Quick!! Am I insane?
Good idea kiddo! I did that whenever possible and after speaking to one previous owner, he offered me a set of 4 Michelin snow tires mounted on the rims for $100. !!! Can't beat that with a stick! Now, it's a (state?) law here that the dealer MUST disclose the name and address of the previous owner, but ONLY if asked... true there? Consignment... he has nothing to lose but space and time. Does he offer a limited warranty at least? If not, blow him off, that can get sticky because he probably has no liability as far as lemon laws are concerned, any such liability will probably come back on you. hmmm.

Quick!! Am I insane?
If I needed a car other than the Subarus I have, it would be another Mazda. I really loved that car for long trips. I could drive for hours on end with no body fatigue whatsoever. Peppy, but great on gas and everything on the dash was placed within perfect reach. Nice car.

Liking the New Gen Car Already

He insists it would have been fine without the water. He brazed one on the car before, so I'm sure he would have been fine, being the "King of Junkers" in his youth. Fix it, or walk 15 or so miles to wherever he needed to get BTW, did I mention that with some of the stunts he's pulled off that he has to have nine lives AND an angel on his shoulder? Me? Belt and suspenders all the way baby! I also stood by, armed with a fire extinguisher, like it would help in an explosion! Der!

Bed Liner Removal Success! *Pic* of the result
When I called the Rhinoliner installer in my area, they wanted $600 to do the BRAT, the guy mumbled something about the seat mounts getting in the way. The Duplicolor was a quick fix for a really bad primer job in my '78. The '86 had it in it already, I think it may be Duraliner that roll-on stuff, it has a different texture. It's cracking and peeling all over too. Even though I haul stuff in the '86 and it's my daily driver, I'm going back to paint and carpet. I'm in the salt belt and it's easier to catch any rust early on.

There's no way to keep it from cracking, splitting and lifting, dirt and water get under it and starts rusting... it always looks like crap because you can't keep it clean. My '86 has several spots starting. Bad stuff. We have severe temperature changes here, (100+ degrees in the sun to -15 degrees <wind chill>) so that could be why it's been a problem. Oh, I should probably say, this isn't Rhinoliner or any of the commercially applied spray-ons, it's Duplicolor or other brand sold for DIY consumer use.

http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/photos2/showgallery.php?cat=1030 The bedliner is out and repainted! She's sporting new decals from Ed Dahl with the word Subaru added. To restore the 4WD and Subaru on the mudflaps, I scanned them and drew the lettering on the computer and had vinyl cut. They cut both positive an negative images in case the vinyl doesn't hold up, the negative can be used as a mask and it can be painted on. I also got very nice trim and black interior door panels, armrests and locks from that junker Skip in NH has. There are still some waves in the door and hood sheet metal, but I remember that my original one had the same issues from the factory. It took a month of hard work, but it was worth it. Now the work starts on the engine bay. I had the signature turquoise paint mixed to redo the air breather. I was so pleased with the result, the '86 is getting the bedliner stripped very soon. The bedliner is lifting and harboring rust so it needs to go...

Connie... sit back... now BREATHE! In, out... you know the drill. It'll be fine kiddo. These cars cost money we don't have. What does a branny new shiny '07 cost... WAY more, with no where the glamor I decided to call the '78 Woodstock after the Peanuts character. For now it's Woodstock... drives a little wanky... can't always stay on course... Tim still hates it, but fiercely protects it. Weird parallel to Snoopy and Woodstock... funny Woodstock is yellow too! I LOVE Peanuts... inspirational characters to live by... but that's an off topic thread. So... no giving up... ya' hear! YOU were the one badgering the most when I had all this BS! 'member missy? I took it to heart and have what I think is a great car Thanks for that Connie. Have to edit: I can't even help with your mechanical problems... hard as I've tried to learn, I STILL have no clue how the wheels on the bus go round and round. I can change parts, but don't know why. Sad.

Unfortunately, not everyone that works over at eBay are experts in every field. They pretty much rely on the general public to report threats to buyers. And they DO take it seriously! I have reported several ads that were sheer scams to eBay over the years and am glad for it... BGD's claiming that the part was painted and looking at the picture is bloody obvious and needs no intervention on anyone's part. Buyer beware. The ads I talk about were downright scary... no matter where you clicked, you got the seller's email. I have to say, he probably "sold" that car a few times over... if he even owns it, to sell. Again, buyer beware. As a side note: eBay pulled the auctions within 2 minutes of my reports... they are serious and diligent in their quest for safe transactions. Please click "Live Help" and report anything you think isn't legit. No, I don't work for eBay... but I do love it!

That seems to make some sense, especially if it's warm and slightly humid... it's bringing the two a bit closer. hmmmm... I may try that when I paint my air breathers. I had them put the "eye" on the clean part Hope it matches as well as the car. BTW, hit up a cruise night for old cars in your town... the attendees can usually point you to any car restoration service (paint, upholstery chroming), that you won't find in the "Yellow Book". The best ones don't need to advertise.

