What is my gearbox ratio?
EA82Turbo replied to EA82Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks So would the car be drivable with the wrong diff? -
Hi all I have a ea81T engine but I don't think the gearbox is standard. The gearbox is 5 speed with 2wd, 4wd hi and 4wd low. Currently I have a 3.9:1 diff on it but are not sure if it is the right diff? Would the car be drivable with the wrong diff? How would I test the gearbox ratio? Cheers

Thanks for the great info 'Do it sideways'! I think lock diff sounds like the one for poor people like me that can't afford a LSD At the moment I dont seem to have too much more traction than the 2wd boys. The roads around here that we race on pretty fast, mostly 90-140kph corners on lose dry gravel. Will a lock diff help me carry more speed thro these types of corners or create too much oversteer and slow me down?

I have a 3.7:1 diff sitting around but need 3.9:1 I think. Is changing the ratio difficult?

Hi ya all New Zealand rally car guy again. I am thinking of locking up the diff, an LSD would be better but I have no money. Would there be any advantage in having a lock diff over a normal diff in a gravel rally situation? Cheers Hayden

More torque from my ea81T
EA82Turbo replied to EA82Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the 3.70 hi/lo fulltime 4wd 5 spd with a selectable center diff lock sounds like a great idea! Is this an easy swap? It may fit onto engine housing but what about CVs, brakes, suspension? Q: "ALSO: what RPM do you reach ~8 psi, then where is the peak boost at, and do you have an aftermarket rising rate fuel pressure regulator, air/fuel ratio gauge?" A: At 8psi rpm dies at bout 5500. I Normally run 14-18psi and with the rev limiter off it will pull untill 6500. Unsure of fuel pressure regulator, no air/fuel ratio or fuel pressure gauge. Q: "sounds like a beast, I'm interested in some exhaust and engine bay pictures" A: I will get some pics, its horrible weather round here at the moment no good for taking pics. -

Thanks for that info. I will take some pics tonight and post them tomoro. Its not much to look at but goes good! I am wanting to replace the turbo with somthing newer. Am I best to get a subaru turbo again or any turbo? What should I look for to produce more pressure, quicker down low? -
More torque from my ea81T

I am unsure of many of the modifications done to the car as I have only owned it for about a year. I don't think it is an original motor, was told when I brought the car that it was originally a carby motor but unsure if that is true. 5 speed box is from an ea82, it is 4wd with lo and hi ratio. I live in New Zealand and are currently competing in the Mainland Rally series against wrx's, evo's, grs's, gtir's, gtx's. Check series info out at http://www.rallynz.org.nz. Of course these cars are a bit quicker than me but on a good day I can bet grs's, gtx's and on a really good day gtir's. Turbone, please explain "Its most likely the oil pump that needs to be resealed, which is quite easy and cheap", why oil pump? -
More torque from my ea81T

I could get some pics if you are interested. If I got a new cam, what would I get? This is an old engine now, parts are getting difficult to find. Or could I get one modified? Smaller exhaust would probably a good idea. More back pressure helps with torque, I think? -
Hello Everyone I have an ea81T in an 1982 Leone rally car. The car has enough power above 3500 rpm but when below it is shocking!!!! This causes problems in confidence for me when throwing the car into a side in 4th or 5th gear. Currently the engine has forged pistons, intercooler, oil cooler, fuel injection, 120psi fuel pump, 3" straight exhaust, new plugs, new leads, BOV, Cold air intake, 6000 rpm rev limiter(controllable). Current problems are loose tappets (spelling???), possibly too much fuel at low revs???, exhaust leaks, standard leone turbo running 14-18psi, No idea how to tune engine???, gearbox and rear diff i need on replacement. Anyone with any comments to help with low down torgue please let me know!!! Also I'm unsure if the cam is standard or how to test it. Without knowing the cam how can I set the tappet clearances? I'm not a mechanic so use everyday language cheers

Hello everyone. I have an 83 leone 1800cc turbo rally car and are having problems with blowing front outer CV joints. If anyone has any ideas way this could be happening please let me know. Cheers

Engine is a ea81 coz there are no cam belts on the front of the engine and im pretty sure it says EA81 on it. It does sound like alot of boost but seems to run it fine. It is in a rally car and has been competing with the same motor for over 10 years. When I got the car I was told the motor was a carburation edition modified to be fuel injected intercooled turbo but it may be a modified EA81T i'm not sure.

Cheers fellas, thanks for your help. Engine is actually a ea81 sorry, push rod edition . But should be the same right? Another question. The engine has had alot of internal work done by the last owner. When I got the car it was running around 18-22 lbs. That sounded like to much for me so I turned it down to around 14-16 lbs. Recently I crashed the car backwards into a bank, bugger! After some backjard panel work I am only been able to get around 7-10 lbs. Car feels slow!!! Any one got any good ideas. I'm thinking it could be the boost controller or the wastegate leaking? How would I check these things?

Hi. This is my first message post as part of the forum. I have an old carburated EA82 that has been turned into a fuel injected turbo. I did do the work so did ask anything too tricky. I recently had a problem with a leads and replaced the whole set with top gun leads. The problem is I didn't take note of which lead went to which cyclinder. Could someone please help with the firing order for this motor? Cheer Hayden (EA82 Turbo)
