  1. Thanks for all the replies so far. Might consider a delaership (have a few SubaruBucks to use), but was looking for an independent mechanic. Looks like I need to replace the front axles, both boots torn for a while now. 84FF, yes he PM'd when I asked years ago on this forum about a local, but I forgot his name and lost the PM. Maybe he will see this. Not looking for a hand out either, just want an honest and knowledgeable mechanic.
  2. As the title states, anyone know a good Suby Mechanic in the Philly area. Thanks in advance.
  3. Original owner of a 1996 Legacy GT Sedan with 116,500 miles on original HG and no signs of any issues with the HG.
  4. I have had this happen several times on my soob. Open the brake fluid reservoir and check the top of the lid to see if the rubber bladder is pushed out. If so, just push it back in.
  5. Thanks for the reply. Got under it today, boot is torn. Thanks again. John
  6. Need some advice, appears I am having the problems explained in this old thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=37894&highlight=crunching Had the clunk coming from the drivers front end, now it is a crunching sound. Can't do this myself. How much should this cost to fix, is this something any mechanic can do or should I seek out one that works mostly on Subaru's and is the car safe to drive? Thanks in advance John
  7. Resurrecting this old thread as I picked up that Cen-Tech OBD II Code Reader yesterday from Harbor Freight. It is on sale right now for $39.99 and I used a 15% off coupon. Don't have a code to read at the moment on the Ru, but it links with the ECU to tell me "no codes" so it appears to work. I also used it to read and clear codes from my Dad's Dodge Caravan.
  8. This has happened to me since owning my 96GT, but I never noticed that it is due to a low tank, it seems to me that the pump nozzle has to be pushed as far into the filler tube as possible to avoid it shutting off.
  9. Original owner of a 1996 Legacy GT with the infamous 2.5L, have close to 110,000 miles now with the only non-wear item I have replaced is the knock sensor. Still original head gasket and wheel bearings. Timing belt was done at 60k by dealer (before I knew it was due at 105K).
  10. JPX, Did you ever resolve this knock? This sounds exactly like what I have had for at least 2 years and 18k miles now with my 96 2.5L. Thanks John
  11. Yes, actually the molding goes all around the bottom of the car. Must only be on the GT's then. Here is a good pic from an Ebay auction for a 98GT that shows the molding, click on pic to enlarge:
  12. Ouch! You got me there. Mine has been VERY reliable for 10+ years.
  13. Yeah, I'm sure Philly has a few. Just never been to any, guess I'll have to make a few calls this weekend. The price for a new one is outrageous and can't see spending that for a 10+ year old car.
  14. Looks like someone stole my passenger side rocker molding the other day, it was loose in the back, but has been that way for months. Anyone have any cheap replacement recommendations?
  15. No problem, easy to remember when you have one (96GT). Also remember being a little upset that they did away with the premium fuel recommendation with the 97MY. With the price of gas, I have been using non-premium fuel on occasion, only downside I notice so far is a slight decrease in mileage.
  16. Do a search here for "torque bind", should give you plenty to read. The easiest thing to check first would be to see if your tires are all inflated to proper spec and have similar tread depth. This happened recently to me, but it was on a right hand turn, had a slow leak in one of the tires, good luck.
  17. It is really a nasty day here in Philly, windy and raining, but I must say the Traction T/A's really impressed me today. Highway driving in high wind gusts and wet roads, the car seemed to track better and feel more surefooted than with the Dunlops. As far as my MPG's, I don't keep a log, but usually try to save a few receipts and check my MPG's before tossing them. Last 2 fillups I got 21.06 and 21.30 MPG. I usually get around 22 in mixed driving, a little lower in the winter, so things appear to be normal.
  18. Happy Phase 1 owner here (original owner), will be 10 years old in Feb, recently hit 100k, has been a VERY reliable car. I was a little worried when I recently noticed the coolant level going down, but was just a small leak in the upper hose, no HG or overheating problems here. My GF has had more problems with her 04 Forester in a little over a year of ownership than I have had in 10.
  19. I just put on the BFG's a few weeks ago, so far I like them. Only filled up once since, I'll try to report back. They seem to be a tad noisier than the Dunlop Sport A2's they replaced. The Dunlops had a few bad reviews at Tirerack, but they wore really well for me, almost 4 years, 33,000 miles and still had 4/32's left. Had to replace em all due to an unrepairable leak on one.
