  1. not seeing the car it is tough to tell, but when battery voltage is down the first thing that quits is turn signals.
  2. If you have more time than money check for a used one. My former AWD Jeep had this problem and since we have a giant flea market in San Jose I was able to find a pretty good match for wear. A lot of tires shops have used tires and Craigslist has tires sometimes.
  3. I was considering another set of michies, probably the Hydoedge. I decided to go off brand and try Big O since I have a friend who owns a Big O shop. The Big O Aspens I selected were fairly cheap at $68 a tire and look sort of like a Michellin copy. They are quieter than the old Michies were and so far do everything as well. Another 65,000 miles will tell if they are still hanging in there like the Michellins did.
  4. not to metion that it can seal up and only leak when it gets quite hot. It can also be so slight that it passes sniffer tests. A miserable job for a mechanic to find.
  5. I've only bumped that one once and it was easy enough to find since I knew where I'd cleaned. The one that has gotten me a few times is my Forester fog light switch. If I bump it with my knee I think I drive around like the senile old guy I am for a month or so with the fogs on.
  6. Run by the door inflation. The marking on the tire is only max as required by law. The door inflation has been adjusted for car weight and characteristics during a controlled test period and odds are its a lot closer than you will work out yourself. The struts that came off my Forester from the factory said KYB on them and the GR2s are just a bit stiffer, I've heard 15% and can beleive it.
  7. Boats have the same problem. next time get a boat deep cycle battery, lose the alarm, remote starter as suggested, and best of luck.
  8. actually oil does help piston slap. I have been experimenting for a while with oils and have seen quite a difference. I have used Pennsoil 10-30, Mobil 1 10-30, Mobil 1, 15-50, and now Havoline 5-30. oil tests are good with all of the above and the Havoline is the quietest, next is the 15-50 Mobil 1. I have no idea why the Havoline was quieter and it was not my idea, some of the guys on Bobistheoilguy reported good results with it. I like extended OCIs myself, but for the quiet I'll change more often with the Havoline. Next time I might try the Delvac for chuckles. It was always good in my diesels.
  9. 03 was supposed to be the year they improved the new gasket. I hope that is true since I specified the new post 03 on my 99 Forester. The good part is that was a few years and about 40,000 miles back now with no furthur issues.
  10. I'm not sure that is all that bad for a 4 wheel drive heavy car in the city. My Forester does 24-25 mixed with a fair bit of freeway.
  11. Do they use imperial gallons in Arizona? I have gotten the occasionally unusual milesage in my car but it was often due to some minor thing like a different pump that shut off early. When I ran a few tankfuls and checked I was pretty much back to normal.
  12. I suspect as long as they keep the skirts that short that some folks will get slap. I have heard the new pistons just have a different coating and all you have to do is have a condition that removes the coating.
  13. Results may vary. While this may sound too good to be true there might be a few factors that are giving you a bit better than normal readings. Perhaps the gas pump shut off a bit early or conditions were absolutely perfect. Could have had a great tailwind. Try it over a period of time and see what happens.
  14. I am cursed with slap in my 99. I changed oil four times to help and am currently running Havoline which does make a difference. Take the new pistons, I'd love it if someone offerend me some.
  15. I think setright is in europe. The oil offered there is a bit different. Look up specialy formulations on the web and see if you can't find something you like.
  16. It has been reported here that HC tests don't always turn up a Subaru headgasket problem. When they just start to go bad the engine seals up when cold and the HC tests show nothing.
  17. only place I know you can get it is the dealer. I don't know the price because they just gave it to me. There are a few dealers who are on line here. Try Jamie Thomas.
  18. I just put on a set of Big O Aspens. The only thing I can say about them so far is they were fairly cheap, $68, and they are quieter than the Michellins I had before. I hesitate to put on a set of $100 dollar tires on a car with 132,000 miles.
  19. Folks have talked about some of the 2.2s having slightly sticking valves as well. Some MMoil might help that if that's the case.
  20. nip, mine was just beyond that mileage. My pilot bearing had no seal and the grease washed out if I recall correctly.
  21. You too frag. By the way it is common on some engines that when they wear more air gets by the throttle body. most throttles leak a little, but not so much the IAC can't compensate. Sometimes they have bushings that wear out and make the mixture hard to control. Not sure about your model, I'm sure somebody here will tell us if that's an issue. I sure have heard of lots of folks sying thier Subie had carboned up (much more than other modern cars I know of) and I reckon it can't hurt to decarbonize. I have also heard of lots of folks having idle problems from cracked lines or IACs that need cleaning. The only problem I've had lately with the Forester is noise in the rear I thought might be a tire but maybe a bearing. I had it put on a lift and it is a tiny tire seperation so I got lucky. Good luck on your trip mate!
  22. just don't let the water freeze Frag. Today I had to clean my windshield twice here in San Mateo because the water froze as soon as I sprayed it on. I imagine it's a bit cooler where you are. Good thing you have Labatts antifreeze.
