  1. I'm not too positive if they were working before or not, I don't remember the last time I noticed them working so yeah it definitely could've happened before. I'll try to get some pics up later! But I'll try all that you guys have suggested here soon, thank you for the input. (:
  2. Hey guys, so the other day I wired in an inclinometer out of a SR5 4Runner into my 88 GL Wagon. All that I did while wiring this in was I unplugged the clock since it no longer worked, plugged in the cigarette lighter because it was unplugged for some reason, and used two scotch locks on the ground wire and live wire that goes to the cigarette lighter light to get power to the inclinometer. The next morning I realized that my brake lights don't come on when I depress the brake. All other lights in the car work. I checked the fuse that's marked Stop, ECC, and whatever the other thing is. The fuse was good and even tried a new one, made no difference. I haven't checked the switch on the pedal but I assume that's not the issue because it hasn't worked since I wired the meter in. Any ideas? I wouldn't think there'd be any correlation between the cigarette lighter light and the brake lights.
  3. Since Subaru thought it was smart to make their L series vehicles with the most obscure and uncommon bolt pattern imaginable I am stuck with the same issue that all of us have, finding wheels. Sometime down the road I'm planning on getting adaptors or drill a new pattern but for now I'd like to dress up the stock 13'' steelies. I have the factory six spoke wheel covers, I like them but I'd love to get a different set, preferably ones that are like a diamond spoke/mesh pattern like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/13-AfterMarket-Wheel-Cover-Ford-Chevy-Dodge-Plymouth-Hubcaps-4-Hub-Caps-/380581932061?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item589c736c1d&vxp=mtr , however being that this is a Subaru and these are uncommon wheels, would wheel covers from another brand fit properly or am I just as screwed as I am with finding other wheels?
  4. Thanks jj421! 3.Good point with them breaking off and such. I'll figure it out. Where do you have your switch mounted for them? I'm thinking I could use the blank switch for what would be the air suspension for the lights. 4.In your opinion does a 2' lift make a big difference at all in any way besides appearance? Sure there is more ground clearance but has the added height been beneficial for you? 5. How did you go about mounting the fender mirrors and what'd you do with the old mirror?
  5. Hey all! So I've been formulating ideas and plans for my 88 GL D/L 4WD wagon over the past few months. I've done a fair amount of research but I'm still not clear on most subjects. Basically I just want to ask a few questions about a couple of the things I have in mind. Please bear with me here because a lot of this will more than likely be a lot of rambling and running on but I really would appreciate some help and advice! 1.Roof rack-I really dig roof racks especially on wagons so I'd like to get one on here! I'm sort of looking to go for a somewhat old school/retro look with this whole thing so like a rack or basket with wooden slats is what I'd like to somehow fabricate or modify to have. How should I go about mounting it though that would probably be the easiest and effective? There is a junkyard nearby that has several L series Subarus and there's a few with roof racks, could I buy one and drill holes into my roof to mount it? 2.Wheels-It currently has the stock steelies which is alright but tires for 13 inch wheels are difficult to get a hold of these days I've been told. At the same junkyard I mentioned before there is a Peugeot 505 which would have the same bolt pattern, however I don't know if the wheels are still at the junkyard. If so and if they're the right price would I have to make any changes to my car to make it work? I really don't know all that much about wheels are tires but I'm assuming if you have a bigger wheel the tires will have to be taller which could cause rubbing in the wheel well? If the Pugs aren't there then there's not much else for options except a five lug swap or drill out some other wheels. What do you guys suggest? 3.Fog lights-Honestly I'm really surprised because I've searched through these forums for posts on fogs and or driving lights and have yet to find like anything. I have a pair of amber Grote fog lights that I'll probably mount under the front bumper. Any special wiring or mounting tips/advice? 4.Suspension-Really not a big concern of mine but it'd be cool to either lift or lower this thing. I don't want to slam it nor just jack it up but rather go up or down like an 1-4 inches. If there's a cheap and relatively simple bolt in way to lower or raise it then I'll do it. I've seen a couple posts about using some generic coil overs from E Bay but what would I need to modify or change to make it work? 5.Fender Mirrors-I've seen a handful of L series Subies with these and correct me if I'm wrong but earlier ones could be had from the factory with them? I really dig how they look and I'm sure they're actually somewhat useful because you don't have to turn your head away from the road to see them. On E Bay I've seen some Toyota Starlet OEM fender mirrors for around $70. Could these be made to work? I'm thinking all it would entail is drilling holes in the fenders and taking off the original mirrors and making plates to cover the holes. 6.Trim-This is more of a repair question. The chrome trim and seal around the windshield is all loose and broken, how do I go about resealing it? The chrome/black plastic trim that runs around the top of the windows/ hatch is coming off at spots and is revealing the entire chrome trim. Personally I don't much care for the chrome in the first place and just want to take the rest the plastic off and the paint over the chrome. Paint doesn't adhere to chrome very well though does it? How should I go about this? As of now that's all I can really think of so if anyone could help enlighten me on some of these issues it'd be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  7. Few weeks ago I bought an 88 GL Wagon 5spd dual range 4x4. Stickerbombed the grille, fuel door, and the black strip above the rear license plate. Cleaned it to the best of my ability in this time of year. Plastidipped the roof white and soon will have black up there too for a checkerboard. Painted the wiper arms black (I really don't like all the bright work everywhere on this thing). New fuel pump should be here Monday. Next step will be for a new deck, speakers, (they're all blown and the wiring is awful) and I will be covering the visors shift boot and the vinyl on the top of the door panels in a patterned fabric.
  8. Bought a 1988 Subaru GL Wagon last Friday. Cleaned the interior fairly well, painted the wiper arms trim black and replaced the blades, sticker bombed the fuel door, grille, and black portion above the rear license plate. Plastidipping the roof a white and black checkerboard, and a bunch of other small things. Really enjoying it! Surprised a bunch of people with it's 4wd in the snow.

  10. In regards to the mechanical vs hydraulic I have an 82 Dodge Rampage that has a cable op clutch. I know all cars feel different but it felt way too different like something needed adjustment. And the gas thing I'm unsure of, all I was told was it was a regulator or something. I'd have to ask the guy again!
  11. Hey everyone, I'm new here. I decided to join because I am looking into getting a 88 GL Wagon from a man my dad works with. It's the 1.8 (TBI?) coupled to a 5 speed with dual range 4wd, AC, power windows and locks, and silver in color. I might be trading a snowmobile for it otherwise I more than likely will be selling my current car (94 Saturn SL1) and then buying the GL. Anyways, the man who owns it has put a lot of new things into it over the past few years main things being the clutch and motor itself. It has some bubbling paint around where the windshield meets the bodywork. There's also some rust around the rear wheel wells and behind the rear wheels, however the underside of the car looks pretty clean still. I took it for a test drive and it seems to drive okay, it fired right up and was smooth but the clutch pedal had little feel to it and was mushy. Everything else seems clean and functioning. The only things that need work mechanically (to my knowledge) is one side needs new wheel bearings and there is a fuel pressure regulator or something on the gas tank that leaks. With this information that I have provided what is your opinions on it? Is there any red flags or anything that I should be aware of when hopefully purchasing it? Thanks guys!
