  1. Hey. Registered in 1980. 1600dl sedan. Current warrent and reg. Will give a new warrent if and when sold. Here is a link for more pictures. Rebuild engine Replace CVJs and DOJs (all of them) New HT leads New Coil New points New condenser New Spark plugs Rebuild Carburetor Up grade seats (newer ones) New front right wheel bearing. Re-conditioned rack ends Back tyres are new, front have plenty of life left. Engine is totally reliable and with plenty of poke. Tested compression recently and all cylinders were at 160psi plus or minus 1 or 2 psi. This car has been all over the country with me and never missed a beat. I will be gutted to part company with her. Check out my other threads to see what else Iv'e been up to. With regards to my noisy n.o. 3 cylinder, since playing with the carb and adjusting the timing it has all but gone. I still have no idea what it is but I am not really worried about it either. She has passed her warrent of fittness with flying colurs the last couple of times. (although the bastards keep charging me for filling up the screen wash!)

  5. Check this out as an alternative http://www.freewebs.com/pertronix/ I would buy one myself but last I spoke to him the unit cost $300 odd dollars. The conversion explained above seems pretty straight forward and there are enough scrap EA81s to get the parts.

  7. Hey man, I think the problem you are going to have with that is you are going to drag oil and crap into the carb. This is why the pcv system needs to be set up correctly. It should allow a positive ventilation through the engine and re burn gases without drawing to hard and sucking up oil. Hence the complex setup of different diameter pipes. The setup you have now is much the same as mine (only smarter). The problem with this setup is as follows. 1. Gasses are not reburned and we are therefore damaging the environment. 2. There is no air flow through the crank case. This means mostly that any condesation in the crankcase will stay there and ************ up your oil. I can see this happening in my car. Over the summer the oil cap looks fine but in winter the cap and filler tube is caked in emulsified oil. 3. Catching any crap that comes out of these holes is a messy business. In my case I have ************ty soda cans that I replace now and then. In your case the filters will likely block up very quickly. If they block entirely you risk blowing an oil seal. My plan is to salvage an intact PCV system from a doner engine and retro fit it to my engine. I would think you could do the same and just hook it up to one carb. Cheers Dirk
  8. Have a look at your spark plugs. They are the window into your engine. Compare what you see to this: http://www.theultralightplace.com/sparkplugs.htm Should give you a good idea of whats going on. The last time I had an intermitent problem like that it was dirt/grit in the jets. Runs fine for a bit, then clogs then unclogs again. No amount of carb cleaner can fix that. If it is this then you have to remove and clean the jets. Not a bad idea to clean out the float bowel while your'e at it. Check main and idle jets. Good luck.

  11. Aye, I know that. The cans are just catching the crap that comes out of the hoses. The stock air filter box was always a bit gunky. Think I might salvage a PCV system from a wreck and bang in on.

  13. Sweet. Thanks. This is the system that my car came with. It appears to be far more simple than the systems being talked about here. I wonder what the draw backs are of this simpler system. Will it clog the carb?

  17. I think that is a fair price for a classic car. Yes, mine is also front wheel drive. If you are asking about wheel stud pattern, I'm not sure exactly but I know that it is unique to Subaru. I think some Peugeot wheels also fit.
  18. This is my 1979 sedan. A friend of mine has a couple of your model and year but in a very bad state. I'll take some pictures next time I see him. 1400cc? I guess then it is an EA63 engine (twin carb and dual exhaust ports on the heads) Looks a very tidy car. Interior looks good too. Seats still in one piece. You are right about parts being hard to find for this. You must have one of very few left out there. May I ask how much you paid for it?

  20. Ha ha. Let me put it this way: I am this 6th owner of this car and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only weekend mechanic to have had a go. The tell tale signs are all over. Which reminds me. I met a man at the fuel station before christmas who told me he used to own the car and he re-built the engine! That makes two of us!
  21. Sweet Thanks man. One more thing. Is it possible to calculate a compression ratio on an old engine that has had heads skimmed? I do not know how much was removed Oh yeah, The blocks were skimmed too.
  22. I think I'm starting to get it now. the difference between 9:1 and 9.5:1 is about half a milimeter on the piston length? Yes?
  23. Rick, I still don't get it. My pistons come up flush with the engine block. If they were taller, they would hit the head.
  24. Iv'e flicking around on the net and it looks as though MPFI pistons have indents in them. Is this a turbulence thing? As far as I can tell an indent in the piston is going to lower compression ratio. Is that why you would have to skim the heads?
