  1. OK. Still trying to figure out hose hoses on my intake of my 87 GL AWD Wagon with the freakin Hitachi carb. I can't find an FSM to purchase or download.. the diagrams I find on here are either broken image links or of the vacuum hoses with the air cleaner off. First off, I know I can remove most of this stuff, and probably will, but right now I just want to get it back the way it was to avoid more problems... I cannot find out what the guy circled in red is... there was only one hose attached when I got it: My problems now are the 3 big hoses on the right side of the air cleaner (shown with black arrows, I know great color choice ). I've gotten different responses and of course I have a "before" photo with the hose, but can't figure out which one goes where... I think one might just stay open:
  2. Thanks a lot Tom! Going to go try and get it sorta out in an hour or so when it get light... many thanks!
  3. I have an 87 gl wagon with an hitachi carb... Just replaced the intake gaskets and having trouble relocating the two large hoses off the driver's side of the air cleaner... Still can't locate a FSM with the hitachi carb section and my diagram under the hood doesn't clarify these... I am reconnecting the air cleaner (still. Ant find an ea82 fsm for the carb models) and I have this hose left: I know it comes off of one of the two large pipes on the air cleaner (top of photo). Right now the one shown here is going to the driver side head. It might be switched off the wrong port at the air cleaner, but I can't find where the other stupid port is? Any out there can help before I lose light? :/ thanks!
  4. Really old post revival :/ but do any FSM's for an Hitachi carb'd 1987 GL still exist in electronic form? Thanks!
  5. True but the good thing is its always summer here (Florida)... bad thing is there is very little Subaru enthusiasts/salvage parts! An engine swap is sooo tempting!
  6. Oh not good! :/ Got her new tires and took her on the maiden voyage... then she died. (posted some of the problems in another thread with photos and video) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=121691 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=121777 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=121810 She ran great and a noise developed. I jumped her and got her back. The next day I found coolant in the intake I've drained the oil (no coolant in there, no noticeable metal shavings) but I think I've spun a bearing. I took off the intake, cleaned things up, and new intake gaskets. Going to check the oil pump, redo timing, put in fresh coolant and oil, and give her a quick start. I'm fearing that the noise will still be there but hoping I get lucky. I always wanted to rebuild an engine, but wasn't hoping to so soon! Should have a few parts here tomorrow and hoping to get to restart her by Friday night or Sunday morning! Thanks for checking with me! I'm learning a lot but still have a lot to learn lol
  7. Little sucker was plugged shut, as was the small hose from the steel pipe behind the intake that comes through to the front of it... 5/32" coolant hose is not easy to come by. Guess manufacturers got smart about using such small lines prone to getting plugged.
  8. So far I have only been able to find an 89 FSM but it has some diagrams and info on the SPFI and MPFI turbos... Hope they can be of some use. 9. Sorry got overwhelmed with hoses .. Figured it out, goes to the top of the engine! Duh!
  10. 87 gl wagon awd auto carb I found a rusted/clogged fitting below my thermostat housing on my intake as I'm trying to clean it and replace all hoses. I didn't label it so I think it was previously disconnected. Can anyone recognize this (the rusted end off the bottom of the housing in the pic) and let me know where it should connect? Many thanks!
  11. Wow great writeup and work Numbchux and the other contributors! I'm a visually person and it was just what I needed to see. My car is ready for the swap, but until I find a complete donor car I don't think I'll risk it yet. Electrical is my thing, its the engine stuff that scares me LOL Definitely subscribed here, and thanks again! I know writeups like this take time and are a labor of love!
  12. Thank you Bennie, and I hope you're right too! I guess I will just reassemble it after I clean it up and replace the hoses, and make sure everything is coolant free, clean, and passages clear... then see what happens! Thanks GD, after all the reading on here I know a used engine is a smart option, or a conversion. I actually really wanted to do the EJ conversion like Bennie recommended above and I know many have done. Salvage yards like back in the day just don't exist in this area anymore, and older Subaru's must not have been marketed in this area much, I never see them. :/ Thanks Quidam, well like I said I looked very hard at the drained oil this time and I had to look very hard to see some tiny, almost dust-sized shiny metal. I am not sure if I spun bearing would be more obvious than that or not. Yes, I had drained out a lot of fluid from the oil pan when I first picked up the car. And the previous owner had admitted she might have put some water into the oil opening my mistake a few times. :S Yes only about 76k... it ran nicely at first... Someone else mentioned that there was still moisture built up inside from all the sitting. I guess I should have drained/cleaned it more, or did more oil changes. But the oil I drained yesterday did not look abnormal, albeit possibly a bit thinner than normal. I'll check out that site... I wouldn't mind an SPFI EA82, or preferably, an EJ22 conversion. I've been researching enough here and elsewhere to know that GD's words are true. I never need this to be fast. I am planning it just for fun and a bit of word to haul tools and building materials for projects.
