Thank you for your advice - What I want to do please is stop the starter from being disabled, so I can use the spare key without a remote control. My daughter needs the remote, but I need to start the car with the spare key to service it. The remote has 2 buttons on it and the left one is always needed to enable the starter. If all the doors are locked and then I use the spare key to unlock the driver's door the car will not start, unless I fetch the remote and press its left-hand button. The remote is labelled 'Pursuit'. Gil

I have now bought a 98 Legacy Sedan to go with my 96 and 99 Legacy Wagons! I have seen short references to the following problem in the list but - This 98 has an irritating alarm which disables the starter unless you 'subtract the first number you thought of and stand on your head'. Is there a permanent way to stop it doing this please - as an amateur sorry I would need a blow-by-blow account? Gil

I tested the Impreza but it was real noisy somewhere in the rear and the engine was rough. Also it required tremendous force to move the shift lever. I am sure it was just what I wanted if it had been in decent order, but this one was the worst condition car I have ever driven. I am looking again at the 98 Sedan but would prefer a wagon with roof bars. Why would the shift lever have been so stiff? Gil

Well nipper thanks for your advice - I always read your contributions with great interest. My daughter passed the test despite the flashing light from the AT oil temp. I can't detect anything wrong with the car on full lock. I am going to disconnect the battery and reconnect it and also try the car in FWD only. Then it will be to the garage on Tuesday! Thanks Gil

I've had a long period free from occasional AT oil temp light flashing, but regrettably it has started again in my 99 Legacy Wagon, on the eve of my daughter's driving test! This time it starts after the car has been running a mile and stays flashing. When car is hot and stopped and restarted the light is again off for a mile, then starts and stays flashing again, so it may not be oil-temperature related? Any offers from your experience please? This has foxed me - When I plug my tire inflator into the cigar lighter socket in my 99 Legacy today, I do get a surprise ! It has always worked OK - when I turn the ignition key of course. Today when I turn the key the inflator does not come on but - guess what - something(s) else does - the cooling fans come on at the front of the car ! HELP! Please help to save me time wire tracing - has it happened to you? Gil
