  1. Just some anecdotal evidence regarding siping;

On my 84 GL i had some brand new BFG ATs siped at discount tire (several years ago) and it did make a pretty big difference when driving on ice, or polished snow. But they totally did fall apart faster. All the edges at the sipes became beveled, and after a while i noticed chunks missing all over the place, and the snow performance wasnt as good as when they were new.

    Just throwin that out there.

Hankook I pike is by far my favorite snow tire. I especially like how well they handle heavy rain and slush

  2. Id throw it together and run it. (After oiling, fresh this and that etc)

My 84 had sat for 8 years before i bought it. I didnt do anything but replace fuel system parts, oil and plugs, rotor, cap, etc. and she's still running well. Even passed emissions with no cat and a weber!

So get it running, and see how it does. Thats pretty low mileage on what is probably a decent motor.

  3. If you have access to compressed air, thats your best bet for blowing any residual water out of the cylinders.

Pretty much what these guys said....squirt some oil in the cylinders (once the water is out) change the crankcase oil and filter. When test firing, just use water. Then if it blows it all out or you have to drain it, its not a big deal.

I wouldnt worry about head gaskets....with only 155k on the clock, she's just getting broke in!

How did the gaskets look just below the carburetor? Thats the spot i wouldve first suspected.

  4. I know i got the picture of this car from this site, but its been a while and i cant remember who it belonged to.

I ask because i think its stance and proportions are pretty much how i would like my 84 to sit, and so i have a couple of build questions for the owner. post-25891-0-38191100-1414985719_thumb.jpg

  5. Oh and ive been tinkering with rehabilitating my poor dashboard since its out. Used a cheese-grater looking body file to getbthe horrendous high spots out that were around each crack, sanded it all out, and used caulking to fill 'em in. Sanded again then skimmed on another coat of caulking (it shrinks a bit). Not done yet, need to sand it out one more time, then top coat it. (With what, i havent decided)

  6. I did the belt, idlers, and water pump in my baja a couple weekends ago. The belt looked totally fine! Not a flaw on it. But two of the idlers were ready to be changed. They felt a bit rough, had a little bit of wobble, and spun very easily.

For the crank bolt, i was expecting trouble (after reading some of the stuff on here). But no, it was fine. Used a 2 foot long, 1/2" drive ratchet with a 7/8 socket, and a crowbar held against (2) 1/2" bolts through the damper/pulley...piece o' cake.

Thought id just throw that out there.

  7. My baja's been doing this lately too. I was kinda afraid that maybe the catalyst was breaking down and coming loose, though to my ear it sounds like a heat shield (have an s10 blazer that sounded nearly the same, right before the catalyst self destructed). Im gonna try the hose clamp trick first. If that fails, ill drill some holes, blunt the ends of some sheetmetal screws, then run them through the shielding, against the cat to create a tension. (Less surface area for heat to migrate through)

    P.s.

Some of y'all are pretty smart fellers! hyuck hyuck

  8. Wish i saw this post sooner. I did the same thing you did. The heater core didn't work from rock auto. After i sent some pictures they accepted it and gave me my money back but i was out on the shipping charges.

I have bought to from the local part store (o'reilly's) and they have lined up and worked great.

    I wish you did, too!

I checked every parts house around here...except o'reilly. Their counter monkeys dont know sh1t from shinola. (The one local to me anyways)

  9. Hey Jonas,

What year is your brat? Just curious cuz....

Rockauto sent me the wrong one! It looks to be fine quality, but the pipes attached to the core are way, way too long, pointed in the wrong direction, and the core isnt nearly as thick as the stock one.

So to sum up, Pro heater cores appear to be good, but rockauto sucks balls and im never ordering from them again. Ive used them 5 times....and only twice did i get what i actually wanted.

  10. Why sure!post-25891-0-53906300-1413848949_thumb.jpgpost-25891-0-63898400-1413848971_thumb.jpg

Just took these pics, and comparing them to your photos, it doesnt look like mine stick quite as far.

Theyre 14s from a little isuzu pickup. They stick out far enough that i had to take 3" from the front fenders, and 1.5" from the rear.

  11. I guess i'll get it, as it seems to be the only one available. Local parts houses around here dont even list it as available.

I was debating throwin the old one back in (its all taken apart for rodent related cleaning, not cuz of a failure) since its built like a tank with no corrosion evident.

    Thanks!

I still find it funny that anecdotal evidence from people i have never met, makes me feel better about a purchase like this. :)
