Move your jeep to the side, SUBARU coming through!
Alliturken replied to newsance's topic in Off Road
I didnt say I saw any in Scoobs in the pics (?)....that's why I was talking about fabbing one to the hilt to go where any Jeep/Truck/Crawler could go. 'Cause the terrain looks like a lot of fun. ok I just went back and re-read my earlier posts. Nope, I didnt say I saw any Scoobs on the 4x4 site with the Jeep pics. I did say: "Anyone who could get thru that in a Scoob would truly be my hero!" "Could/Would", not did, are the important words here. I'll try to be more clear next time. -

Those are nice pics....fun looking trails and beautiful area. (BTW, I was rafting up near Whistler a couple months back....how far away is Sooke? I realize BC is a huge place.) I am just learning about the technical rock crawling stuff. Never have done it...nothing serious, anyway Just rocky washes and what not. But the more I see and read the more interested I am. I'm sure our Scoobs are capable of some incredible things, and I'd like to lift one and try it. Still, I'm guessing that for the really ridiculous stuff, you'd need more vehicle. Then again, I'm a newbie at it, so what do I know. It'd be cool to see someone fabricate custom control arms, shocks, axles, etc., to push it further than no Scoob has gone before. And, hang with a purpose-built truck, obstacle for obstacle. -

I found that page to be incredibly informative in general. Anyone here tried some of that stuff, like the V8 2bl carb? Or disabling the vacuum advance, or the head milling? I love how clean that motor looks, devoid of all the vac lines. Especially the small breather filters coming out of the heads. Can we do that to our cars? What would the effect be? I'm hungry for a little knowledge here.:eh: -
Is this hatch 2wd or 4wd?
Alliturken replied to Alliturken's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. Is there an easy way to tell if it is a hydraulic lifter motor, by looking at one? Any opinions on whether or not this car would be worth doing a tranny swap to go 4WD? -

Toybuilder, that is a very cool 4x4 site. I just saved it in my faves. I like the way they have the trail info organized. Also, some of the pics in there are really incredible! I don't really know where the limits of a Subaru are as a rock crawler, (I'm more of a dirt/gravel road "slippy" guy). But some of the stuff in the pics on that site look darn well impassable in anything that does not have mega suspension travel and bombproof axles, joints, diffs. Anyone who could get thru that in a Scoob would truly be my hero! I like the old Toyo truck, btw. -

Do you mean a motor with hydraulic lifters? When (year) did they go to this? And, forgive my ignorance, but why are the hydraulics so much better? No adjustment? BTW, congrats on the Rubicon outing. You guys are nuts. You've inspired me to go down and do a Baja outing (500 miles) with a bunch of trucks and Jeeps next year. Not nearly as technical as Rubicon.....mostly sand, rock and water crossings. But I wanna do it just to say I did! Gotta get a new rig first tho..... I'll do a sep post on the Baja goal a little later with a link to the folks that organize it. (Ohh, I just hijacked my own thread for a second....doh.) -
Example of bad autocross form ( pic.)

You 'll even see that on EVO VIII's! Seems like almost every EVO autocross pic I see shows the inside rear off, or about to be off. -

If I had a VIN, I'd already know. His ad says it's an 86, btw. The body looks so nice, I'm considering maybe trying to swap in a 4wd driveline. Depends on what I can do in the price negotiation. -

I think you are correct...2WD. I dont have an exact address where the car is parked, so I can't go look yet. I hope to talk to the owner this morning to get all details. The thing is in such good shape...wish it was 4WD! -
Can anyone tell from the pic? It's sitting a little low so it looks like maybe 2wd to me. If so, too bad, it's for sale near me. Nice price too. I have not been able to speak with the owner yet to find out for sure. If it is 4wd, me wantey. white hatch for sale

Exhaust: If you ask around locally, I bet you can find a muffler shop from the "wrong side of the tracks" to do the stuff cheaply, even the manifold pipe. I found a guy here locally who made me a crossover/uppipe for less than $200, and he did some pretty nice work on the passenger side of it to direct the flow into the upipe. Take in pics of what you want and negotiate. Here's one.....this is the pic I used to get mine made: X-pipe By the way I believe the stock one from the 89 turbo will fit the 86. Not 100% certain, but cannot think of any reason why not. 89 was same engine, slight differences in heads maybe, but still the same exhaust port bolt pattern. That seems like a bargain if in good shape. The stock part is HIGHLY restrictive, though. I think the subspeed link will work if you drop out the first e. I dunno if they are still in business, tho. Let us know how it goes. -

I forgot to mention that. It made a big difference in throttle response, I dunno if it actually made any hp, maybe a few. Good mod in any case. -

Dang it, the pic attachment did not work......must be too big. Try this link, I have the same one up on yahoo: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tv3wrx/vwp?.dir=/1986+Subaru+GL+Turbo+Coupe+AWD&.dnm=P1300011.jpg&.view=t -

