  1. Took the 97 obs in to less schuab i guess the junk yard sold me a bad hub, got my 93 out of the ditch today, two days and they smashed the passenger side rear window out with a rock in the middle of know were and stole my camelback, tow rope, and come along could have been worse out here you leave something for a week and it will be striped to the frame lucky for me though nothing of great value was in the car for them to steal. i will be glad when i get out walla walla and back to western washington 5 years and im still waiting to recieve any of the so called country hospitality.
  2. Alright me and a friend are working on his 97 obs, hit a curb last winter with the passenger rear tire now it wobbles badly. we replaced the half-shaft the drum and hub assembly one of the swing arms and the rim this weekend and it still wobbles just as bad. so i am running out of ideas can worn bushings or struts cause the a wobble that is visible by an observer and looks to be the same rpm as the tire is turning at i am running out of patience its been a rough week and where down to one car because Saturday i got my 93 impreza is stuck in a muddy ditch and it wont be comming out till it drys out but thats another story. so any ideas about what might be wrong with the 97 would be appreciated. P.S. My apologys for the rant im sort of angry at myself for getting my car stuck and putting my self in this situation.
  3. My friend has a 2000 civic that i am trying to fix. The Civic had a coolant hose i replaced then took it for a test drive and the temperature spiked and the engine stopped a wouldn't turn over again it acted like it was seized and then about 15 minutes later it started again. I got frustrated with it so i let it sit for two months and today when i went to start it the car started but made a terrible squeaking noise that got intermittently worse and the engine would slow, after about 15 seconds the engine quit all together and wouldn't turn over. Oil looks good and i pulled the spark plugs cam cover and timing belt cover and everything looks good. Any ideas what it might be or could anyone point out a good Honda forum for such questions. i have little experience with Hondas having only owned Subaru's myself.
  4. Thanks for the tips. My existing tires dig through the snow pretty well but i end up getting high centered quite often so im looking for a taller tire with more ground clearance. current tires 185 65 14's all season
  5. I have a 93 impreza and im looking at getting some 205 70 15 snow tires for it this winter and wondering if they will fit. Whats the biggest tire anyone here has run on a stock first gen impreza wagon?
  6. Sounds like a headgasket, there isnt any oil running through your intake gaskets so their is no way they are the problem. my car did the same thing when i blew a headgasket if you look at your dipstick you should see a milkshake on the dipstick and it will probably be well above the full line. this sort of headgasket is internal and all the coolant you add to your radiator is ending up in your crankcase. the coolant oil blend is most likely coming from you pcv tubes that run from your valve covers up to you trottle body boot then it goes into your trottle body and airfilter box.
  7. I was just looking at my 93 impreza wagon the other day and noticed that the rear seat has caps covering up holes for headrests, the back of the seat even has the latch mechanism like the front seats do for adjusting the headrest height. The holes on the rear seat are a little farther apart than the front seat headrests so those dont fit. Does any one know what cars subaru actually put rear headrests on from that age, did the impreza sedans or coupes have the rear seat headrest. I just thought it was strange that the back seats have all the hardware to accept rear headrests but i have never seen an impreza that has them.
  8. I was wondering how difficult is it to get a reinstated title in washington. I have a friend who will buy it from me if it can be made street legal.
  9. it radiats alot of heat it looks like it has some sort of shield but there is a hole in it for welding a third pipe onto the top of the cat that my car doesnt use grease can fall into the hole and burn.
  10. there was a small diference in the inboard axeles cup on the new one it fit though. the alighnment has been bad ever since i have had the thing it pulls to the right. im not sure why but this time the insurance company branded the car
  11. Fortunately the whole car did not burn during the process I was trying to put it out with the water in my camel back but ran out, fortunately a guy stopped and poured water from a water cooler jug on it to put it out. The new cat has a heat shield except the heat shield has a hole in the middle for a pipe to be welded to which my car doesn’t have so grease can fall in the hole. The car is no longer road worthy due to getting in an accident the week before when a guy in a Toyota Tacoma pulled out in front of me from a side road as I was driving down the free way at 60 I was only able to slow down to about 20 or so before I hit him, his insurance is giving me a decent amount of money for it though 890 bucks but they totaled it to have a salvage title. Right now it drives but I will probably be parting it out soon if towing to a junk yard isn’t to expensive after I have parted it all out.
  12. I was wondering how the the ej18 imprezza the 90-94 legacy compare to each other preformance wise. I am looking to replace my 82 gl with more reliable and quicker transportation.
  13. how do i lean out the mixture on my hitachi 2 barrel carb there doesnt apear to be an idle mixture screw only a idle speed adjustment screw the milealge has been pretty poor.