  13. 1987 GL Wagon AWD, auto, EA82, hitachi carb If I find a way to pull my engine and check to see if I spun a bearing, does that mean I will have to go oversized or just replace with the standard size? I know this is a totally dumb question. But I may have a friend willing to help and this would be my first time pulling an engine. Thanks a bunch. (Shopping options are standard, or 0.010" oversized)
  14. Sorry DJ... that sucked and I wish you well. My wagon is currently dead and really causing my headaches and has me stumped, but I'm not faced with the DD issue. Good luck. I love Seafoam and use it my cars and motorcycle... but I do find it may not cause problems but definitely can bring preexisting stuff to the forefront :/ We just ran some through my friends old Porsche 928 he bought and now he's having fuel delivery problems... I'm sure we dislodged something. Good luck getting everything straightened out, glad you have a place to work on it at least.
  15. Hey guys, about 28 connections, an alternator, and an AC compressor later my intake is off! What a mess and conundrum of rubber hoses.. I don't like the condition of the gaskets, but I'm wondering what my best way is to try an identify the problem, primarily if the engine is toast. I drained the oil and did not see any signs of metal. Intake out: Passenger side (dry): Driver side: coolant Any help would be really appreciated
  16. Thanks Miles... I just picked up my felpro gaskets, they are graphite colored but just paper as I feared. The parts guy was knowledgeable and a Datsun mechanic from back in the day. He watched the video with the noise it was making and said it sounds like I spun a bearing :/ this sucks apparently that means the engine is toast unless I decided to rebuild it Gasket felpro PN MS22764
  17. '87 Subaru GL Wagon - 4WD - Auto - Hitachi Carb Didn't have to dig as deep as I thought to find the newest problem... went to pull the air cleaner and timing belts to check out the oil pump... I was presented with a mess of coolant / milkshake in the intake. I'm going to pick up some felpro intake gaskets today only because they are in stock. (I'll switch to OEM ones later) Wondering how the Felpro's are? and whether I should coat them with anytype of permatex or anything since they probably won't be a durable as the oem's? Other than a thorough cleaning, and an oil change... anything else I should do or run through the engine (assuming its not wrecked) a bit to up clean everything out? I'll clean the carb as good as I can. I'm hoping I didn't break the engine. It sounds terrible, but I only drove it less than a 1/4 mile to get it home and the engine never did overheat or anything... it still idles fine now too.
  18. Well went to pull the air cleaner and timing belts to check out the oil pump... I was presented with a mess of coolant / milkshake in the intake. (Pictures below) 1 Are new intake gaskets my next step? 2 Is there a chance the engine is salvageable? 3 Would this account for the terrible sound in any way and possible oil pressure loss?
  19. Thanks for the help and feedback heartless! Since I just found coolant in the air cleaner box, i think my noise is more than heat shields! :-\ Hoping its just new intake gaskets, without other damage... time will tell... gonna update my other thread and see if I get some more advice there.... thanks again too!
  20. I appreciate it Crazyeights... I guess my next question is what should I do to determine this? I do remember saying to myself the oil pressure gauge was reading lower than normal. The "At oil temp" light was on, but obviously they all were. If I start to systematically disassemble the engine, how far do I go and what should I look for? Damn I wish there was more of a Subaru gang here in Florida, I can buy beer and pizza!
  21. Thanks again... I use them a lot for my other car and the subaru. But I need to find the OEM part #'s for things like head gaskets I don't want to use non-oem on them if I have to go that route.
  22. Thanks Rugby... I found that helped... but I'm running into a road block with more serious problems now I fear... trying to figure this out, but i did finally get her to idle and drive great for about 4 miles! Luckily I don't have cold to deal with here. I appreciate the information.
  23. Guys I'm getting really aggravated and mad at this car. I don't think I have the means in my current location to swap the engine, or even really pull it. My guess is at least the head gaskets need changing. I read this can be done without removing the engine? If so I know I need to buy subaru gaskets. I'm trying to locate the part #'s to have a local dealer order me a set in case I find its just the gaskets and not cracked/warped heads.. My question is are there any online subaru places that actually list the 87 GL so i can look up the right part #'s for the stuff I'll need? All the sites I find only list the 1987 XT, Justy, and Brat.
  24. I'm really impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness on this forum. I've been enjoying trying to bring my Soobie back to life and hit a roadblock, hopefully temporary! Doesn't seem to be many Subarus or enthusiasts down here in South Florida... Wondering if any other Floridians frequent USMB?