Boost Cut: Look between the air filter box and the strut top. There are two round plastic solenoids (one over the over), ea with one vac line plugging into them. The top one is the boost control sol......do not mess with that one. Bottom one is the boost cut sol. Just pull off the short vac line goining into it, and cap it or screw a bolt into it. Done. Again though, careful going over 10 psi until you intercool and richen it. If you MUST do it, back off on the timing about 4 or 5 degress, but that does negate the power gain some. Listen out for ping and knock....I'm pretty sure you'll have some. BTW, I have spoken to the guy who built the original RX rally cars for SUBARU in the 80's; he says with the stock Turbo you are just blowing hotter air above 12 or 13 psi and not gaining power. Boost controller: Pull off the small short hose going from turbo to wastegate actuator...if you look across the top of air filter box, toward the turbo, you will see the hose. Mount the controller there. Be sure to get the "IN" and "out" hoses going to the right place.....OUT goes to the wastegate side. I found a pic to attach, (after this pic was taken I added a zip tie to stabilize it against the intake tract): -

Above 10 or 11 psi boost the clutch started to slip on hard take-offs from lights and also at other times. This particular clutch is probably toward the second half of its life, but in any case it made me nervous, so I backed off the boost a bit. I dont think the standard clutch for this car holds much pressure, and I did not want to put it to the test, due to $$$ concerns. Skip or one of the other UberRooMechanics might have some more useful info on what the clutch can stand. -

I'm not Mr. super turbo mechanic or anything, but I'll chime in here with a few experiences with my 86 Turbo GL: 1. To get going toward your hp goals and make the thing run a whole lot better in general, I'd say get a new downpipe and exhaust made first, before anything else. Makes a big difference across the board. You can have back-alley muffler shops do this pretty cheaply, and it opens up the high end of the car tremendously. If you can get a new crossover pipe (header), that also makes a huge difference. I'd estimate 15+ hp gain from all that, maybe even more. Power curve does not drop off so much at higher rpms, which makes the car a lot more fun to drive. 2. In order to increase the boost beyond 10psi you need to disable the boost cutoff. Up to 86 this can be done by plugging a vacuum/boost line near the solenoid, but after 86 it needs to be done electronically, and I'm not sure how to do that exactly but a search here would prolly locate the info. 3. Having said the above, unless you intercool it, I would not go beyond 10 anyway; you'll get knock and ping, even if you richen it a little (I did and I recommend it as a safeguard), unless you back off on the timing, which negates some of the hp gain, and makes it run like a dog (no power) when off boost. This problem improves if you do the crossover and exhaust work, because part of the deal is that with the stock system the boost just has nowhere to go, and does not get out of the head quickly enough. (I hope I said that right....) I believe that with full exhaust redo and 10 psi you'd be at around 140 hp or so, maybe a little more. Intercool it and go to 12/13 psi and you'll be near 160. To safely go any more than that, you are going to need engine management (computer) to control fueling more precisely. I've heard tales of 200+ hp on stock internals with a slightly larger turbo (from WRX or SAAB or Volvo), intercooling, engine management, and hotrodded injectors, but I'm not sure about what you'd expect in reliability. In my own case I was happiest with the car after all the exhaust work, and actually reducing boost from 11/12 down to 8 or 9. Good luck with the car...have fun. -
Exhaust System & Intake Question
Alliturken replied to Gregg's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have 2.5" on my WRX, but I though it to be awfully big for the 1.8 running only 7-8 lbs of boost. So I went with 2". Downpipe is 2.5, narrowing to 2, though. And it any case, like I said, it freed up the higher revs immensely. -
Exhaust System & Intake Question
Alliturken replied to Gregg's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On my recent cross country trip in an 86 turbo, I replaced the brand new cold air intake setupwith the stock box/K&N immediately after arrival on the east coast. Why? The one I had made at a muffler shop just before the trip, similar to what you have in mind, is steel. It soaks up lots and lots of engine bay heat. It got so hot we could not even touch it most of the time, and we could sense that it was sucking hp at times. Throttle response was KILLER, though, most of the time. Anyway, off it came. What did work extremely well on the car was a new crossover pipe, larger diameter than stock and no cat.....freed up the higher revs of the engine immensely. 2" exhaust from turbo back also did the same, made a big difference, even if it sucked up a tad of torque at low rpms. I may try the intakeagain using pvc pipe or something that wont soak heat so much. -

If I'd have known you were that close I may have stopped in! Let's see some pics of the RX, too! BTW I gotta go with Caleb on the recommendation for the stock wheels on that hatch if you decide to autocross it anymore. The bigger ones do look better of course, but those little 13's will perform a ton better for that kind of driving. -

