And it always steals the new ones. Never the old ones with holes in them. My wife and I both hate sorting socks. We have a big chest at the foot of our bed that we just throw them into. She has been known to wear an ankle sock on one foot and a wooly ski sock on the other.

I consider screwdrivers to be a consumable item. Even the good ones crap out in the end. Generally because they are one of the most abused tools in a garage. Plus people seem to have a habit of borrowing them and not giving them back. Speaking of losing stuff. Where do all the damn pencils and marker pens go?!
  3. Cable could be damaged or kinked somewhere. Maybe remove the cable, check it out degrease and relube. Also maybe try a sturdier spring on the throttle linkage. Last I had this problem I sprayed heaps of lube into the cable housing and removed a few coils from the spring. A bit agricultural but it worked.
  4. my figures say 6hp. Thats an extra 10% for me! I reckon thats worth the effort. Plus I'm stoked that the idea actually works! That was a 3700hp engine so they gained nearly 20%! Thats not bad.
  5. Sweet! Not so crazy after all!!
  6. This doesn't make sense to me. Either they both work or both do not.....? The theory you are suggesting is exactly the same mechanical setup. Not sure about the perpetual motion thing. The exhaust has energy. Its just not harnessed. (none of my comments are fact or based on knowledge. only speculation) The way I see it is this: Cool air and fuel enter the cylinder. This explodes and forces the piston down. Most of the energy is expended here but not all. What exits the cylinder is a hot expanding gas that still has its own energy. This is the part that is currently wasted. The question is: Is there enough energy left to convert back into a few hp?
  7. Einstein was a patent's clerk! And I'm just a wooden boatbuilder.
  8. I thought about the fixed drive aspect and wondered if some sort of rachet system could be used like on the hub of a push bike. Or maybe some sort of clutch system. My engine is 1600cc. At idle it does 900rpm so it would be breathing 720 litres per minute of air? Thats a lot of hot gas not being harnessed right now. The thing I like about this concept is that it is not adding power but recycling unused power.
  9. Not sure where to post this or if this is the right place to post but here goes: Turbo's and superchargers put a lot of extra strain on an engine and use more fuel but are a good way of extracting more power out of a smaller engine. At least this is my understanding. But what I was thinking was this: What if you were to rig up a super charger unit to work in reverse. In other words use the exhaust to drive the supercharger and put that exhaust energy back into the pully/crankshaft. Sort of a backwards turbo/supercharger Could this be a good way of recycling the exhaust energy with out adding extra strain to the engine? Genius? or Crackpot?
  10. Them is mighty big holes! What size engine was the weber set up for?
  11. What pressure should I be reading for an EA71?
  12. Can I use the heads from an EA81 on a EA71 block? The bore is the same on both blocks but I'm guessing the valves are bigger? Or is it the cams that differ?
  13. I have spoken to a pertronix dealer here who has what I need but he wants nearly $400 kiwi dollors for it! I think can can use a dizzy from a later EA71 but as yet have not found one. 200bhp! I'd be very happy just to get 80
  14. Cool idea! Its a 79 dl sedan. I'll keep a lookout for one. Where does the tack sender live?
  15. Ah Ha! So now we get to the dirty details. Doug, did you read my threads named 'knock or preigition' and 'my suspect wrist pin'? Your post about the worn piston got me thinking about my strange noises. As did the post about my bores. What did those people have to say about them? Is it possible to rebuild this block for the third time or should I be throwing it away? I do have access to oversize pistons and bearings etc. Great new avatar by the way!

Cool. Thanks to all for the sound advice. The best news is I already have a Mitutoyo digital caliper! Its in my parents garage in England. And guess where I'm headed for Christmas! Never really heard of Mitutoyo until now and i'm happy to hear its a reliable brand. I seem to remember buying them for about $25 so I think I did OK there. Mind you the guy I bought them off was certainly of the dubious nature.
  17. Sounds like its still not getting enough fuel. Have you fiddled with the idle mixture screw yet? If not, then try it. Anticlockwise will give you more fuel at idle. when the engine is warm set the trottle screw so that you have about 900rpm. Then turn the idle screw anticlockwise untill the rpm starts to drop, then wind it back in a little. Do you have a workshop manual?
  18. You bloody legend! This is just the kind of info I was looking for. Plus I finaly know the official max rpm. 6000! Right then. To the shops for a tach gauge. Thanks man! Dirk
  19. Holy Crap! Thats the most insane thing i've ever seen! Quite possibly the most beautiful too. The chasis is amazing but the body work is nothing short of a miracle. Thanks for sharing. Dirk.
  20. Bearing this in mind, I am surprised I can turn my engine over by hand at all. I know that my compression is equal and it must be reletively good since I only rebuilt it 2 years ago but with a 10" wrench on the crank shaft I can turn it over with reletive ease. What do you suppose the percentage of leak would be for a factory stock EA71? Or any standard road going car for that matter.
  21. Where do the leaks generally come from? Valves or piston rings?
  22. Is this what I should look for? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=256542104 What the hell is this?! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Performance/Carburation-induction/auction-257127206.htm
