Hey.. what kind of exhaust do you guys have on your cars? I LOVE the sound from those two wagons in the video clips. I want to rip the stock exhaust off my '85 and get it to sound nice and thumpy (gotta love that flat-4 sound). Also, can any of you guys help me get my dash lights working? I can NOT figure out why they don't work. Also, I need that PCV valve thingy fixed so it doesn't burn oil on hard rights. Thanks, Matt

I'd LOVE more than anything to do a dual-range conversion, but first of all my car is a craptastic auto, don't you need a 5-speed for the swap? Second I wouldn't have the resources and know-how to do it. Ah well. Matt

Too bad.. I really wanted to come. Although my 2wd GL sedan would have been the worst offroading car there, still would have been fun.

Strange engine 'knock' problem
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
BTW.. this is for an '85GL with a CARB.. I'd be interested in coming to the Subaru thing this weekend, but i happen to be working 9-5 that day. What time are you guys getting together? Matt -
Just today as I was going around a freeway on-ramp 'cloverleaf', I accelerated at the top to merge and the engine started knocking or pinging like crazy, and sent a huge smoke cloud out the back. I let off the gas and then accelerated again, and the pinging and smoke were gone. What could have caused this? I only use at least 90 octane gas, so i'm sure its not bad gas, and the fact it only happened after I went around a hard right turn.

Ah, the car that started my obsession

My first and current Subaru. At first I hated the thing due to all the problems I had getting it running, now I love the thing. -
Loyale manual tranny VS. automatic
mschafe replied to nozoxon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I must say I have driven only manuals on every car i've owned. I currently have an '85 GL AUTO, and I think the Auto gets up and goes good. Seems to be more initial torque when you mash the gas than with a manual, I kind of like that. Although it does shift VERY slow. Matt -
What happened to my dash lights?
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, my stereo still works, and I couldn't find any blown fuses... Very very strange! I guy i'll have to drive in the dark for a while. -
What happened to my dash lights?

I banged on it, pulled on it, turned it around and around and no luck. It must be a fuse somewhere, although I can't find it. -
What happened to my dash lights?
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's on an '85 GL. Its not the dimmer, as that's the first thing I messed with. Real strange, as they worked fine yesterday, but not tonight. Matt -
I went to drive the car tonight, and there are no dash lights. All the other lights work (like warning lights, interior, etc..) but there are no dash lights when the headlights are on. Is there a fuse somewhere? I checked the main fuse panel and couldn't find one specific to the dash, or any that were blown for that matter. Where do I start? Thanks, Matt

Performance stuff for EA82 carbed engines?
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I tried advancing the timing on my car, but it got to the point where it started 'pinging' quite a bit, so I backed it off. It did give it more kick though. Matt -

Yes, this thing definetly needs a new fuel filter i'm sure. Where's that located by the way? I also don't have the resources to weld a whole new exhaust system up, but that would probably be the next thing i'd do. Btw.. how much would a Weber setup cost? Thanks, Matt -
I have an '85 GL i've been restoring slowly, and now have the thing running, driving pretty good. A weird thing that happens sometimes is that when I start it, the ECS light will come on and the car will die. It may happen a couple times, then work normally (with no warning light)... But that aside, the car IS a gutless wonder. Makes getting up to 60 a challenge. Is there really anything you can do to the carbed NON FI, NON turbo engines to squeeze a bit more HP outta them? Thanks, Matt

Vids of older turbo Subarus?
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
jazzician - any clip yet of your car?? -
I'm curious if anyone has any video clips of older EA81T or EA82T Subarus running/driving? I've always wanted to see one of these in action, and older turbo Suby's are REALLY hard to find here in MN. Matt

I tried driving the car this afternoon, and it started running really rough, and would die. The ECS light also came on. What does this all mean? I just put TONS of new parts and work into this car, and it was running great until I decided to try driving it to work. Thanks, Matt

I have an '85 GL that I recently got working again after it needed a distributor. I made reference points when I transfered in the new distributor, but I think I may be off a few notches on the cam gear. I had to turn the distributor all the way to the right to get it to start/run decently, but I feel the timing is still off (not advanced enough?). Whats the easiest way to check this, and how should the engine be running if I have the timing correct? Thanks, Matt

85 GL leaking coolent from somewhere
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, its looking from the front of the car. I suspect its the thermostat housing, as thats the only thing that hasn't been replaced, and the pool of coolent is pretty much right under it. ALTHOUGH, I could NOT see it dripping while the car was running, I just noticed a pool of coolent on the ground after a while. Very strange. -
I finally got my 85 GL running after 6 months of sitting (needed a distributor). It runs great now, but is leaking coolent from somewhere. Its pooling on the top left of the engine when the car heats up, and then drips down to the ground. Its not a small leak, its coming out pretty good. The hose connections look fine, and the car has a brand new radiator and water pump installed. I just can't see where it is coming from. If someone can help, I need to get this car fixed so i can put it up for sale asap. Thanks, Matt

Need help with 85 DL Wiring
mschafe replied to mschafe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm.. I thought that was how it was hooked up, but I can't get it to start. I tried to be careful about matching up the mark on the rotor on the new distributor so the timing wouldn't get messed up, but I have a feeling it could be off. So ALL the black wires go to the +? It seemed like the one black wire with the little condenser on it was a ground, but maybe not. Matt -
Hi.. I have an '85 Subaru DL 4 door with Nippen ignition that needed a distributor replaced. I put it in, but FORGOT what wires go where on the coil. I have 3 black wires (one to distrib), and two yellow (one to distrib). Which ones go to + and which ones to -? Thanks for ANY help, Matt
