  1. I have a catalytic converter code in a 1997 Outback limited; I was wondering whether the guaranteed to pass product was successful, as several people recommended that. I pulled the battery cables to reset the computer with the check engine light on.
  2. I picked up a can of Bondo a while ago; I haven't gotten up the gumption to try using it to fix some holes in my car's body. Can anyone recommended youtube tutorials on this? I heard panel replacement has become standard now by professionals. Too expensive IMO.
  3. There are a lot of tricks mainly short term; pulling the thermostat out so the water courses through the system very quickly; putting the heater on to suck heat out of the system. Make sure the fans are working properly. I'm surprised that excellent high tech remedies haven't developed with the expensive head gasket expenses.
  4. It depends on how bad the leak is. You can pull the thermostat which will take pressure off and buy you time; also Blue Devil guarantees are good as gold, got my money back 4X! Fiberlock is not bad either, I think it was double your money back. Just make sure a coolant flush product is on the receipt and follow directions to a T. I've driven for many months on blown head gaskets.
  5. Question--does re-torquing the heads ever address mechanical issues like leaks in the head gaskets?
  6. I put in a couple front knuckles from the junk yard at $75 each that fit the bill with out breaking the bank. Not sure if rear used bearing make as much sense. If the hubs were at all damaged even the best bearings can have a short life.
  7. E-brake works fine; I had one of those self destruct on my other Subaru and I lived without it when the broken metal pieces were removed.
  8. I'd have him ask at Advance Auto, Auto Zone or Napa; they should be able to do the computer code for free and with all the Subarus there I'm sure there are good local shops probably on the outskirts of the city. I did business with a couple shops in Craftsbury and near St. Johnsbury as well as around Brattleboro.
  9. Did they ever get a class action for all the head gasket failures of the 2.5 engines?? They sure deserved it. I was speaking with a Jewish gentleman yesterday who said he would never buy a Japanese vehicle due to how they treated the US POWs in WWII.
  10. Was at Monro earlier for a brake job at under $25, it makes sense plus they checked the brakes out. 97 Outback was making some rear metal noises, they checked it out and said it was bad rear brakes showing me the rear cylinders, trying to say they were metal on metal, which they weren't, and one of the calipers was no good. Estimate = $350. So I checked out this video on youtube: It made it look easy, only rotors can be a bear to get out without power tools or beefier ones than I have..... So I picked up the pads at Advance Auto for around $15 with the discounts and didn't have any real problems, got the brake tool kit for the piston at Auto Zone as a rental. A pretty easy job considering drums can be rougher. One of the caliper pistons was a little rusty, not sure if that becomes a problem down the road. I didn't see a tear in the rubber, not sure if that would be a huge issue if it was compromised.
  11. OK, thanks, it was the reset button connected to the remote lock/unlock system which I do not use.
  12. I'm still trying to figure out the remedy to this problem of the lights that flash every couple seconds after removing the battery cable. On the loosening of the battery clamps, many people do not have a 10 mm etc. wrench handy, so solutions without one should be suggested.
  13. I've been trying to rectify this problem; the lights flash every few seconds after I removed the battery cables and re-installed them. Is the remedy to tighten the cable bolts? Also why is it so hard to work those clamps with pliers??
  14. How is someone going to know that the bubbles are CO unless they do the right test? It could be other things and there are some definite tests to find out how bad the problem has become and if it is a head gasket problem probably the heads will have to be checked and done too. Bubbles in coolant are not necessarily blown head gasket. I wonder how many head gasket jobs have been done before rigorous testing? Plus it is possible the job has already been done with some type of guarantee still outstanding. And on the stop leak products, yes they can be a waste of money and clog things up, etc., but didn't Subaru make a similar product? Probably not the Kevlar-based liquid (I heard) that one of the more popular products uses for good or bad. What I have heard from mechanics is sometimes the stop leak products work for a while; but I would also throw out a lot of cautions on it.
  15. Since there are a lot of false diagnoses, even by mechanics, eliminating all the possible causes for overheating is vital. I have seen so much intimidating or heavy handed bad advice over the years on what can and cannot be done I could write a book about it. Many so called experts give bad advice. Those who really know Subarus as in a mechanic that works on them every day at a brick and mortar store can get to the bottom of a problem much faster than a chat forum. I have seen many experienced people on this and other forums say that a given job is easy when it is anything but.
  16. I'd try to get it properly diagnosed. After using a bunch of head gasket repair in a bottle products, I flushed out the coolant system with white wine vinegar, got a gallon at the market for a few bucks and then flushed it with water after running it for a while.
  17. I did find them kicking on finally. So they are working. The last owner gave me a set of old ones, I don't know why.
  18. Excellent points; a clogged radiator as well as other cooling dysfunctions can cause the problem as can the head gasket. Mechanics are quick to jump to the blown head gasket diagnostic as the percentage of them going is very high. Good luck and read the many threads on overheating.
  19. On a recently purchased 97 Outback, the fans are not kicking on. How important is for them to run?
  20. I had one of these; actually a local Advance Auto had their ability to do check engine scans pulled after they were resetting the computer for customers; but the Auto Zone is still doing it. Info I got was that the guaranteed to pass product will help clean it out or Sea Foam; but like others said here a real diagnostic is indicated first; unfortunately I am loath to pay $100 for one of those around here so will try to apply what is said here.
  21. Heck, if I had any competence in mechanics, I would fix it up and sell it. I'm around Norwalk a friend in Old Lyme would let me work on it there, but I am not qualified, I would have a basketcase. Maybe a film company could use it in a scene where it gets to be part of a demolition mayhem scene, or drive it over a cliff; I'm not sure if they use Subarus for that though.
  22. Is this unique to the 4 wheel drive Subarus, or does every other one have the same issue? And does that fuse in the front to turn the vehicle into a 2 wheel drive car ever work for that?
  23. Actually it has EJ22 engine, hard to know if head gaskets would make it whole, but probably would be good for 50K plus more. It is driveable for 20 plus miles or so, slow leak. I listed it at $595 OBO.