I'm pretty lucky, I have a local supplier that matches color pretty good, I brought my tailgate in and he put the "eye" on it... it came up with a blend of 2 different make/model years and it matched almost perfect. From everything I have read, you can't compound/buff metallics because it will roll the flake? If you can't find a local supplier, there are a bunch on-line that will mix spray cans for under $25. plus shipping.

Sorry to say, it will never blend with the old paint exactly, the metallic flake probably won't match either.

Fuel Tank Capacity: A Sanity Check

We took an 800+ round trip. I did notice that I drove 100 or so miles before the needle moved, then it dropped to three-quarters in one swoop. That's pretty much what my older models did. I figured Subaru would have improved that on the newer ones. Guess not. My mileage varied drastically on the way there because of the hill climbing and construction slow-downs. The descending return trip took one full tank of gas at a constant 75-80 mph with a/c on. The car is an '05 Baja 5 sp. turbo.

Need Some Opinions
Hey kiddo, you have a warm, dry garage... tuck him in. He's a cool car... I really have to say that... in ernest. In time, the other cars will probably make the decision... mine did, after 1 year of every concept of conversion/repair. The '84 is getting stripped for parts to save my '86 Breaks my heart that I have to sacrifice one for the other, but life will go on.

No subaru's back east?
I just did a 1500 mile round trip to the Corning, NY area... I saw 3 Bajas and countless Foresters, Outbacks, Legacies and WRX/STIs. What really got me was that I saw an old red Justy 3 times while I was in Addison. I also saw many, many, many older Loyales and Legacy wagons in the Lawrenceville, PA area. BTW, why don't cars stop for pedestrians in PA? When I did stop for them, they kept looking back at me like I was going to pick them off in the street!

Oh yeah. Bright yellow paint IN FACT adds maaaaybe 10 hp. Red BRAT decals IN FACT add another 10 hp. Correctly matched and balanced tires will add a couple. Good gas and a new, properly adjusted carb will add a few. Fixing stuff... making things right... 65-72 mph... 136 mi. round trip. No voo doo... well, except the yellow paint... he makes me giggle with his elaborate descriptions and fantasies

82 Brat Noob, many ?'s
Welcome to the board tacotim! Never, ever apply new paint of any sort without neutralizing/eliminating the rust completely, it WILL bite you in the butt in short order. Next, I would spend the extra money to go to your local auto paint supply place or online and have actual auto paint (even black) mixed for the application <bumper, trim, metal> in a spray can. Krylon, Rustoleum and others will oxidize in a short period of time. The most important thing is to treat any rust and make sure everything is CLEAN and CLEAR of wax, fingerprints and water before you spray any paint. Bedliner... DON'T do it. You can't keep it clean, it WILL peel and look like total crap in less than a year. I thought it a good solution, I spent forever stripping mine back off. Trust me on this one. Check my gallery. I got a quote from Rhinoliner, $600. the guy remembered the BRAT nad the seat rails. It would probably hold up, but the spray-on and roll-on stuff you do yourself is bogus, I've tried both and repainted the bed to original. Silver leaf and metallic paint pens are great for fixing badges. You can find these at WalMart or Michael's Craft shops. They hold up well to NE weather. Best of luck getting her back to looking good

No subaru's back east?
Mostly newer Outbacks and Foresters here, I swear it's pretty much every other car. I see quite a few Tribecas and 3 or 4 Bajas in the area. There are only 3 older Gen running around that I see often. An old guy from across town is still driving his 80 something gold wagon that he's had since new. I did notice the last time I saw him, that the car is showing its vunerability to the rust. It's in remarkable condition for a daily driver, he's quite a man-about-town so he's always headed somewhere.

You're lucky to have your own business that survives on your own talents. Unfortunately, most of the kids here are just coming up and don't have that advantage and have to work for someone else. The people hiring now are still anti-ink and it's my guess, for the next 10 years or so, will be still be anti-ink, at least if it shows to the public. In the corporate world, I even see tons of empty earring holes... let alone ink showing. As these individuals retire, then maybe a more tolerant group will emerge... if you want to wait. Just remember, the ones taking their place didn't tatt where it could be seen during working hours. Catch-22.

Old Gen logo, true to the stars
Please... you younger guys especially. Choose wisely where you put your tattoo. Nothing below the elbow or above the collar. You never want to be chained to wear long sleeve shirts and turtle necks. You never know what you may be doing in the future. I have seen many qualified kiddos lose great jobs, that they really wanted, all because of a silly tattoo that shows (even below the cuff of a long sleeved shirt. BTW, on the logo business, I could be way off base, but I think they left out one star on purpose to imply that the car itself is the brightest star. Did you notice that the USMB logo has all 7?
