  1. Does the justy have the same suspension and 4wd setup as other subarus?
  2. I have a small 6" ridged pipe wrench that works wonderfull on things like that and bites in 100 times better than vice grips and doesn't slip and round off the nut like vice grips. It will remove the nut or break the stud off, especially if you put a cheater handle on it.
  3. Acetone eats the heck out of plastic so becareful. Acetone is used to remove that 2 or 3 part plastic gas tank liner as well, so you can reline it on cars that had leaky gas tanks. I just did that on an MG that I have, so I am certainly not going to put any in that. Of couse, a few onces will be so diluted that it will probably be ok, but then does it really do anything. I guess it doesn't matter as long a you think it does and get better milage. Like a buddy of mine driving around with his tailgate down, I know he has slowed down but thinks its the tailgate.
  4. Mike, I sent you another PM. Thanks, Kim Webb.
  5. I might look that over myself , I have a weber conversion on an mg midget that has been running rich here in the smokeys of NC.
  6. ok then, nothing but an ea81 gasket will wrk then . Thanks for the info . Regards Kim Webb.
  7. I am going for another crank. Finding someone who knows what they are doing with soobie cranks around here seems to be hard to find.
  8. Also look at all vacuum hoses, might have pulled something loose.
  9. Is there a difference between the 1.8 and 1.6 headgaskets? I see that the bores are the same.
  10. Are ea81 and e82 connecting rods the same?
  11. I'm thinking of going back with the ea82 engine out of the wagon for 250 bucks. What I hate about this is its my dads car and he doesn't really have the money for trial and error. Right now I have two engines torn completely apart in my garage and nothing to work with. Who makes the best head gaskets for the EA82 turbo?
  12. I mean that particular issue seems to plague subies and I would like to know everyones tips tricks and failures. Remember when filling the radiator with coolant to throw a cap full over your shoulder as tribute to the head gasket spirits I would imagine this would be a good discussion topic. Some say use only subaru gaskets, but others have had good luck with other brands. Some say use a 3 piece steel gasket. My car originally had the ea82 turbo, but blew 3 headgaskets on the turbo side and the motor had a crank problem. so I rebuilt an ea81 and that lasted 3k miles and the crank went because I didn't install a new oil pump. Now do I rebuild the ea81 again or buy another ea82turbo that I found with a blown headgsket and try putting it back original again?
  13. Found an 86 wagon with ea82 turbo that has a blown head gasket. That is what I started out with in my 89 rx. I put the ea81 in because the turbo kept blowing head gaskets. whew. This one supposedly has a new crank and rods and oil pump
  14. You are correct, I had to pull the heads,or at least the left one to get at the bolt that was the last holdout. It was as I had feared, the oil pump had been failing for a while and all the bearings looked rough, but the bearing for the rear rod had spun and the rod is a gonner. I don't know weather the crank could be turned down and saved or not. I checked with my calipers and that journal is within .007 of the other rod journals. Does anyone know of anyone who sells subaru crank kits?
  15. I have the dished low compression pistons. I have everything for ab ea82 turbo but the block and crank which were both damaged. I converted to an ea81 out of an old wagon and put a re ring kit in it and it did well, but I should have replaced the oil pump as it failed. I need a crank for an ea81.
  16. Oh,well its on ebay and it says it has head gasket problems. I have a good set of ea82 turbo heads, will they fit a regular ea82?
  17. I am looking for another engine and I am wondering if it has the ea81 or ea82.
  18. Are there bolts in the coolant passages? I am almost to that point. I hate to pull those heads if I don't have to. I must get it apart and confirm what I think. I need a decent crank for it I'm sure, I have some ea82 parts to swap if someone is interested, turbo heads and the turbo. I hate going to the junkyard.
  19. Hello, I have not been on this board for quite a while. I had a 1989 Subaru RX that the motor was ruined in and I took the EA81 engine out of an old 82 wagon that I had and rebuilt it and put it in the RX and it has done fine until now. Last week while my dad was driving it, it started hammering and lost power and he had to get towed home. I'm pretty sure it is a connecting rod and expect the crankshaft is a gonner. I pulled the egine today and started tearing it down. I have two questions. 1 what would cause this, I suspect the oil pump died or something. Even when I started it with it knocking, it had oil pressure until it got hot. 2 is it possible to split the crankcase without removing the heads. the heads and pistons are fine, I just need to remove the crank and rods.
  20. Will do, I definitely want the center eye on the brat if possible. That light really lights up the road right in front of the car in bad weather.
  21. no pictures yet. Its up on a mountain and i got to borrow a trailer to haul it home. Then i have to get the title stuff all worked out. It belonged to a guy who died and his son has to get his mom to do something to get me the title. Something about death certificates and creepy stuff like that. Funny thing about it is that its a metalic blue paint and looks almost perfectly new and shiny almost almost all the way down to the bottom of the doors and rotted rockers. Hey do those glass tops come out or do the just pop up?
  22. So could I change out the grills and make the brat have the center lamp? That would be cool. Is rust a big problem in Australia? I see your from Brissy.
  23. You might could mostly disable it by disconnecting the linkage for the waste gate and wiring it open so there is little boost. If that hose that senses the boost pressure comes of by accident, it could cause the headgasket to blow like in the car I got from my nephew. No pressure was being sent to the waste gate valve and it never opened. The higher the rpm the more boost, more boost more rpms, etc. He said it was fun while it lasted. I now have a rebuilt Ea81 in that car because the engine had crank problems as well.
  24. A friend of mine has offered to give me a fixer upper brat for a long time. Well, it finally looks like it might happen. It all looks about the same as my old 82 wagon. It has both rocker panels rusted out. I need to weld some new ones in when I get it. Just what I needed, another car project. I don't remember what year Brat he said it was but it has t-tops(or whatever they are called) and it doesn't have the center lamp like my wagon, but it has 4 headlights. Is there much difference between Brats and wagons? It looks like the same Ea81 like my wagon had, same 4 speed(wish it was a 5) and all.