So good I just stole it from ya! That's a cool hatch. Just out of curiosity, what kind of shape are the struts in? You could try some spring boosters from Pepboys to see if it'll stiffen them up for autoX days. Check them often though, those things arent known for staying in place very well. Hey where is bent mountain? I was just in Williamsburg for a week. -
Well the GL TurboCoupe made it all the way from Pacific Ocean to Atlantic coast last week, nearly 4000 miles, some of it off road, including a +10,000ft dirt/gravel pass in NM near Abuquerque. The only mishap was a torn CV boot (perhaps from the offroading), which was discovered in Texas the next day, and repaired with a quickboot kit in a motel parking lot that night and early the next morning. Thanks to USMB member CalebZ for his immense help with that by phone. Also thanks to James Hogan in Virginia for rapping with us as we went up highway 81 in the Blue Ridge mountains. Pics can be seen here: http://photos.yahoo.com/tv3wrx Select the "cross country" album. The young guy in the pics is my 16 year old son, who lives in VA and is now using the car. I just flew back to CA yesterday. Highlights: Mechanical: Averaged around 24 mpg, but much much less when in the hills or offroad. Used 1/2 qt oil the entire trip, along with a couple ounces of coolant. Lost a wheel weight on front left, got a bit bouncy. Did the whole trip without AC. 108 degrees in Nevada, 102 in Arkansas. Holy dehydration. Day by Day Highlights (for anyone who is bored and looking for something to read): 1. CA to Zion, UT: Hot hot hot hot in the desert. Temp gauge rose slightly over half. but no more than that. Avg speed around 80 or 85 mph. Stopped in Baker (near Death Valley), and Vegas. Camped out at Zion Natl Park. Perfect night. Breathtaking spot. 2. Zion to Bryce Canyon SP, to Shiprock NM. Big long day of driving. Started by touring around Zion, then went to Bryce. Found the best gravel road I've ever been on, perfect rounded gravel, like driving on snow. Car stayed sideways for around 3 hours straight. Taught the kid how to drift. Found other good dirt roads near park. Cruised on down into AZ, stopped for lunch and to check out pawn shops, then hit Lake Powell area. More dirt roading. After, drove straight thru to Shiprock NM and four corners. Almost ran out of gas 20 mi from there. Could not find motel, so slept in back of coupe at Navaho Nation regional hospital parking lot. Long long day. 3. Went out to shiprock monument, drove the dirt road on south approach to get there, and other roads ringing it. Climbed it all morning. Headed off to Farmington to see an 82 wagon we saw in the paper, but it was an auto. Great shape though. Headed down to Albuquerqe, got big thunderstorms along the way. At Cuba, decided to take rt 125 pass offroad toward Los Alamos and Santa Fe. Perfect packed clay road for around 40 miles, big fun. Started to rain, and the clay turns to the most slippery substance known to man. Had fun on it at first, then close calls made us slow down a bit. OK a lot. Got into Santa Fe, and down to Alb. via 10,0000 Sandia dirt pass. Rocky and tough but fun. Hit Albu. Bunked at the "Deluxe Inn", $24. Had a Sambuca. Mmmmm. 4. Waffle house breakfast, then washed red clay off car in a u-wash-it joint. Off to Tucumcari on 40. CV boot was gone but we did not yet know this. Discovered it while at filling station at Texas border. Called CalebZ, he helped us with a plan for getting a Quickboot kit in Amarillo. Got it, and drove on to Clinton, OK. Hot humid place, no breeze. Ate, went to rt 66 museum, then got under car and cut off boot. Cleaned joint with carb cleaner and went to bed. 5. At dawn repacked joint, and found that new boot was too small. Got an exchange in Clinton, and installed new boot. Went on perfectly. On the road later than planned but ok. Flat hot drive to Forest city AR, camped in state park. Became mosquito food. Got poison oak looking for lost hatchet after hatchet-throwing contest. (The kid beat me, dang-it.) Still have pock marks on my feet! 6. Out early, drove thru Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville. Hit rains after VA border in evening. Called James Hogan (USMB) as we passed thru. Too messy to set up camp, Slept in back of coupe in church parking lot just off Blue Ridge pkwy near Roanoke. Heavy rains and lightning storms......cool. 7. Up late, pretty tired at this point. Pastor pulls into church (Sunday!) wondering what we are doing there, gives puzzled looks. Oh well. Drive off for BR parkway, take it up to I-64, stopping at stream to play. Son kicked my rump roast in a rock-skip contest, (skip rock in creek and hit target on other side). We hit I64, and head down thru Charlottesville in to Richmond, then arrive in Williamsburg. One day after arrival, guy at gas station offers me cash for the car. "There ain't a SPEC 'o rust on at thang!" I politely decline. We did it! Great fun, great adventure. The little Roo that could. Now I need a new project. 84 wagon maybe? Hatch? I dunno.
