What is a good headlight bulb?
gcleeton replied to soobmater's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Autozone sell a sealing grease to stop moisture getting past the bulb holder to the bulb itself, which shortens the life. -
I had a surprise the other day. We live in a lake effect snow belt in Buffalo and have occasional skids which have written off two of my three Legacies (not me driving of course!). Thinking of fat racing tires, I said to our local garage mechanic I thought I needed the widest possible tires fitted, but to my surprise he said no the NARROWEST tires! I thought about this and wonder if he means to get maximum pressure on the snow (Pressure = Force divided by Area). Is he correct please? Buffalo Gil

Hello again - After traveling a few miles in my 99 Legacy, often the heater suddenly stops working and the engine temperature dramatically rises. If I stop the car for a few minutes the engine temp goes down quickly and the heater activates again. What do you suggest please? I tested the coolant with a hydrometer and the antifreeze is much too weak. (All the floats sank!). Do you think icing initially caused the problem? Gil

I tried everything I could think of on my 96 Legacy headlights but the only product which worked was 'Headlight Restorer/Defogger' from CV Crystal View Chemicals http://www.crystalviewchemicals.com/myheadlight/index.html which I bought at Wal Mart for about 20 dollars. I think Advance Auto Parts also stocks it. Gil

I squirted switch cleaner in the switches on the passenger side and then in the driver child lock window switch. The rear passenger window came to life. I put the front passenger window fully down and squirted silicon grease on the plastic sealing strip and the front passenger window works now. Thanks for all your valuable advice once again.

I have cleaned/repaired/replaced my 96, 98, 99 Legacy window switches from time to time, but now I need advice please - On my 96 Legacy, the PAIR of passenger side windows will not go down, only up, when operated from the passenger side. They will go up and down when operated from the driver side? Gil

This only worked for a day then the car wouldn't start. I heard the starter solenoid click but it no turn! It was towed home Oh the shame of it! The next morning it started and worked all day but failed again in the evening and more shame! So I can't understand it? Unless the relay which inhibits the starter has a mind of its own? Watch this space! Help! 'Daddy there's no Subaru' Naturally my wife has Grey Subaru and daughter has Red one so I have been 'marooned' all day.

It's easy to disable a stupid Pursuit alarm - as was fitted to my 'new' Subaru Legacy Sedan 98 - which would not start after the battery discharged and was re-charged and re-connected - the car flashed its lights and also for good measure disabled its starter. I had set it in Valet Mode but it re-energized itself when the battery discharged - so I decided to rid myself of this ridiculous device. I am so poor that I only have 3 cars and no valuables to display inside them. Undo the screws holding the cover plate under the steering wheel. Near to the alarm module there are two fuses in the wiring - a blue one and an orange one. Remove them BOTH and you will be free of the wretched device and its remotes. The key will then only lock the driver door, but if you press the interior master lock switch before you close the doors then all the doors will be locked, hopefully with your key outside. Incidentally I am very pleased with this car as an addition to my 96 and 99 Legacy Wagons - it is quieter inside, probaby due to the acoustics of the sedan body interior, the steering is lighter and it is even harder to swing its back end. It came with 4 spare steel wheels fitted with new Winterforce snow tires for 4800 (a bit more than the 4300 I paid for my 99 with 4 spare tires). My daughter to whom I gave it as her first car, spotted it at night on the side of the road and said 'Daddy, there's a Subaru for sale!' Gil

I have tried the advice in all threads related to headlight fogging on my 96 Legacy Wagon - brake fluid, every polish known to man, buffing, cling film, acrylic spray. They come up perfect but fog nearly opaque again in a day. My 98 and 99 Legacy Wagons have different lenses which do not fog. Desperate!
