  1. I am getting steam in the crank case. i havechanged the head gaskets twice now and still same. any advice or experience with this prblem?
  2. I got to drive a 22b once (on gran turismo 4) chuckle chuckle!!
  3. If there was ever a dream sports car that is it. I would love to see some pics or vids.
  4. Thats some good snow foottage. I like it for a while but then it gets cold and wet. I am a desert rat. Anything below 40 and I turn into a wimp.:-\ I do get to go to MT charleston and snowplay sometimes in the brat.
  5. Type of wrenchig: Shadetree, Awning, Garage, sidewalk or wherever i might seem to breakdown. What: mostly classic chevys but have been forced to downsize, hence the Subaru in my veins. How long: since I was old enough to grab a steering wheel. My dad and uncles were all mechanics though my dad left when i was small and i never saw my uncles I guess it was in my blood to figure things out. Plus growing up in small towns you either fix it yourself or walk.zzz. I built a dune buggy out of a honda shadow V-twin using an old 3wheeler rear end and a wrecked banshee front end. built a frame around it all. looks like mad max. four speed, never get it out of 3rd because it scares me. Other Skills: Welding, body Work, Paint work, and Chef.
  6. Those seats look just like the ones in my brat so they must be from soob. as for the blower if its anything like mine you can get to it by removing the dashboard. just be careful of the wiring, the cluster and spedo cable. there is a book online that you can google and probably download. i learned about it here. It is called How to keep your subaru alive. it has worked wonders for me as I mostly worked on classic chevs and other thirsy v8s. I was recently forced to park my 62 chevy truck and drive a smaller vehicle due to gas prices. I figured that if I am to drive something small I was going to find an old corolla, datsun 510 or hopefully my favorite, a 78 brat. fortunately there was one for sale here in vegas at the time I went shopping. Now I have subaru in my blood and it is sweet.
  7. I have that same carb. I removed the butterfly choke valve on the secondary to get more airflow andit still starts fine in the morning. of course I live in the desert and it gets 30 degrees as the coldest. so it may affect in colder climates. I took the old hedder of my 62 chevy truck and used the elbows to weld an intake for a k/n type filter. each barrel has its own tube feeding it air. these join into a bigger tube which receives a tubular filter. I can feel the rush when I accelerate.
  8. I was going home one day and I lost control of shifting ability. I though one of the linkage bolts came out. Not that lucky. The shift selector broke in half inside the tranny. I took it apart and pulled it out. it had failed on the o-ring groove. none of the machine shops wanted anything to do with it unless I wanted to spend alot of dough. I ended up tapping the split surfaces, inserting a grade 8 all thread and tightening it as much as possible. I then welded the groove with my old ratty wire flux core wire feed and re grinded an o-ring groove. I had to fill the old likage holes and re drill new ones. That worked out for the better as i dont have to reach in my unsuspecting passenger's lap anymore when shifting into reverse. I put it back together, said a prayer, wished upon a star and said ten hail marys. It has held for over a year now and hope it keeps holding until I can find a decent ea81 5-speed combo to rebuild.
  9. If you get steel 6 lugs you can drill two holes on the wheels. if you want to go alluminum you will have to drill the other four holes in the rotors.
  10. I use deisel fuel, a tough paint brush and a bucket.
  11. I have a 78 brat. last year i heard a rattle as i left a stop light. I checked it out and the plastic fan had melted off the bolts on the pully because the bearings goyt so hot. I have always hated manual fans so i wanted to install electric. The first step wes getting the pulley removed. If you have or can obtane a cut off saw replace the blade wth a metal cutting blade. It is tricky and dangerouse but you can get it off by holding the part with vise grips and wearing a face shield. now yo have the bracket with no pully, great, ire-install it. the adjustment pully must be lifted about 3/4 inch to get a belt to on small enough to fit it. this can be done with a spacer or some thick washers. find the belt at the parts store to fit. now the alternator is installed. I bought the $60 fan at autozone and it fit neatly into the shroud of the secondary fan. the secondary works fine without a shroud. ( i live in Vegas so I would be the first to overheat if id did not). get a relay and wire the fan to the battery so it has full power and the relay to the automatic choke wire as it only comes on when the engine is running. the only downfall is the older models have a low tolerance to additional electrical components so just make sure you keep a well serviced and quality battery in your vehicle.
  12. which side of the gasket faces the bock? the separated rings or the joined cylinder rings? Anybody?
