  1. I wonder if he'll be pooping foam fruitcake for a while...

    --Spiffy

    that was good.

my old roomate had that dog(well one just like it) It was next to impossible to train and demanded constiant attention or it would go on a shredding rampage. It was not stupid by any means it just needed alot of training. sadly he had no time for it due to newborn baby and had to turn it in to the pound.

my current Dog Gilby (yeah the sleepy guy in my avatar) has never given me any problem with chewing on stuff with the exception of one incident when he first came home. he is a rescued pit and is very greatfull to have a good home.

it all comes down to training and responsible owners.

as for the interior of the car well that too bad. your sister owes you big time.

  2. Ask the tirerack guys which tires on your short list have the rim-protector on them. It's just an extra thick piece of "meat" around the rim flange area. They actually do a lot to avoid most rim scrapes that happen in the parking lot. The ASX that I have (215/45R17) have a very small one, but my friend's Avons have a lot thicker sidewall. I think some Dunlop's (SP5000s in particular) have a really thick sidewall/rim protector band.

good point. the current tires have it too but due to the poor fit it pulls the "rim protector" in and lets the wife curb the wheels anyway.

tire rack recomends the 225s rather than the 215s I think the logic behind the 215s was if the car were to be lowered it would not rub. thats not an issue as we dont intened to lower it.

  3. Find out how wide the wheel is. It's stamped on there somewhere. Tire rack shows the range of wheel sizes for the ASX as being 7-8.5 with 7.5 as the optimum. So, I guess if you have 17x7.5s, go with 225. if they're 17x7, 215.

Generally, if the wheel is 7.5", you'd want a tread width of about 8.3 inches as wheel should be about 90% of the tread width. The ASX 215/45 tread is 8.4" wide, and the 225/45 is 8.7.

    ASX spec sheet

The tread width varies between different tires with the same section, so you should check it out on tirerack or something before making a choice.

Also I hear the ASXs are pretty good tires. I was going to buy some but just got a whole set of slightly used wheels and tires instead.

thanks Jamal, I have run the ASX tires on my 87 gl10 for a few years now and love them. they seem to be the best bang for the buck in my opinion. I did manage to cause an internal tire seperation once but that was due to flying thru a washout at 55 mph. my fault not the tires.

I have not had time to check what the rim width is as its the wifes car and she is always on the move. I can tell just by looking at the fit that the tires are too narrow though. looks like some crazy euro style B.S.

I think I will get some ordered as soon as i save up some "spare" cash.

  4. My wifes subaru has a set of 17" Rota wheels with 215/45 r/17 bridgestone potenza RE750 mounted. This is how we bought it.

The road noise is like a roar in this car on the crappy california roads. also the tires appear to be stretched to fit the width of the rim. This allows the rim to get curbed during my wifes parking manuvers.

I am looking at a set of Khumo asx 225/45R17 for the next set.

any one have similar problems or fixes?

  5. I think my fuel pump died on me last night in my RX. What are the part #'s for the fuel pump install kits you guys are talking about?

Also, where is the fuel pump located? I'm a noob still, please don't flame me! :D

well if you had read the thread fully you would not get flamed.;)

there is no install kit that I know of that will work properly. I had to piece mine together.(no I dont have part numbers beyond the pump itself)

you "Think" your pump died? maby you should go trouble shoot it first before you decide to start modifing things.

on a side note I changed one of those ford frame mounted pumps recently it is not a direct bolt on either. It would require some creative plumbing to make it work as well. Its only slightly cheaper than the Walbro but not as good quality.

  6. meeting with the forester crew would be cool....or

If you want roads down here to run I would sugest mount Hamilton as thats my home turf (and I happen to know the one cop that patrols it:burnout:)

we could run from highway 5 up and over. or from my side back.

just a thought for those of you who may want to go a bit faster on some twisties.

I dont care really its up to Brian as he started this thread and Is putting forth the most effort.

  7. So if you all will allow a slight hi jack here. I just finished installing some new stock 2wd struts on the front of my car and adjusted down the rear custom coil overs. well car looks great but rides rather poorly. way too soft in front and too stiff in rear. that said I will be on the hunt for XT6 5 lug swap parts soon. Mostly just to get a better selection of struts.

Now here is my question for those of you running the 5 lug. what struts did you use, why and did they perform like you want them too?

    Thanks guys,

  8. I had this very same question. Upon a little knowledge of my own v8 building I came up with this... CAM and INTAKE and heat that kills it like an rpm limiter. In a v8 that did same things (no high rpm power, like my subaru) I changed cam and kept factory intake (something I would love to do on an ea82). On old cam the top end of engine got hot, after beating on car. On new cam gaining several thousand hard thumping rpm, the top end got cooler and gained more air to have more power (all while staying cooler!----never to suicide flow again).

