  1. When I accelerate after a tight turn, I hear something like a tin lid being hit with something in the passenger side. Also sometimes during a rough road. What is the easiest way to replace and cost? Should I change the whole axle assembly?
  2. I got the engine idling back to normal buy adjusting it more. It sits around 1100 which is okay with me for the time being. Like I mentioned earlier, I will be EJ swapping before too long, so I can be patient. Thanks for the tips.
  3. Great write up. I was hunting the other night for some tips and didn't find anything useful. I will give this a try. I am not too worried as I am about 20% on my way to funding a EJ swap. If I wasn't, I would be doing the Weber swap.
  4. My ea81 is having idling issues pretty bad. I kick the throttle to let it fast idle to warm up, but all of a sudden, it doesn't idle properly. I adjusted the idle screw to a nice rpm and then go on my way and after awhile of driving, i stop at a light and it idles down to nothing and stalls. I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. I have adjusted the idle screw about 4 times now and it seems like it should be racing. What should I be looking for? The last thing I can recall doing was filling up at Chevron. That's all I ever used in this car.
  5. I called Grant. They just looked at a computer apparently and said its discontinued. Also further reading, the part 6596 that is for the ea81 is for the 5 bolt signature series wheels, I bought the Challenger wheel that has 3 bolts. So any thoughts on what I can do?
  6. I am working on a contribution to the USMB that will allow users to upload images and return a url to paste into posts. I have a few hosting sites now, but will get ticked if I start serving a bunch of images all of a sudden. I will post a thread when I have this up. In the mean time. you can use facebook. just have to copy the "download" link and paste it in. but be sure to remove the ?dl=1.
  7. I have an 83 GL. I can see a faded out "Cruise Control" label on the turn signal arm so that confirms my suspicion. I will have to try and trace the wire and see where it goes? anyone have wiring diagrams of these older subarus or should I hunt e-bay for some dealer manuals?
  8. GD - you are the master. Thanks for the cable help - to all who has followed along, it was the cable for one and two, the cable was routed over instead of under. Drove it home with no issues. Mark is sucker fixed.
  9. It seems the previous previous owner (last owner was an older lady) did something with the wiring. I have "hot wire" from the batter except the clock. The lights turn off with the ignition. That means I have no constant power to my stereo and have to change settings every time it starts.
  10. Is there any cruise control controls on the left turn signal arm? if not, what is the push button and adjustable ring at the end?
  11. I was a moron and accidently tossed the owners manual I had in the glove compartment for my 83 GL. I don't even know how it works to test it! There is a button and twist ring on the end of the turn signal arm. CC and A/C are two things That I would love to have working.
  12. WTF! lol. Jegs charged my $60 and didn't even bother to tell me it was backordered and discontinued. If they can't work something out when I call Monday, I will have them refund me and give Summit a call. $47.95 from them.
  13. GD - Well I would love to save some cash. Let me give you a call tomorrow around 1130 or noon. My soob is up in Salmon Creek, thats about 29mi to your place. You would arrange a normal tow truck or trailer? I would love to have the oportunity to know this subaru inside and out. So let's hash some details tomorrow. Where would you recommend to get a clutch kit. People tell me to avoid Cost Less Auto parts here in the 'Couve, but I honestly never had problems with any of their parts when I had my 4Runner.
  14. Thanks for the offer GD! I tried driving it home from my buddies shop and I can't get it into any gear without slamming it. I don't want to ruin my transmission. I don't know anyone with a trailer either or who would roll down I-5 towing me. lol. Clutch Doctors quoted my $416 and they guarantee the clutch kit for life and 20,000 mi labor warranty. So I will bite the bullet there.
  15. I will call them Monday and let anyone know. Right now, my soob is on a trailer waiting to get the clutch replaced. I don't have any place to do it myself so a to a shop I go.
  16. Well, it's the clutch. So question is there anyone in the Vancouver / Portland area that has a place to help change it or pay to change it?
  17. I noticed you are in Vancouver. Is that Washington or B.C.? I am in Washington.

I'm referring to your post about the tranny swap. I am feeling the pain with a 4-speed and would like a 5-speed. Did you attempt the swap yet? I would love any tips or any difficulty involved.

  18. Well I got shut down by my apartment complex for working on my subie in the parking space So it's at a buddy's shop getting worked on. I'll trade him something for the work. Website or something he might need. I'm having do the belts at the same time. I assume my trouble is just the cable. The clutch would slip if it was worn out, and my gears grind in every gear, HARD, so it has to be the cable stretching right?
  19. Ferox - Do you like the Grant over the stock wheel? I find the stock wheel too big. I had this same wheel in my old 4Runner and was awesome. I ordered mine through Jegs. They told me to call tomorrow and they will get on the phone with Grant to figure something out. Hope they do.
  20. Mine is an 83 and ordered a Grant wheel and adapter from Jegs. they then tell me the adapter is discontinued. They say they have one for a Legacy and Justy. Would the splines match and just be a matter of distance? Anyone have thoughts on this?
  21. ha! I have actually done that the first time out. I haven't had experiance with a 4spd and it seemed good to go into fourth gear, but rumbled so bad with the pedal to the floor. I reserved the last clutch cable at my local parts store I am 'bout to go pick up. Thanks for the input all.
  22. GD - That was my fear adjusting it so much. Tell me if I am wrong, but I was told long ago that if you can make your tires chirp from a dead stop, your clutch is still good. I can chirp the tires pretty well.
  23. when I first picked up my 83 GL 2 weeks ago, the first 5 days of driving was fine (although you had to grind the pedal to the floor to shift smoothly). I then took it to get the differentials serviced (Mine is a DR 4WD 4 speed) and from there, shifting got worse over the past 10 days till finally I had to shove it into first gear, grind into 2nd and 3rd then a pop into 4th. So before I stormed off Jiffy Lube, I checked the adjustment on the clutch cable and tighten it up. World of difference! That same day I adjusted the clutch, I was heading up to a lake to ride wave runners with a buddy. Along the way the clutch seemed to revert back to it's original state. There were alot of curves and hills. The next day, I checked the adjustment and it was in the same spot, so I tighten it more and bam! smooth shifting again. So my question is the clutch cable stretching out some how? Does the hill stopper have anything to do with this? Or could I way off base to the real problem here?