  14. it was on the passanger side but the cat was just replaced last month The old axle i got from napa last year the new axle was from schucks only becuase i was stranded and they where the only place near by. i do not feel the car is safe or road worthy any more and i am just looking to something more reliable i cannot have my car catching on fire.
  15. Never heard of this happening before but my axle broke on me this last weekend the splines stripped out on the part where the shaft goes into the inboard cup and my boot caught on fire car is an 82 subaru gl the one in the signature. I replaced the axel and 100 miles later the new boot was torn. So now im looking to find a Legacy or imprezza with low miles and/ or good condition for around $3000 in the washington area. must be all wheel drive and a manual transmission. Thanks Glen
  16. Thanks for all the posts. I think i will try replacing the valve seals and eventually the carborator when i find a good one. I inspected the heads when they where off and they didnt apear to have any visable cracks and i have driven it a month since changing the headgaskets and the oil is still clean and the radiator is no longer emptying its collant into the block in a 20 minite drive like it did before. When i took apart my spare head to see what it would take to replace the valve seals i noticed that only the intake valves appear to have seals on them is this normal or should the exhaust valvles have seals too. also for changing the seals with the heads still on the block how do you keep the valve from moving with the spring. the on spare head i had to put somthing underneith the valve to keep it from opening when compressing the spring, maybe a spring compressor would work better than the die holder from my tap and die set.
  17. I bought my 82 subaru gl about 2 years ago and since I bought it I haven’t had more than a month straight without having to fix something. I replaced the engine last summer with a 75 thousand mile engine, and last month the drivers side head gasket blew and created a milk shake in my crankcase. I drove it like that for two weeks before I replaced the head gaskets. Even before the head gasket blew I have started to notice blue smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting up in the morning but not every morning, the smoke goes away after warm up but it now smells like something burning coming out of the exhaust when I shut it down after a drive. I checked the plugs for oil but they where dry but looked like they could be fowled. Car is getting harder to start in the morning and idles at 3000 rpm when cold but when warmed up to operating temperature the car stalls when stopped. Engine doesn’t seem to idle very smoothly and the exhaust seems to puff a lot more that I remembered it. Strong puffs followed by almost no flow. any advice or opinions would be appreciated If it’s the carburetor I will replace it but I don’t want to replace it and find out that the engine is going bad because I just when through this 6 months ago. I am seriously considering getting ride of the thing at getting an early legacy or impreza. I am in college and can’t keep spending a week every few months doing a major repair job, It hasn’t stranded me anywhere yet but I don’t want it to quit on me when I am driving 270 miles between school and college I have just about given up on the thing. If any one knows of a decent 1990-1994 awd legacy or 93 to 95 awd impreza for a good deal let me know I might be interested in getting one of those and getting ride of the 82 wagon Sorry for the rant
  18. yep its the car in my signature and it the oil does look like a milk shake.
  19. I think my head gaskets just blew is it possible for them to blow in such a way that coolant can get into the crank case but oil cant get into the radiator. the exhaust hasnt smelled of coolant except the coolant and oil that makes its way into the intake after it clogs up the pvc system and backs up into the air filter housing. also the spark plugs looked normal when i checked them. Is it ok to just change out the headgaskets without rebuilding the engine the oil only looked bad for about a week before i stopped driving it the lifters where beginning to become noisy.
  20. Found 1979 4x4 wagon on seattle craigslist for 150 dollars http://seattle.craigslist.org/pts/112979806.html
  21. I just got this other carb for my car and it looks to be the same except for a few differences the automatic choke has screws instead of rivits holding the cover on, the bigest difference i can see though is that my old carb has one tube coming out diagonaly above the primary venture but not above the secondary, while the new carb that will be going in has two tubes one over the primary and one over the secondary. Can any one tell me what the tubes are for and if they mater in swaping carbs. Thanks, Glen
  22. My 82 gl stumbles when driving steady down the highway at cruise but it doest stumble when idling and if i get on the accelerator pedal the stumble goes away and i seem to have normal power. So far i regaped the plugs and changed the wires because one of them was loose, any other ideas to what the problem might be.
  23. Ive heard that some people on this board have driven with out a front axle for indefinate periods of time with no problems, some do it becuase they like the rear wheel drive handling. I dont think you need to worry.
  24. Car is an ea81 with an ea82 engine and transmision, i dont believe they had a 5 speed duel range tranny until 85 on the ea 82's, before that they where 4 speeds. I think that you would use the axles for an ea 81 becuase the ea 82 was a wider car so had longer axle's.
