  1. I know that you mentioned that the car has not had any electrical work under the dash done, but is the car possibly running an aftermarket Viper alarm that could be very well installed? I ask because I had something similar happen when I disconnected my battery while I installed my new alternator. By killing power to the Viper alarm (installed by previous owner) this caused the alarm to be faulted which causes the hazards to flash on and off for 30 seconds with a 3 minute break in between sets. This happens with the keys out and the ignition off. It turns out that I had to turn the ignition on and hold down the valet switch for 30 seconds to reset the alarm. :-\ Dean
  2. Checked the receipt today and it was 130.99 before tax. GD is right. Pricing depends on store location. Dean
  3. Like Allpar Mod mentioned before, the Rain-X latitude blades are great. When combined with the Rain-X washer fluid, it is unbeatable in keeping the windshield clear. Water sheds really easily and everytime you wash the window, the fluid adds the rain-x coating .
  4. I had mine go while i was up at my cousins house in Ohio during Thanksgiving. It was a Worldclass unit installed by the previous owner. The local Autozone had one for $135. So far so good.
  5. My 97 OBW has about 145,000. I'm not really sure as the speedo was replaced with one that says 83K by the original owner. Last carfax record stated it was 144K around the Nov 08. I bought it around mid April '09.
  6. That is the reason I joined. Im not much into hopping up the daily driver. Reliability trumps ultimate performance. That is why I build Street Rods. BTW, where can I get some lube for my muffler bearings? I don't think that the orginal owner ever lubed them......
  7. I got mine because my 1997 Hyundai Accent HB got totaled ( I was rear ended ). My budget to replace the car was $4K. $2K from my accent + 2K play money in the bank. Replacing the Accent with another one was out since I have a daughter on the way, so a bigger car was needed. My dad happend to see the '97 Outback on a dealer lot for $3700 and called me. I met him out there and looked it over and test drove it. 1 hour later it was mine. I have always liked Soobs but never had the cash. Mileage is ok considering I was used to getting 38mpg consistently from the Accent. Ride is awesome and it was setup with everything I wanted. That is my story. Dean
  8. One way to test the thermostat is to remove it from the car and place it into a pot of boiling water. It should open up when boiling and close when you remove it from the pot and place it in open air to cool. Remove it from the pot with tongs of course.
  9. Thanks Nipper. I also saw a thread concerning a d/r tranny swap. What does D/R stand for. I understand the OBW one.
  10. Is there any listing of acronym definitons for subarus? I did a search for some and did not find what I had hoped for. I have owned my Outback for a little over a week and while surfing the forum I get stumped on some of the terminology. When I was on a Ford Diesel forum, we would keep a sticky thread for the newbies to read for some of the common acronyms thrown around. Example would be HPOP which meant high pressure oil pump. Thanks. Dean
  11. Thanks! I have heard about the headgasket issue so I am keeping an eye on that.
  12. Hi Guys, Im Dean and I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L 5 speed . I bought it 2 weeks ago and love it. Some background about myself, I build mid 40s to early 50's hot rods, (current project is a 1949 Ford F1 pickup) and assorted electronic projects. I am not new to the forum scene as I have been a member of several ones in years past (ford trucks, hyundai and Harley Davidson). Most of my time wrenching on newer vehicles has been related to Ford 7.3L Superduty diesel truck and Harley Davidson Evolution engined motorcycles. I am interested in learning all about my 97 subie, so I will probably sit back and do a lot of reading and not much typing for now. If you know of some really good threads for newbies please let me know! Thanks for reading and look forward to seeing you all around! Dean
