I can think of is to disconnect and remove your battery if you're that worried. You'll have to put it back in every morning but it's going to take about the same effort as doing the fuel pump wires, etc.
  5. How much extra would they charge you to replace, say, the water pump with the timing belt as opposed to just the belt? If it's much more, they're robbing you. The water pump takes an extra twenty minutes to replace, I did one on an Outback wagon and had it done in fifteen on my first ever water pump job.
  6. I have to agree with you, but for the sake of keeping things here about Subarus, I won't get started.
  7. Yes. So please pay up $1,000 for a new one. "I know, let's make something laced with platinum a required component!" Please don't take the above seriously.
  8. I was considering financing a used car at the local Subaru dealer, but the only one they had was an automatic. They recommended I lease a new, near-base model Impreza. They could get me a $150/month lease, which I could keep up with. Then I checked insurance. My clean record earns me a $537/month full coverage policy. Insurance is such a crook's business. They would take my $537 per month, and if I actually get into an accident, they will do everything in their power to not provide the service I'm paying for. If they do pay the damages, they will jack up my monthly payment so high that I will be paying it off, and then some, over the next several years.
  9. Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading somewhere that the STI is one of the most expensive-to-insure cars in the U.S.
  10. Yeah, you're right there. Non-interference is a huge plus for me. I can't seem to track down exactly why people dislike the car, I think it may have been on a more high-performance oriented forum where they disliked the newer, heavier design. Doesn't matter much to me, although I will be participating in a rallysprint event if I get a car before March 15th. Just like autocross but on dirt, no jumps or anything that can damage the car.
  11. How much are the ones for sale on your forums? And where are they located?
  12. Hey, Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty much out on this car because the guy never got back to me, so I won't need any more info on the SVX for the time being. Thank you.
  13. I did a VIN check and it comes up in the database as AWD, so it should be. For some reason the thought of me buying a FWD Subaru turns my stomach. Not sure why it bugs me so much, but it feels like an abomination for a '90 or newer Subaru to be FWD.
  14. Hey, Perhaps the biggest thing I remember people saying now was about the 2.5 head gasket problems. This one has the EJ22 so no problems with that. Well, if I get the information I need about the car, chances are I'll buy it.
  15. Hey, I'm sorry about asking so many general questions about different Subaru models. You guys are giving me a lot of help in finding a good Subaru to purchase. One Subaru I've been avoiding is the second generation Legacy. I don't know what it is about them, but it seems like people don't like them. I've got an opportunity to buy a '95 Subaru Legacy 2.2 with 165,000 miles. Apparently has no issues, five speed manual. I'm waiting to get more information on the car. But, what is with the general consensus that the '95+ Legacies are bad cars? I haven't seen it much here but a few other forums I'm on seem to dislike them. What's with the hate?
  16. Hello, I've been in the market for a used Subaru for quite some time now, and have an opportunity to buy a used SVX. Transmission was replaced recently, I guess. I've heard sometimes the transmission issue is actually just a solenoid or something, but that's the extent of my knowledge about the SVX. Could someone here give me some more information about how the car is, in general, to own and operate? Is it somewhat normal to maintain or is it a nightmare? What other problem areas do these cars have? This one, with a good transmission, seems to be a great deal for the price. Thanks in advance.
  17. This is a tough call. Either way I will be doing the work myself so labor costs are not an issue. I just need to figure out what I am dealing with here.
  18. I appreciate you saying this. What makes you think it needs an entire new transmission?
  19. So I'm giving myself tomorrow to decide on this car. As long as it can hold out for a few weeks before I can get into my class to fix, it should be fine. I'm debating about, given I can figure out the exact cause of the noise, getting a clutch kit and installing, or doing the mainshaft bearings and front seal on the transmission, or both since the transmission has to come out either way. He drove it across the country like that from Oregon and it seems they last a while like that, so it seems I might pick it up this weekend. I just wish I could determine whether it is the throwout bearing, mainshaft bearings or even a differential problem before I buy.
  20. I've got a tough decision to make. Rust free '90 Legacy Wagon AWD from Oregon. Runs and drives perfect. 180k miles on the body, 65k on a new motor and clutch. Clean title for it, as well as a folder with all records and repairs dating back to the mid 90's. Five speed, everything seems to work fine. I test drove it recently and was turned off by a grinding noise which I've asked about on here. Grinding on acceleration and engine braking. Coasting with the clutch in, no noise. So it isn't a CV joint issue. Current owner has driven it for quite a while like this, and it doesn't seem to affect the car's driving. My opinion and that of fellow member bratman18 is that it's the throwout bearing. I would just buy a whole clutch kit with everything for $250 and install it in my automotive class rather than pay Belknap Subaru $510. He's asking $1,100. What's your opinion on the car, fellow members? I don't want to jump into a nightmare.
  21. Well, the guy won't take less than $1200 for it which doesn't make it worth that on my part. I guess I'll pass. Thanks for the info.
  22. I went to look at a '91 Legacy wagon recently, but was turned off by a strange grinding noise. Here's the symptom. Whenever the clutch is engaged. From a standing stop, it makes a grinding noise that increases in pitch as the engine speed climbs. When you go to shift, it stops. Any type of engine breaking causes this as well. It's a rust free car in good condition otherwise, but I'm worried that this is a transmission/differential issue. He claims he's driven it like this forever but I need to know the problem before I buy. Anybody able to tell?
  23. They way you described the sound makes me think of the time my '94 Hyundai dropped a valve. Hope that isn't the case for you!