I could only think of making top end cool for ea82 to have a non-suicidal gain for higher rpm. drop thermostat, kill egr, open exhaust in strategic place (too much will kill limited fuel flow) all on oem intake.

I freakishly hit 6500 rpm spinning mud off the tires and it occurred to me the car was inbetween full temp and cold. Keeping intake cold is about all one could do. so , needless to say, I unintentionally found it to be heat (among all the usual pursuits for good running engine). Even fuel pump heating up is a killer, and on a car that is 30mpg design, it is easy to find these backed up heat makers (cool fuel cools the pump, etc etc).

I dont quite folow the logic. An EA82T being a turbo car has lots of heat to deal with for sure. Brian has an intercooler and a (hopefully) higher flow exhaust. His car should be able to wind out to red line with no problem. my wagon has its max power between 3500 and 7500 rpm with the mods it has. My RX is still rather untested as its not legally registered but short test runs have shown plenty of power above 4000 RPM. brians car would seem to have an actual problem not a design limitation.

  9. Fuel filter was replaced in September... car died in November and took a 6month break. So the filter should still be good.

I didnt think about the cat comming apart and clogging things up. I cant really disconnect it, my entire exhaust is 1 piece. I'd have to unbolt it from the turbo, but then it would hang and drag on the ground.

    -Brian

    sawsall

  10. Hello.

How do I go about creating a skid plate and finding a brush bar for my 91 loyale wagon. Its bone stock and I want to enhance its offroad capability. Dont want to tear of my oil pan and a brush bar just looks awsome.

Aslo, whats the diff between EA81 and EA82. Do I have one of these?

loyals are usually EA82 spfi motors

as for the brush guard and skid plate.

the EA82 cars (like yours) did have a simple skid plate stock. your car has none? then you need to look for one or fab up a real heavy duty one as the stock one is easily sdmashed on big rocks. Bumpers can be fabed by a good welder. I made my brush guard out of steel and its not much heavyer than the stock bumper.

  11. I vote for the first saturday in may. I dont care where. I can drive.

my wife will still be out of town so she wont care what im doing.

But as soon as I get my truck running I need to run out to New Mexico to pick up an RX and some parts that are being held for me by a very patient board member. that is my first priority. so in the unlikly event that the truck happens to run right before that weekend you will have to count me out.

    Russ

  12. Okay... so looks like i got all BUT the bay area folk attending.

How about it you guys? Buddy, NuclearBacon, Russ?

    -Brian

    yeah I lagged. sorry Brian.

probelm with us bay area guys is we have to work all the time to afford to live here and afford our sube habbits(and toyotas and vws and go carts and mountian bikes)you get the picture.

I will try to make it depending on the day you decide on. things are still looking good in early may.

  13. my wagon is now well over the 5000$ mark. I purchased it for 500$ go figure.

any one want to buy it now that I have dumped all my free time and cash into it?

if you dont buy It it will just end up with an RX transmission and more mods soon.

  14. sometimes I am just a cheap bastard and only change the conector (same as bosh fuel injector available at most parts stores) and clean the connections as that usually what the problem really is. listen to caleb for directions on how to find it.

removal of you intake pipe may help to acess it better.

I had an old thread on fixing this if you dig around for it.

  15. I was there. I talked to that guy for a while. He is an older guy Rallying with his daughter. They do allright with the little old sube. I have not been to any events since then but I assume he is still runnig it.

He told me he had custom Rally suspension made for it.:slobber: I want some too!

  16. a justy motor might be a small enough power plant to pull it off. sounds like fun.

I deal with hydraulics at work. It seems complicated but its not all that hard to work with. If you can grasp electrical you will do great with hydraulic.

personally I would use a small Yanmar Diesel out of a little John deer mower. they already have pumps ect usually.

variable displacement pumps are the most eficient but also are the most veunerable to contamination in the hyd. system. just somthing to consider.

  17. ALL RIGHT MAYBE YOU GUYS DON'T WANT TO COME TO MY HOUSE OR WHATEVER...BESIDES IT'S SUPPOSED TO RAIN ON SUNDAY...YOU GUYS PLAN SOMETHING AND I'LL SEE IF I CAN SHOW UP...IT'S KIND OF FRUSTRATING THAT YOU GUYS WANT EVERYTHING AND ARE NOT WILLING TO PUT FORTH A LITTLE EFFORT:mad:

relax I would have come (I love to BBQ) but its a little bit out of the way for me.:-\
