Okay, thanks.

Uhh, not good!
Yeah I prolly didn't need to do all of this, but I'm glad I did. The filter was very, very dirty. Lucky for me the whole process has gone well. The pan seal seems to be doing well, just wished that stupid o-ring would've seated. And while I'm whining, I very much dislike the position of the tranny/diff. dipsticks. Oh well, should've known better than to buy an A/T.

Uhh, not good!
I'm checking it at idle in park with warm oil. So I drained about 4.5 qts then. O.k. cool. Still have the noise though, so I'm going to take the pan off again tomorrow and check that stupid o-ring. Hopefully that is the problem. The P.O. said it was shifting hard and used some lucas to soften the shifting. Then, when I took the pan off yesterday, I noticed that the magnet was completely covered with metal, there was metal in the pan, and the filter didn't look as if it had ever been changed before. The tranny will crap on me some day, but I want to squeeze every ounce outta this one first. So for future referance, where does a guy buy another transmition for this thing? The number is something like : 463836957W7645896

The bolts holding the filter in tightened by hand, one would think these would be slightly off if the o-ring was not seated correctly. Or am I mistaken?

Uhh, not good!
So, after removing 3.5 qts from my original 7.5, the dipstick now reads approx. 3qts. low (assuming each hole is a qt.?)It now reads @the low/cold mark. I'm thinking maybe the o-ring did not seat right? That sucks!

Will do. Thanks everyone.

Uhh, not good!
No, I had to remove the pan to get to the filter.

Idk how much came out with the pan. Prolly bout 4 quarts, but a bunch came out with the filter, and the tube that runs across the filter. Who knows how much came out of the TC. I drove it to the parts store with 4qts in and it made the same noise. The dipstick read low with only 4qts.

Uhh, not good!
I filled it through the dipstick with the yellow handle on the driver's side next to the firewall. I am talking about a '98 outback legacy with a 2.5.

Uhh, not good!
So, I changed the tranny filter in my '98 outback. Now it is making a weird noise, almost like a vaccum/hydro leak? I don't really know how to explain it. What could cause this? -Low fluid -Too much fluid -Tranny got used to the contaminents Can't tell how much fluid is in there. The POS dipstick is not reliable, reads high then low. I used about 7.5qts.

Finally!
Yes. The motor has 50k on it. Little worried about the auto tranny. He said it was shifting hard, so he put some lucas oil in it, and it smoothed right out. I don't know what a new one shifts like, but the tranny does seem weaker on the shift than a TH-400!

Finally!
Looking for more of a tough, on/off road tire. A/T's this small?
-
Finally!
Proud owner of a '98 Outback. 146k in the car, and due to an unfortunate event with a forgotten oil drain plug, 50k on the engine. The tires on it are junk! What are some treads I should look @ for these tiny 15" wheels? Big and beefy w/out a lift?

Sounds good. Voodoo and Magic is for sure. Too lazy to swap in a standard though!

What years/models of trans works?

Tranny sales
I got a hot lead on a '92 legacy wagon. It has 165k mi. and the auto trans. is bad. Where do I get one of these, and how much do I pay for it? Also, the head gasket/timing/water pump has not been done yet(to the guy's knowledge), how long can I expect to run before doing these things?

'91 Subaru Loyale
Seems to be slim pickings in the Rockies right now. I'm looking for a work car that is able to take a couple of trips home to Missouri, go fishing in the mountains, grouse hunting, and camping. My FSJ's are built to the hilt, but the AMC 360's get about 10mpg. My budget is $4k. Am I looking @ the right vehicle for many needs?

'91 Subaru Loyale
What is considered " low miles"? Fair condition books out @ $1700?

'91 Subaru Loyale
Good call. I was thinking around $1000. People around here tend to think that whatever "blue book" says, that's what they'll get.

'91 Subaru Loyale
This isn't a "tech" question, but I didn't see a place for general questions. I'm looking at getting my first subaru. Is $2200/obo right for a '91 loyale/156k mi./good shape? Seems high to me.
