  1. I am looking at an orphan plug in the wiring harness for the left hand side of the surround for the instrument cluster. There is a blank (space that could be popped out) on the dash front close to it. Would that be where a switch for factory fog lamps might be?
  2. Do EA82's with oil pressure gauges also have an oil light?
  3. I am finding the Auto trans on the EA82 is pretty rare. I am trying to snag a governor, but the only trannys on the web seem to be 5 speeds. I guess the autos gave up the ghost pretty early on and the cars went to the crusher. Sad.
  4. My avatar only represents the first Subaru I owned.
  5. Is there one shop that stands out for overhauling a hitachi carb worth sending mine away to? Oh, and don't get cheeky and tell me Mr. Weber!
  6. When I was into the 1st Generation Toyota Celicas, some guys had redone door panels, but they didn't look that great. You end up stitching them with very thin upholstery foam and then gluing with upholstery cement to the door card.
  7. I've tried installing it at the proper position and moving it 1 tooth ahead (advanced) but the ignition is still too retarded there. I am setting it about 30 degrees ahead in order for it to start and run smoothly. I thought the plug wires were all off by 1 position, but that's not the case either.
  8. I've followed all the instructions in the How to Keep Your Subaru Alive and the Haynes manual and the Miles Fox videos, and a number of years of previous Subaru experience, but if I time it per the instructions it won't begin to fire off. Time it beyond the marks and it runs very well and had lots of power and re-starts well. Cold starting is troublesome but I think that is a choke related issue. Every critical pulley has a pin or key to ensure it can only go one way, so I don't see how I could have gotten them out of time, and I never removed the cams from their carriers, so I don't think I got left and right cams mixed up.
  9. This has me baffled. I changed the timing belts and the cam indicators were set correctly before and after installation (12'oclock on the valve cover seam, one rotation of the crank and then 12 o'clock on the other) with the center valve timing hash mark. I tried setting the ignition timing to 0 and #1 TDC and then installing the distributor with it pointing at the brake booster. No start. Set it at 8 deg, no start, The only way it will start is to set the timing on the flexplate attachment bolt beyond the 20 degree mark. It starts and runs pretty well (especially once warmed up). What gives?? 1985 GL EA81 1.8 SOHC,Carb, Auto (for now) and AC.
  10. Welll, I rebuilt the governor for the fourth time and it could not possibly move any smoother, yet it won't auto upshift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, unless you tromp it and then at about 4500 RPM it will upshift for a moment and then back into 2nd. You can manually shift it from 1st to 2nd and it downshifts automatically from 2nd to 1st. So, I am taking a much needed break from this project to regroup and reassess. I found a 5 speed locally, but I would need a step-by-step guide to tackle something like that, AND it would have to make sure there was no need to eliminate the emissions controls since they have that money maker down here in Phoenix. Orignally the problem was a broken timing belt, but I went the full monty on gaskets and oil/waterpump, etc in order to build my daughter her first car that could be as reliable as my previous Subarus have been.
  11. I've had it apart and together a few times and each time it gets worse. I'm headed to the junkyards today. What year Subarus had the 3AT from which to try and get a replacement governor? Any other makes use this tranny (it is FWD only, not 4WD)?
  12. How about honing the bore a little to make sure there are no burrs?
  13. Does anyone overhaul these governors? Has anyone bought one from the dealer NOS? Edited to delete whining
  14. And you were right, the D light was a burnt out bulb.
  15. Found a break in the circuit board and after fixing it, she works great. Now onto the abysmally poor performance!
  16. I get an ECS light on the dash. At least that works! Is there a ground common to the cruise control, radio, and dash gauges*? Or maybe there was a major electrical zap sometime in it's past that fried everything. *Fuel gauge appears to work as it reads full when it's full, but haven't driven it enough to know if it fails to the "Full" indication.
  17. She shifts! Now we're down to one shiftless thing around the house! I fully disassembled the governor and polished the bores with XXX steel wool and cleaned it again and reassembled. Thanks to whomever posted the disassembled governor, that was really helpful. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
  18. Will a failed electric fan end up doing more than $150 damage and headache? The electric fan relies on the power source, the switch and the fan motor. The clutch relies on a viscous coupling and a belt. Most of the time, I have found that the fan clutches fail due to sitting too long. If you use them reguarly they seem to work pretty well.
  19. I cleaned it with carb cleaner thinking I might find some goo in there, but it was clean and everything moved very easily. The cover for the governor only had a very small amount of fluid in it. I was expecting it to be full for some reason. What about band adjustment? I see very little about how or why it is done.
  20. Valve cleaned and replaced (gear looks very good) and no luck. Actually trans will not shift out of 1st automatically. 2nd can be manually selected. When moving if Drive selected ( manually out of 1st or 2nd) very little engagement occurs acts like it is slipping. No slipping at all in 1st or 2nd. Is there a chance there is a vacuum line that is incorrectly connected? What does the vacuum line do for the trans? Could a blocked filter cause this? How about a torque converter that is improperly seated?
  21. It will not shift up from 2nd to 3rd, though it did shift up from 1st to second ok. The D light was working 2 days ago when I took it for a test drive and it shifted through all the gears OK. Does the tranny have a Vehicle Speed Sensor to sense a shift, or is it just a pressure thing? It will manually shift from second to first and back. I'll try adding fluid and see if that helps. The only fluid loss was the transmission cooler in the radiator and the torque converter when I pulled the engine.
  22. The Drive indicator does not light up and the tranny won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. Where should I start? 85 GL 1.8 Carb, A/T w/ AC.
