Bought another subie
cookie replied to Legacy777's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI drove a new OBS recently and it was streets ahead of my 99 Forester. The OBS is one of my all time favorites but the Forester has the size I need. Yesterday I had a step ladder and a folding big ladder in the Forester with drop cloths and a bunch of painting stuff. No OBS for me while I use it for this stuff. Envy envy, add lots of sound deadening while apart.

A dent/hole about the size of a penny
cookie replied to danz75's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAround here it is between $600 and $800 per panel so that's not too far off. I have a guy who does touh up for dealers on new cars who does small repairs for me. These are quite a bit cheaper but the hole in the panel would move it out of his catagory as he does not carry a welder in his van. He did a deep dent in the back bumper or my BMW for $200 but the blending he does is an art.

A dent/hole about the size of a penny
cookie replied to danz75's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXand on the other hand, a good body person and two seconds with a wire welder and the hole is gone. Grind and season with bondo, spray undercoating beneath the damage and paint. Over here doors are often reskinned also. Just have it fixed by a bodyshop with a good guarantee.

Gas Gauge Fluctuates A LOT
cookie replied to kimokalihi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTechron will remove a bit of corrosion. If you have an older car with a lot of corrosion it may be too much for anything but sandpaper. Some of these older cars did not recieve much care from the first owners. my car got gas, tires, and the occasional oil change from the folks who bought it new.

Gas Gauge Fluctuates A LOT
cookie replied to kimokalihi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI remember when we were lucky to get about 60,000 miles out of a generator so it's great. The first alternators boosted that to 100,000 but these are really good electronics. Makes me think I'll look at changing mine next year but right now my rear wheel bearings are just starting to sound a bit loose and you know how Foresters are famous for that.

Speedometer has never been right on 99OBW
cookie replied to Shep2112's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNot on modern cars as far as I know. we used to able to calibrate speedos fairly easily with adapters but the ony folks who did it were cops, taxis, and hot rodders. Put a piece of colored tape at each critical mark, a little v will do. 25, 35, 55, 65, etc. I just drive a bit faster than the speedo indicates since a CHP officer told me he only hits folks 10 over because there are so many of them here.

Need Advice on 01 Legacy Head Gasket
cookie replied to RedRum's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think that's a pretty good deal too. I have not heard of any real late models leaking myself but it will happen in Canada first as the cold seem to do it. I'm not use I'd add goop to one of those until I heard of some leaking.

I'm home...
cookie replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe VW vans blew so many engines that intrepid travelers with old engines were well advised to bring a spare. They were easy to change and you got some practice.

I'm home...
cookie replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXReminds me of a guy with a VW van that started cross country with one engine in the rear and slept beside the other. When he got to CA he only had one engine left.

Need Advice on 01 Legacy Head Gasket
cookie replied to RedRum's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit's kind of hard to say. I bet it did weep a bit, mine did. They did not have the additive at the time my car weeped so I had new head gaskets fitted. then when the additive came out i used that too. to Subaru's credit they stepped up to the plate for the ehad gaskets and I bout the car used and out of warranty. I feel better with the post 03 gaskets, but if it happened again I'd try the sealer first.

cookie replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit should do for a while, at least enough for an oil change on the new baby. Be sure to give it baby oil....

Oil Light Mystery in a 97 legacy obw
cookie replied to Mike G.'s topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA friend just had his oil pump check valve go and do the high speed thing. Engine seems to have been saved though. Just running a lighter oil can cause flicker at idle and I have heard of weird light stuff on Subies when the alternator goes too.

Oil Light Mystery in a 97 legacy obw
cookie replied to Mike G.'s topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou need to put a manual oil pressure guage on it to test what is really happening. You could have blown an oil pump o ring or have something as simple as a bad sender or short. If it were mine I'd be on the way to the auto parts store now.

Clutch shudder problems...
cookie replied to MaximusGradient's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI followed the TSB and replaced the slave and hoses. I still did not have enough pressure and replaced the master. Fine now for a coule of year. As far as your shudder goes the linkage is unlikly to affect it and it may not go away.

Putting '96 Legacy L seats in a 2k Forester
cookie replied to sailhard's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would investigate if either car has seat weight sensors. My 99 Forester does not I believe. Sometimes the tricky thing about seat swaps these days is wiring.

Oil level: overfill?
cookie replied to Forester Gump's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGary, Have you seen an actual Fumoto leak or one of the other brands? At CF we used them on cross country tucks and forklifts and I've never seen one leak. Don't ask about the time we tried another brand. Sometimes there is a reason there is a lower bidder. You can also buy a fair bit of oil for the cost of a Fumoto. I've also never seen one open in error becuse of the lock, but you can double lock them with a hose clamp for farm use. That sort of ruins it to me because if you have to go get a screwdriver you may as well get a wrench. I probably would not use one for off road as you can break off anything that sticks out at all.

Oil level: overfill?
cookie replied to Forester Gump's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you put in 4.2 quarts you are fine. If it is a bit overfull it will toss it into your pcv valve and you may smoke a bit. It takes a serious overfill to foam but some people have been known to overfill two quarts.

A few more 1.8L questions?
cookie replied to SSC's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's not bad oil consumption for that age. IMHO it would be a waste of time to hop up that tiny engine. Wear it out and install a 2.2 after and you will think it's a rocket for a while.

Vacuum oil extractor - opinion?

Vacuum oil extractor - opinion?
cookie replied to Green96GT's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually it takes one cup of coffee. I drive the car up on the ramps and put a jug under and run the tube to the Fumoto. While it drains I go in and make a cup of coffee. When I get back the jug is full and I put the coffee on the fender well and shut the Fumoto valve, pull off the tube, and while I'm under change the filter. Then the coffee is cool enought for the first sip before you start to pour in the 4.2 quarts of oil. I have another full sip and drive the car off the ramps and let it idle while I pick up the tools and put the oil in back to recyle. Finish the coffee and off to the recycle place and I'm done.
