  1. ok got it all off, I could not quite see the blow, BUT the machinist found it, he says you can see a small dip in the head where it blew too, bu all in all he says they look really good As for getting the rounded off bolt off, I tried everything, smacking it with a hammer a few times, harbor freight bolt extractor kit, Irwin bolt extractor kit and finally I just welded and old wrench to the bolt... problem solved
  2. well I was almost done but one of the bolts on the cam bearings is rounded off... it was like that before I got to it... picking up an Irwin extractor set in the morning (mine got left at my last job... not too happy about that)
  3. Gary why can I not use the timing belt, it has about 7,000 miles on it and I can still see all the timing marks
  4. I figured out what happened... I forgot to disconnect the transmission mounts... I got i back in place though, nothing you can't fix with the use of a BF HAMMER
  5. well I just can not get the passenger side to go up GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
  6. well I jacked up the engine and got the left head off, BUT now the engine is cock eyed and moved forward about 1" nothing seems to get it in place, and now the right side head is close to the side rail than before... ANY ideas?
  7. 2.5 hours into this thing. nearly done with the other side too.. the head gasket looked perfect on this side... the other side should be interesting
  8. ok it looks like from reading over the service records we now know what happened... The previous owner was having some over heating issues on 09/13/2012 the following parts where replaced Timing belt water pump crank seal cam seal valve cover gaskets (which still seem to be leaking) thermostat and seal (both genuine subaru) 2 drive belts??? (k040353/k050345)

  10. Perfect, thank you guys... now where should I order the kit from, and which kit do you think works best
  11. According to the service records the engine was replaced when the oil change place forgot to put oil in the engine... from what the service records say it was done around 120k miles and the used engine had less than 50k miles, there is no mention of any exhaust or ecu changes that being said I was rolling down the highway today, noticed my A/C was not working, looked at the temp gauge and it was pegged... pulled over let it cool down a little bit, then started the engine with the radiator cap off, a small reve would cause exhaust gas to shoot out of the radiator... lol
  12. I have a 1998 Subaru legacy outback, I need a head gasket set but my engine was a random used engine... so what do I do I was able to pull this engine ID number off the back near the starter 889649 thank you for any help
  13. this would not normally be a big deal, BUT it lands on the exhaust near the 'Y' pipe section, it is quite noticeable after driving on the highway for a while and then getting off and coming to a stop there is no smoke, there is nearly no oil used in between changes. I have hear that it is unlikely that it is an oil pan, but more likely to be something else... any ideas for me? thanks a million (in advance)
  14. point is it can allow the front wheels to unlock and in a turn
  15. Bolt on? Beats me I built most of the parts and modded many other parts on my Jeep, I am all for it, I have torn the crap outta the Jeep that I built, interesting thing is none of the parts I built ever broke... doesn't matter what vehicle you put a welded front diff in,it's asking for trouble, it should be common sense, there only place I think you could use it is in a straight line, figure out how to make it turn, I dare ya... lol good luck kid
  16. no surprises there the result is always the same, doesn't matter what vehicle you are driving, the front tires need to be able to rotate at different speeds while turning
  17. I maybe new to this forum, BUT I do have positive feedback on other forums for both sales and trades, also a well established paypal account and an active ebay sellers account, all in good standing
  18. What about getting suspension off a newer Subaru? WRX? STI, ect???? I would like to go a little lower than a normal Legacy wagon, looks neat and easier to get in and out of for the kids
  19. Hello all... I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy outback wagon, and man it sits high... anyways I would like to look into lowering it a bit, and I would prefer to scavenge the struts and springs from another Subaru if possible. The only thing I know so far is that the Outback package had taller springs, taller struts and some weird spacers on the subframes... Help?
  20. heresay??? no, the issue is you will be dragging one tire or the other depending on the direction you want to steer... as a result the vehicle will tend to push forward, instead of actually turning, and if you are on the road, chances are you will destroy the diff in a very short period of time I can say this, even in the world of fully off road trail and rock driven Jeep we try to stay away from welded front diffs, welded rear diffs are no big deal, aside from a mild change in the feel of the vehicle and some increased tire wear which can be minimized by rotating the tires often Have you looked into a limited slip for your diff? It would be much more friendly and offer a lot more traction when needed Short: I say do it so I can see the carnage, because you are gonna wish you didn't do it the first time you try to steer, however if you are planning to go in a straight line it would be fine I guess...
  21. I can tell you this, a welded front diff will make turning almost impossible
  22. Hello from Missouri! Recently purchased a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon, 186k miles on the, automatic (BOO!!!) AWD, nearly perfect interior, all service and repair documents going back to day 1, recently had the timing chains and sprockets done, new valve cover gaskets and the engine was replaced about 75k miles ago according to the service records, runs and drives great, small oil pan leak, only code being thrown is the evap code, AWD is function great, a few minor dings here and there only paid $1,700 and best of all it is REALLY easy to get the kids in and out
