There are a lot of tricks mainly short term; pulling the thermostat out so the water courses through the system very quickly; putting the heater on to suck heat out of the system. Make sure the fans are working properly. I'm surprised that excellent high tech remedies haven't developed with the expensive head gasket expenses.

It depends on how bad the leak is. You can pull the thermostat which will take pressure off and buy you time; also Blue Devil guarantees are good as gold, got my money back 4X! Fiberlock is not bad either, I think it was double your money back. Just make sure a coolant flush product is on the receipt and follow directions to a T. I've driven for many months on blown head gaskets.

I'd have him ask at Advance Auto, Auto Zone or Napa; they should be able to do the computer code for free and with all the Subarus there I'm sure there are good local shops probably on the outskirts of the city. I did business with a couple shops in Craftsbury and near St. Johnsbury as well as around Brattleboro.

Was at Monro earlier for a brake job at under $25, it makes sense plus they checked the brakes out. 97 Outback was making some rear metal noises, they checked it out and said it was bad rear brakes showing me the rear cylinders, trying to say they were metal on metal, which they weren't, and one of the calipers was no good. Estimate = $350. So I checked out this video on youtube: It made it look easy, only rotors can be a bear to get out without power tools or beefier ones than I have..... So I picked up the pads at Advance Auto for around $15 with the discounts and didn't have any real problems, got the brake tool kit for the piston at Auto Zone as a rental. A pretty easy job considering drums can be rougher. One of the caliper pistons was a little rusty, not sure if that becomes a problem down the road. I didn't see a tear in the rubber, not sure if that would be a huge issue if it was compromised.

How is someone going to know that the bubbles are CO unless they do the right test? It could be other things and there are some definite tests to find out how bad the problem has become and if it is a head gasket problem probably the heads will have to be checked and done too. Bubbles in coolant are not necessarily blown head gasket. I wonder how many head gasket jobs have been done before rigorous testing? Plus it is possible the job has already been done with some type of guarantee still outstanding. And on the stop leak products, yes they can be a waste of money and clog things up, etc., but didn't Subaru make a similar product? Probably not the Kevlar-based liquid (I heard) that one of the more popular products uses for good or bad. What I have heard from mechanics is sometimes the stop leak products work for a while; but I would also throw out a lot of cautions on it.

Since there are a lot of false diagnoses, even by mechanics, eliminating all the possible causes for overheating is vital. I have seen so much intimidating or heavy handed bad advice over the years on what can and cannot be done I could write a book about it. Many so called experts give bad advice. Those who really know Subarus as in a mechanic that works on them every day at a brick and mortar store can get to the bottom of a problem much faster than a chat forum. I have seen many experienced people on this and other forums say that a given job is easy when it is anything but.

I had one of these; actually a local Advance Auto had their ability to do check engine scans pulled after they were resetting the computer for customers; but the Auto Zone is still doing it. Info I got was that the guaranteed to pass product will help clean it out or Sea Foam; but like others said here a real diagnostic is indicated first; unfortunately I am loath to pay $100 for one of those around here so will try to apply what is said here.

Heck, if I had any competence in mechanics, I would fix it up and sell it. I'm around Norwalk a friend in Old Lyme would let me work on it there, but I am not qualified, I would have a basketcase. Maybe a film company could use it in a scene where it gets to be part of a demolition mayhem scene, or drive it over a cliff; I'm not sure if they use Subarus for that though.
