  1. Thanks for the input, guys. Will consider transplant as an option, as the rust is serious enough now that the car isn't safe. Yeah, soon's I get the digital cam working (yet another thing to tinker with), I'll post some pics of just how ugly it looks under there. Shame, really, 'cause it was a real blast to drive. Mantra: 'But the engine still runs!' LOL!
  2. Hmmm... could be a scam. Then again, could be legit. From your original post: "This person is going to pay me 1500.00 in a m/o" If by m/o you mean an international money order, then it's likely not a scam. Take the money order to any bank and exchange it for cash. On the other hand, if it's a cheque (yeah, I'm Canadian), then you may be up against a scam. As for Subarus being rare up here, yeah, they're definitely not as common as down south. Combination of a number of things, not the least of which is a harsh climate, small population base, and limited model availability. I used to run a 1987 4wd Hatch out of Vancouver, BC - had to drag the local Volvo/Subaru dealer out to the lot to convince him that it was a D/R; he kept insisting that no such beast had ever been made. Should'a seen the look on his face! LOL! --wd
  3. Bought it last fall and brought it up from CT; had a great ride up here, turned out to be a real adventure. Have decided to name it 'Rusty', for reasons that will be familiar to all NE old-schoolers. Weather and work conspired to keep me from getting a good look at the undercarriage back in the fall. Wasn't able to do much but dream over the winter, and run the engine a few times to keep things going. Now that it's gotten warm enough and the snow has gone, I've finally had a chance to get under it in daylight to poke and prod and get a really good look at the rust. Not looking good. Serious sag in the frame, particulary where a frame-stiffener was bolted to the rails. Was hoping the problem was limited to floorpan holes, but it looks to be worse than I thought. Gonna have some serious figuring to see if it can be saved. Mulling some ideas, but wouldn't mind some input from the board. If it weren't for the fact that it's a convertible, this one would should have ended up in a boneyard a few years ago by the looks of things. So, any suggestions? :-\ On the plus side, the ticket I got the night I parked it was thrown out of court last month. --wd
  4. Well, the favourite would be the 87 GL Hatch with on-demand 4x4. 'Cept that it needs enough work to be a project sitting in the woods up to it's axles in mud at the moment. Which makes the contender the 2000 Impreza Outback Sport. Still toying with the idea of resurecting the old 'BaruGL, but waiting on the funds. Needs a new carb, clutch, battery, and quite a bit of body work (rust in the quarterpanels, replacement fenders and a door skin, etc.). Still, for a car that cost me less than 1k$ used in 1996, I sure got my use out of it. Took me from Vancouver to Ottawa, and chalked up at least 200k in the eight years on the road. And for a pockmarked (hail storm) beige beast, who knew she could top out at 153kph. Still credit the golfball-like dimples for the extra aerodynamics <G>. And now I find I'm drooling over other people's Brats. I guess Soobs are like peanuts - ya just can't stop at one... --wd
