my front end...
was shimming and shakin and I think I finally fixed it. I've gone through re/man axles that are broke from day one(rubber boots split or clicking starts)...got some gck's on amazon that were on sale...returned some of the broke ones back to autozone(keep your reciepts), and when they got some instock, I got a NEW gck axle(don't know why)...anyway, after 5 axle replacements, new bearings, some tierod ends, steering rack...it finally comes down to BENT RIMS, yep...stock steel subbie rims, not the spoke type. Tire guy told me that if you need more than 4 ozs. wheel weight, you are probably going to have some vibration. So, I got all good tires, and rims that need 1oz or less bal. weight, and the vibe is gone...first time in 2 years. I've got les schwab, winter trax, 185x80x13, and I get really good mileage out of them...

Howdy, welcome from another brat owner...also got those vw hippie rigs...also on the samba site!...72 westy(project), and a 62 BAJA bug(4 sale?). I used to hate the brat, ugh, wouldn't have one...a friend needed someone to "fix" his brat...I fixed it and then bought it,280,000 on original engine and still gets over 30 to gal!!! just got another 82 brat(GL,5spd,t-top), and am trying to get enough good parts to put back on road(last owner, high school kids...dents,siezed motor)...and yes the PNW does seem to be the place to get all kinds of used parts...I say that cause of all the free stuff I've been able to get...whole cars even...anyway, this board makes it all possible...

W000000t!!!!!1 (pt. 2)
Mark, theres also the electric fuel pump to think about. Was this car being driven on a regular basis, like daily? You might try takin the fuel delivery line off the carb and seein if you get fuel delivery when you turn the key on...remember to catch the fuel, so you can see whats in it. My brat has 2 fuel filters, the 1st in line is under the car by the electric fuel pump and the 2nd is in the engine compartment. The 2nd one might give you a false visual reading as the first is the one thats clogged...and then theres the water settling in the tank on vehicles that don't get driven much and never filled up full...cold today,rc

W000000t!!!!!1 (pt. 2)
So when it gets cold out like freezing, you may want to check your fuel filters and see if there is water in them that is icing up and clogging at the filter. When it's warm it is thawed and gas is able to pass through, etc...why it might start up and run for a min...early morn/late eve., is all froze up again...hope this helps....

Exhaust Studs??? can they be repaired
Yep...as gloyale said, if you hadn't used the jb weld, you could just tap the exsisting hole to the next size, metric,standard...doesn't matter...I've done this in a variety of situations...tap new threads, put in stud or bolt...in the exhaust systems I always use some kind of thread ease/never sieze, on the nut/bolt threads that will always be removed...which helps when its time to remove exhaust items, or the water pump threads...anything that will rust or heat weld to the block etc...

Front half axle
When I replaced the front axles on my 82 brat I noticed that the shafts were thicker than the rebuilt replacements. It seems that all other cars, except the brat, had smaller dia. shafts, which is apperantly the only ones that get rebuilt. I kept the brats axles and returned cores which were some junk ones that I got off my parts wagon/hatch car. I also now have a factory manual, and it does give different axle shaft specs for wagon/hatch etc,4x4,and brat...don't know if this is an answer to your question...the rebuilt pair I put on, one just failed the other day(boot split, vibration, grease all over wheel well) and I returned to auto-zone for a free replacement...keep those reciepts...rc

83 Subaru Brat problems
I had fuel delivery problems when I got my brat(car hadn't been run in a couple of yrs.)Brat has Carter/Weber one barrel stock carb. Replaced the usual, all the filters, eventually the fuel pump quit. Could be crud in the tank, not able to unload enough as you get up to speed. The needle and seat in the carb float bowl could be sticking or the float level is wrong, engine starved for fuel at high speeds. When I was replacing my fuel filters, I used to hook up a rubber house into fuel line and BLOW BACK into the fuel tank(gas cap off/open) to see if it was crud blocking my fuel line. This did make a difference, and there is a way to drain tank(unscrew bolt) to see what is in the tank...This car used to buck and kick and it took awhile to get it running smooth...at one time I even though the ECU unit was bad...but it was all fuel related...good luck,rc

is it possable to put a snowplow on a loyale
I just made a A-type drag that I pull behind brat, and plowed my driveway, this past snowstorm. Our driveway is pretty steep, so plowing is all downhill. Being the first time, it did well. fine powder. The slower I went the better it did. I have dual range/in low. I used old batteries for weight. I may want to buy a plow, or adapt atv plow...and one of these days I'll learn how to do the picture/photo...rc

Morris minor
WOW! Love this post...I got 2 morris minors, one I want to keep stock and the other have been lookin at makin into 4x4 with subaru gear. Will have to go back and read these. I have 83-84/ea81 rusty holey coast vehicle, that is the donor. I've had the bugeye/sprite and did have one of these MM's running pretty good but the parts ain't cheap. Drove it like a baja, NOT really made for that...William Morris was a bicycle mechanic in the late 1890's,quit school to support his parents, put together the BULLNOSE MORRIS(pre-henry ford), the mechanics at the factory,Morris Garage, needed a name for their little race cars, "Hey Billy, what do we call these things?" "MG"s" The rest is history, so they say...the engines I got are 950cc's, slightly over 2.5" cyls. The one I am trying to keep stock, isn't really stock...dual SU,s from austin healy...MG midget rear end/higher end speed...I took a trip down to SF and got close to 50mpg, could only do 55, and hillclimbs aren't the MM's specialty...The biggest motor made for the morris was a 1098cc. I think the largest motor I've seen in a morris was a MG 1500 and that took some rearranging. So just think of the power with a 1800 subaru motor! I love the MICKEY MOUSE look...

High mileage poll
My 82 brat, 246,000 on engine, that is still getting 32 mpg, with all my rafting gear. I got it with blown tranny,(stripped out 2nd-3rd shifter hub and sleeve), replaced with a man. d/r 4spd. out of 84 wagon...got the tranny cleaned off and written in jy yellow, was 81 SUB!!! This tranny just WENT OUT, because the clutch link cable housing, decided to break just as I was shifting, and broke mid shift so I ground a bunch and seemed to burr up second and 1st so I couldn't get into, even AFTER I replaced cable with new one. So while I got the tranny out, I'm also changing out rear seals, pan gasket, and rebuild oil pump, etc...to try and stop the leaks. Really like these cars...

I got a brat with a heart, 250,000miles, 32mpg. I got it with a bad tranny, sitting 2 years, replaced with a hi/low 4wd(stock was just high), out of 84 wagon(free parts car). Has stock carter/weber carb. Love these cars, and the availability of used parts cars...so you'll see me around here....
